
In praise of empathy, a lamentably rare commodity
One Saturday evening in March 1988, in my office at the Northern Ireland newspaper that I edited at the time, I was sitting with my news editor watching the TV news.
It was at the height of a 30-year period in Irish history euphemistically known as 'the Troubles,' which had begun in the late 1960s with civil rights marches in protest at systemic discrimination against the minority Catholic and nationalist population by the Protestant and unionist majority and the local government. It later morphed into a full-blown civil war that pitched the militant Irish Republican Army and various offshoots against the (mostly unionist) police, loyalist paramilitaries and the British army.
That day, March 19, had been an eventful one and we were not short of content for the following day's edition. At the funeral of an IRA fighter in West Belfast, attended by thousands of sympathetic mourners, two off-duty British army corporals in civilian clothes had been identified as such when, apparently unaware that the funeral was taking place, they drove by accident almost head-on into the procession. Their unmasking in a staunchly republican area was in itself a death sentence — but even by Northern Ireland standards, the manner of their deaths was horrific.
The two soldiers were dragged from their car and taken to a nearby sports field, where they were stripped to their underwear and questioned, tortured, stabbed numerous times, their bodies beaten to a pulp, and eventually they were shot dead. The entire incident was filmed from army and news helicopters, and the footage has been described as the most harrowing of the entire conflict.

Back in my office, the news editor, Tony, and I watched an interview with a politician from Sinn Fein, then the political wing of the IRA, in which — as was the futile custom — he was invited to condemn the murders despite almost certainly supporting them. Tony, a newspaper veteran, told me: 'Just listen: the first words out of his mouth will be 'Well, yes, but what about…'' So, I listened. The first words out of the politician's mouth were: 'Well, yes, but what about…' followed by a lengthy and well-rehearsed litany of atrocities committed against his constituents by the forces of the state and their paramilitary allies.
Tony explained: 'It's called 'whataboutery.' I first encountered it in Dublin about 10 years ago.' He did indeed: the word itself is thought to have been coined by The Irish Times in 1974, although the practice it describes is commonplace anywhere there is armed conflict.
Attempting to deflect criticism by pointing to wrongdoing by someone else rather than addressing the original issue is a temptation that can be difficult to resist. I have been guilty of it myself, most recently when an Iranian missile attack on a hospital in the Israeli city of Beersheba provoked outrage from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz.
My first response was: 'Outrage? Seriously? Where was this outrage when the armed forces this man directs rained death and destruction on 34 of Gaza's 36 hospitals, killing patients and medical staff indiscriminately, leaving at least 15 of those hospitals crippled and the rest shut down, unable to provide desperately needed healthcare of any kind?' But that would be whataboutery. It should go without saying that any attack on any hospital is just plain wrong, regardless of who are the attackers and who are the victims.
What is much more useful than whataboutery is its opposite: an ability to place yourself in the shoes of your adversary in an attempt to understand why they think and behave as they do. If there were a single word to sum that up, it might be 'empathy.' It sounds easy, but it isn't and, in this part of the world, it is in lamentably short supply.

For example, in Israel there is no evidence of an understanding that denigrating Iran as a theocracy under the malign influence of a gang of religious fundamentalists is a bit rich given the composition of the current Israeli government. Or that Benjamin Netanyahu's interminable whingeing, without evidence, about Tehran being 'weeks away' from a nuclear weapon — a phrase he first used in 2015, having voiced similar sentiments for at least a decade before that — risks making him the boy who cried wolf. Or that Iran is a proud nation with a rich cultural heritage, one of the world's oldest uninterrupted civilizations dating back more than 6,000 years, and it does not take kindly to being bullied — ask Saddam Hussein.
Equally, in Iran there is no evidence of an understanding that chanting 'death to Israel' and threatening to wipe a UN member state off the map, while simultaneously enriching uranium to a level of purity — 60 percent — for which there is no known civilian use, are mutually exclusive actions. No sane adversary would permit both.
So, you will look in vain for much empathy in the Middle East, but perhaps there is cause for optimism from an unlikely source. Consider the following two statements: 1. 'The repeated refusal by Palestinian groups to accept the existence of Israel is a major obstacle to peace. There cannot be a negotiation when one side refuses to accept the other's existence, and Israel cannot make peace with Palestine's corrupt and chaotic leadership' 2. 'Israel has to be accountable for its actions. Until then, there will be no peace, just a surrender, and the people of Palestine will never accept surrender disguised as diplomacy. And Israel's illegal settlements mean it is not an honest negotiating partner.' They sound like two sides in a debate, which is what they are. What made this debate unique was that both statements were made by the same person.
The event, in a British grammar school, was organized by Parallel Histories, an educational charity that helps teenage students navigate complex and divisive issues, learning in the process that conflict can be more complicated than good-vs.-evil narratives may suggest. The format is that teams of young debaters argue one point of view and then, after a short break, they switch sides. The charity says: 'In the process, stereotypes are disrupted and preconceptions challenged. Students learn how to question historical assertions and identify the difference between proportionate and disproportionate claims.'
In other words, although they may not be aware of it, they are learning empathy. Now, couldn't we do with some of that in the Middle East?

Villagers offer harrowing accounts of one of the deadliest attacks in Sudan's civil war
CAIRO: When Ahlam Saeed awoke last month to the sound of gunfire and roaring vehicle motors, the 43-year-old widow rushed outside her home in war-torn Sudan to find a line of at least two dozen vehicles, many of them motorcycles carrying armed fighters.'They were firing at everything and in every direction,' the mother of four said. 'In an instant, all of us in the village were fleeing for safety.' Many people were gunned down in their houses or while trying to flee. At least 200 people were killed, including many women and children, in the community of straw homes, according to a rights group tracking Sudan's civil and her children — ages 9 to 15 — were among those who survived after rebel fighters rampaged through Shag Al-Num, the small farming village of several thousand people in Sudan's Kordofan region. In interviews with The Associated Press, Saeed and four other villagers described the July 12 attack, one of the deadliest assaults since the war began more than two years ago over a power struggle between commanders of the military and the rival paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces, or villagers' accounts add to the devastating toll of the conflict, which started in April 2023 and has wrecked the country in northeastern African. The fighting has killed more than 40,000 people, displaced as many as 14 million, caused disease outbreaks and pushed many places to the brink of including mass killings of civilians and mass rape, have also been reported, particularly in Darfur, triggering an investigation by the International Criminal Court into potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.'Hell's door was opened'The villagers from Shag Al-Num said RSF fighters and their allied Janjaweed militias stormed into the community, looting houses and robbing residents, especially of women's gold. Some victims were held at young villagers attempted to fight back by taking up rifles to defend their homes. The RSF fighters knocked them down and continued their rampage, witnesses said.'It was as if the hell's door was opened,' Saeed said, sobbing. Her straw house and neighboring homes were burned down, and one RSF fighter seized her necklace. 'We were dying of fear,' she villagers said the fighters also sexually abused or raped many women. One of the women said she saw three fighters wearing RSF uniforms dragging a young woman into an abandoned house. When they reached Garni, a village on a crucial supply route just northwest of the city, RSF fighters ambushed the area, residents said.'They tell you to leave, then they kill you,' said Al-Amin Ammar, a 63-year-old who said he escaped because he is old. Kneecap rapper due in court over terror charges for Hezbollah support
A member of Irish rap band Kneecap was due to appear in court on Wednesday charged with a terror offence for allegedly supporting Hezbollah. Liam O'Hanna, 27, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was charged in May after being accused of displaying a Hezbollah flag during a London concert in November. The hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London is expected to hear legal arguments on whether the charge falls outside a six-month time limit, a court official confirmed. Since Hezbollah was banned in the UK in 2019, it has been an offence to show support for the Iran-backed Lebanese force. Kneecap has grabbed headlines for statements denouncing the war in Gaza and against Israel. The hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London comes amid a growing controversy surrounding support for banned organizations. More than 700 people have been arrested, mostly at demonstrations, since the Palestine Action group was also outlawed in early July under the Terrorism Act 2000. The government ban on Palestine Action came into force days after it took responsibility for a break-in at an air force base in southern England that caused an estimated £7.0 million ($9.3 million) of damage to two aircraft. The group said its activists were responding to Britain's indirect military support for Israel during the war in Gaza. Provocative Hundreds of fans cheered outside the central London court in June when O'Hanna, Liam Og O hAnnaidh in Gaelic, made his first appearance in June. Prosecutor Michael Bisgrove told the previous hearing the case was 'not about Mr O'Hanna's support for the people of Palestine or his criticism of Israel'. 'He is well within his rights to voice his opinions and his solidarity,' Bisgrove said. Instead, the prosecutor said, the case was about O'Hanna wearing and displaying 'the flag of Hezbollah, a proscribed terrorist organization, while allegedly saying 'Up Hamas, up Hezbollah''. The raucous punk-rap group has said the video that led to the charge was taken out of context. Daring provocateurs to their fans, dangerous extremists to their detractors, the group's members rap in the Irish language as well as English. Formed in 2017, the group is no stranger to controversy. Their lyrics are filled with references to drugs, they have repeatedly clashed with the UK's previous Conservative government and have vocally opposed British rule in Northern Ireland. Last year, the group was catapulted to international fame by a semi-fictional film based on them that scooped multiple awards including at the Sundance festival.

Protest-hit UK town wins bid to empty asylum-seeker hotel
LONDON: A UK judge on Tuesday blocked asylum seekers from being housed at a hotel in a town which has witnessed violent protests, dealing a blow to the government. The high court judge approved a request by the local authority in Epping, northeast of London, for a temporary injunction to stop migrants from being housed at the Bell Hotel. The ruling, which came after the interior ministry was unsuccessful in trying to dismiss the case, raises questions about the government's ability to provide accommodation for asylum seekers and refugees. It also comes as Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces serious political heat from the hard-right Reform UK party for failing to stop irregular migrants crossing the Channel to England on small boats. Protests broke out in Epping in July after an asylum seeker was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, which he denies. Since then hundreds of people have taken part in protests and counter-protests outside the Bell Hotel. Further anti-immigration demonstrations also spread to London and around England. The council argued that putting the migrants in the Bell Hotel presented a 'clear risk of further escalating community tensions.' It sought an injunction that would mean the hotel's owners, Somani Hotels Limited, must remove asylum seekers from the property within 14 days. Judge Stephen Eyre granted the interim order, but gave the owners until September 12 to stop housing the migrants. He issued his judgment after lawyers for the Home Office claimed that approving the request would 'substantially impact' its ability to provide accommodation for asylum seekers across the UK. Police say there have been at least six protests in Epping since July 17, with officers and vehicles attacked during some of the demonstrations. Several men appeared in court on Monday charged with violent disorder over the protests. Starmer has vowed to slash the number of migrants and asylum seekers in Britain, as well as reduce legal migration, to stave off pressure from the far-right Reform party, led by Brexit-leader Nigel Farage and riding high in polls. More than 50,000 people have made the dangerous crossing from northern France in rudimentary vessels since Starmer became UK leader last July. Labour has pledged to end the use of hotels for asylum seekers before the next election, likely in 2029, in a bid to save billions of pounds.
