Guardiola and Xavi applications a hoax, says Indian football
Subrata Paul, national team director of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), said earlier this week that Xavi had applied to the vacant job.
But the AIFF this weekend said the approaches were not 'genuine'.
'The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine,' the AIFF said in a statement.
Manchester City manager Guardiola's application was never reported earlier.
The Indian men's team are without a coach since Spaniard Manolo Marquez stepped down earlier this month as head coach after just one year and one win in eight games.
The AIFF advertised the vacancy, and later said it received 170 applications.
India's men are 133rd in the FIFA rankings -- their lowest placing in nearly a decade -- and have won just one of their last 16 matches - AFP

IPOH: The son of Perak Ruler Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah was among the participants of a recent swimming competition at Teluk Senangin in Lumut where several students were stung by jellyfish. Event organiser AMMJB Swimmers Event & Clinics posted on Facebook that Raja Kecil Besar Raja Azlan Muzzaffar Shah, who participated in the 3km men's junior 12-19 age group category, only suffered minor injuries and is in good condition. Meanwhile, Perak human resources, health, indian community affairs and national integration committee chairman A. Sivanesan said the competition was organised without referring to local authorities. He said the organiser should have at least consulted the Malaysian Maritime Department to check if there was a threat of jellyfish in the area. "The organiser is a private company from outside Perak. We did not know about the event... even the sports and health executive committees did not know about it. "This is a lesson to outsiders who want to organise any activities… that they must refer to the authorities. Luckily, there were no untoward incidents this time," he said at an event in the Royal Club Ipoh here on Sunday. It was reported that at least 40 participants of the Teluk Senangin Open Water Swim 2025 competition were injured after being stung by jellyfish and needed hospital treatment. Siraj strikes after Jaiswal helps India set England daunting target
LONDON: Yashasvi Jaiswal made a sparkling hundred and Washington Sundar a blistering fifty before Mohammed Siraj struck with the last ball of Saturday's play to bolster India's hopes of a series-levelling win in the fifth and deciding Test against England at the Oval. India were dismissed for 396 in their second innings on the third day as they set England a target of 374 to win with just over two days' play remaining. Siraj, ever-present in all five matches of a gruelling series, then yorked Zak Crawley for 14 with just two balls left in the day's play to spark joyous celebrations among the tourists. England were 50-1 at stumps, still requiring a further 324 runs to win, with Ben Duckett 34 not out. No side have made more to win in the fourth innings of a Test at the Oval than England's 263 in a one-wicket victory over Australia back in 1902. However, the most England have made to win any Test in the fourth innings was their 378 against India at Edgbaston in 2022, while they also chased down 371 at Headingley in the opening match of this series. Earlier, Jaiswal was out for 118, his second hundred of the series after the talented left-hander's ton at Headingley. The 23-year-old opener received superb support from Akash Deep in a third-wicket partnership of 107, the paceman belying his status as a nightwatchman with an accomplished 66 -- his maiden Test fifty. Ravindra Jadeja and Sundar, both fresh from hundreds in Manchester, each made 53, with Sundar launching a brutal assault after a depleted England took the new ball. Justin powers into Macau Open final after gritty win
PETALING JAYA: Men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh battled his way into the Macau Open final after a hard-fought 19-21, 21-16, 21-16 win against India's Tharun Manepalli on Saturday (Aug 2). He will now face either Indonesia's Alwi Farhan or India's Lakshya Sen in the title match on Sunday (Aug 2). Playing at the Macau East Asian Games Dome, Justin carried high hopes of reaching his first final of the year after a string of inconsistent performances in previous tournaments and he finally did it. Justin, ranked 45th in the world and just two spots above Tharun, did not have it easy though as the Indian played aggressively to take the opening game. However, the Malaysian regrouped in the second game to force a decider, and after a gruelling 81-minute battle, Justin emerged victorious with a 19-21, 21-16, 21-16 win.
