SHIZUOKA (Kyodo) -- Shunsaku Tamiya, chairman of Japanese plastic model kit maker Tamiya Inc., known for its radio-controlled cars and Mini 4WD models, has died, the company said Tuesday. He was 90.
Tamiya, who died Friday of undisclosed causes, was credited with raising the global profile of the Shizuoka-based toy maker. While the funeral was held privately by close relatives, the company plans to hold a memorial event.
The Shizuoka native long served as the company's president, helping raise his hometown's standing in the plastic model industry through trade and hobby shows, according to the maker.
After graduating from Waseda University in Tokyo in 1958, he joined Tamiya Shoji & Co., which was then operated by his father, Yoshio.
Tamiya became president of the company in 1984 and was named chairman in 2008.

SBI Shinsei Bank Completes Repayment of Public Funds

News from Japan Jul 31, 2025 16:46 (JST) Tokyo, July 31 (Jiji Press)--Japan's SBI Shinsei Bank said Thursday that it has repaid all remaining public funds worth 230 billion yen to the government. For the repayment, its parent, SBI Holdings Inc., purchased SBI Shinsei preferred shares held by government-affiliated Deposit Insurance Corp. of Japan and Resolution and Collection Corp. Following the completion of repayment of public funds, SBI Shinsei is expected to be listed on a stock exchange again within this year. Among the Japanese banks that received public funds for recapitalization during the financial crisis in the late 1990s to the early 2000s, SBI Shinsei was the last to repay the taxpayer money. SBI Shinsei, formerly Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan, which went bust in 1998, became a subsidiary of SBI Holdings, a major online financial service group, in 2021 through a tender offer as it was unable to fully pay back public funds given to deal with its massive nonperforming loans reflecting the collapse of the country's speculation-driven bubble economy. The bank was delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange in September 2023. [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.] Jiji Press

Osaka Expo Angola Pavilion Subcontractors Sue for Overdue Bills

News from Japan Society Jul 31, 2025 16:27 (JST) Osaka, July 31 (Jiji Press)--Two subcontractors engaged in the construction of Angola's pavilion at the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka, western Japan, filed a lawsuit Thursday demanding payment of outstanding construction costs. In the suit filed with Osaka District Court, the subcontractors request the defendants, including a former accountant at an Osaka-based construction company, which commissioned the work to the subcontractors, to pay 58 million yen in overdue bills. According to their petition, the subcontractors took on interior furnishing and air conditioning system work for the pavilion around February but have only received part of the fees even after finishing the work. The construction company told them that it had fallen into negative net worth as the former accountant sent a total of 122 million yen to a company owned by the accountant without permission between November 2024 and May this year. 'We waited for payments for several months but there was no sincere response,' an official representing one of the subcontractors told a news conference after filing the suit, expressing a wish to receive the money so that the official's company can make outstanding payments owed to partners. BOJ Keeps Policy Unchanged, Raises Inflation Outlooks

Tokyo, July 31 (Jiji Press)—The Bank of Japan decided to keep its monetary policy unchanged Thursday while raising its inflation outlooks. Members of the BOJ's Policy Board at its two-day meeting from Wednesday unanimously voted to maintain the policy of guiding the unsecured overnight call rate, Japan's benchmark short-term interbank lending rate, to around 0.5 pct. The BOJ apparently determined that it is advisable to continue monitoring economic and price trends for some time, with many in the central bank believing that uncertainty remains over the course of the global economy although tariff negotiations between Japan and the United States were concluded. In its new quarterly Outlook for Economic Activity and Prices report, adopted at the meeting, the Japanese central bank raised its projection for the country's core consumer price index growth for fiscal 2025 to 2.7 pct from 2.2 pct shown in the previous report released in early May. The hike reflects rising prices of rice and other food items. The CPI growth projection for fiscal 2026 was raised to 1.8 pct from 1.7 pct, and that for fiscal 2027 to 2.0 pct from 1.9 pct. The BOJ maintained the view that underlying CPI inflation is 'likely to be at a level that is generally consistent with' the bank's price stability target of 2 pct in the second half of the current projection period through fiscal 2027. The BOJ raised its forecast for the country's real gross domestic product growth for fiscal 2025 to 0.6 pct from 0.5 pct while leaving that for fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027 unchanged at 0.7 pct and 1.0 pct, respectively. Japan's economy has recovered moderately although some weakness has been seen in part, the bank said in the report. At the same time, BOJ cautioned that it 'remains highly uncertain' how trade and other policies of other countries will evolve and how economic activity and prices will react to them.
