Workshop for MEPMA officials to identify SHG businesses held at Tadepalli

The Hindu15-07-2025
MEPMA (Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas) on Tuesday conducted a workshop on 'Livelihoods and Entrepreneurship Acceleration Programme' (LEAP), a key initiative under MEPMA to achieve the goals set by the State government with regard to One Family-One Entrepreneur (OFOE) programme.
According to a press note from the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department (MA&UD), LEAP is aimed at strengthening urban business ecosystems by identifying, guiding, and scaling SHG-led enterprises. In alignment with the State government's OFOE programme, the LEAP project is being implemented in collaboration with the India SME Forum.
In this context, the workshop held at Tadepalli provided direction to MEPMA staff on how to enable entrepreneurship within families. MA&UD principal secretary S. Suresh Kumar and MEPMA mission director N. Tej Bharat were present on the occasion.
The workshop focused on capacity building for city mission managers, identifying SHG businesses, exploring market access strategies and digital formalisation techniques, and also training staff to become mentors and counsellors.
The officials also discussed subjects, including cluster development, promotion of women SHG clusters, and digital tools like dashboards, feedback systems, and performance tracking. MEPMA is aiming to nurture 30,000 entrepreneurs during 2025–26, and staff were briefed on the roadmap to achieve the goal.
According to a press note, an action plan is already under way for implementation of the project. Phase-1 audit has been completed in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Tirupati municipal corporations. Data of nearly 4,00,000 SHG members was analysed by India SME Forum and MEPMA staff. Phase-2 audit also has begun recently across 14 municipal corporations.

Paddy, wetland conservation Act, three fold growth in IT sector key highlights of VS government

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Among the many initiatives undertaken by the VS Achuthanandan-led government from 2006-11, the most remembered one was the legislation to conserve the paddy land and wetland and to restrict its conversion or reclamation. The Act was aimed to promote the state's agricultural growth and sustain its fragile ecological system. Enacted in 2008, the Act intended to curb the indiscriminate reclamation and conversion of paddy land and wetland in the state. The legislation also increased the level of awareness in society against the reclamation of wetlands and the need to conserve them. The legislation was passed after the select committee of the Assembly held 22 sittings across Kerala which were attended by a large number of people. "This Bill received the highest number of suggestions from a wide spectrum of stakeholders and it was also noted internationally," remembered KP Rajendran, who piloted the Bill as the then Revenue Minister. Achuthanandan's detractors would often cite his role in the agitation against computers decades ago. But it was during his tenure as CM that IT exports grew significantly, with the growth even surpassing the national average. "It should be noted that the three fold growth in IT exports was recorded despite the worst global recession of 2008. Besides, the VS government is credited with adding many new IT parks in the state's technological landscape and permitting many IT majors to set up base in the state," said Joseph C Mathew, Achuthanandan's former IT advisor. The idea for the first district IT park in Kerala at Kollam was announced in January 2009 when Achuthanandan was CM and was opened on February 15, 2011. The first phase of Koratty IT Park became operational on October 10, 2009. It was launched as the first IT park in Kerala under the "Hub and Spoke Model," with Infopark Kochi acting as the hub.

Cabinet clears UK FTA ahead of PM's London visit; deal text expected this week

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the UK this week, where he is expected to formally sign the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with his counterpart Keir Starmer, the Cabinet on Tuesday approved the deal. While the deal was announced on May 6, the text of the agreement was due to be released as legal scrubbing was ongoing. The formal signing is expected on June 24 in the UK, where PM Modi will be accompanied by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The Cabinet decision, PTI reported, comes ahead of Modi's four-day visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives from Wednesday. However, the agreement will come into effect only after it is also passed by the British Parliament. The signing of the deal comes after a period of significant political turmoil in the UK over the past three years, during which London saw three different Prime Ministers. The deal was finally announced after the Starmer-led Labour Party secured a landslide election victory. For India, the UK deal is the first major trade agreement with a Western country since New Delhi decided to quit negotiations to enter the China-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in 2019. While the agreement is expected to open the UK market for Indian textile and leather products, the deal text will reveal how India addressed the looming concern over the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which is expected to significantly impact India's metal exports to the UK. The UK deal assumes significance as it marks the beginning of integration between the advanced services sector in the UK and that of India. India has also opened its doors to high-end British cars and whisky, albeit in a phased manner. The India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) ensures comprehensive market access for goods across all sectors, covering all of India's export interests. India will gain from tariff elimination on approximately 99 per cent of tariff lines, covering nearly 100 per cent of trade value — offering opportunities to boost bilateral trade between India and the UK, the Commerce and Industry Ministry said. The pact includes chapters on goods, services, innovation, government procurement, and intellectual property rights. The two countries have also concluded negotiations on the Double Contribution Convention Agreement, or social security pact. It would help avoid double contributions to social security funds by Indian professionals working for a limited period in Britain. However, talks on the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) are still ongoing. Government officials have pointed out that the India-UK trade deal is also significant as it is one of the most comprehensive free trade agreements that India has entered into so far and could serve as a template for future engagements, including the multiple trade deals currently under negotiation — such as the complex agreement with the European Union. The Ministry had said that the UK FTA will ease mobility for professionals, including contractual service suppliers; business visitors; investors; intra-corporate transferees; partners and dependent children of intra-corporate transferees with the right to work; and independent professionals such as yoga instructors, musicians and chefs. India's exports to the UK rose by 12.6 per cent to $14.5 billion, while imports grew by 2.3 per cent to $8.6 billion in 2024–25. Bilateral trade between India and the UK increased to $21.34 billion in 2023–24 from $20.36 billion in 2022–23. 'Will Do What We Need To': India SLAMS West's ‘Double Standards' Over Russian Oil Imports

Ahead of PM Modi's UK visit, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri firmly defended India's Russian oil imports, stating energy security is a top national priority. He criticized Western "double standards" and urged a balanced global view. His remarks followed new EU sanctions targeting fuels refined from Russian crude, which may affect India's exports to Europe. India's petroleum exports to the EU fell 27% in FY25, while over one-third of its crude oil imports came from Russia. Meanwhile, the Trump-led US administration has warned BRICS nations, including India, of harsh penalties for buying Russian oil. Trump and Senator Lindsey Graham have both threatened tariffs, with Trump calling for 100% secondary tariffs unless Putin agrees to a peace deal within 50 days.#trump #modi #russia #europe #us #trade #crudeoil #ukrainewar #energysecurity #globalsanctions #indiadiplomacy #geopolitics #worldnews #internationalaffairs #toi #toibharat Read More
