German police to interrogate suspect in deadly Mannheim car attack
German police are set to interrogate on Tuesday the man suspected of driving a car into pedestrians in the south-western city of Mannheim, killing two people and leaving 11 injured.
Investigators searched the 40-year-old man's flat in the nearby city of Ludwigshafen late on Monday and seized a number of items, dpa has learnt.
The German national has been transferred from hospital to police custody and is due to be questioned later on Tuesday.
"We will question him today," said Andreas Stenger, head of the criminal police office in the state of Baden-Württemberg, where Mannheim is located.
Investigators hope that the interrogation will provide information about the motive for the incident on Monday, which police called a targeted attack.
Police said there was evidence suggesting the suspect suffers from a psychological disorder.
He reportedly shot himself in the mouth with a blank-firing pistol as he was being taken into custody.
Handwritten notes have been discovered on the car's dashboard containing mathematical formulas for speed and braking distance.
The attack took place on Monday afternoon at the busy Paradeplatz square in central Mannheim, a city of approximately 320,000 people that lies about 80 kilometres south of Frankfurt.
Witnesses reported seeing a car speeding down Planken street, a major shopping thoroughfare, before striking pedestrians near the square.
An 83-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man were killed in the incident, with a total of 11 injured.

The Israeli military on Sunday said it had located the remains of Hamas military leader Mohammed al-Sinwar in an underground tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip. "Additional bodies of terrorists were located during the operation, their identities are currently under examination," the statement added. The IDF showed the tunnel to several journalists on Sunday, including a dpa photojournalist and also posted a video of soldiers dragging a corpse wrapped in white out of the tunnel on its Telegram channel. The military said it was very far underground, in the immediate vicinity of the clinic. The dpa photographer described a strong smell of decay in the air, and said the floor was covered in worms. In one room, which had apparently been used as a dormitory, there were many blankets on the floor. He said no technical equipment or similar items were visible.

German police shoot and kill female knife attacker
A woman has been shot dead by police at the Theresienwiese in Munich after she attacked and injured at least two people with a knife, according to information obtained by the DPA news agency. The police said officers fired at the 30-year-old, who was then taken to hospital. According to information from DPA, she succumbed to her injuries there although the police initially did not confirm this. The police said the woman initially injured a man with a knife in the area behind the Theresienwiese, home to the world famous Oktoberfest. Shortly afterwards, she injured another woman with the knife. The condition of the two was not immediately known. It was also unclear whether the woman had any connection to them. Several patrols were dispatched to arrest the woman, who continued to wield the knife. Police then opened fire. The number of shots fired could not initially be determined, according to police. The woman was taken from the scene to a Munich hospital. There was no danger to the general public, police said in a brief initial statement to the media in the evening. The case brings back memories of an incident at Hamburg's main train station about two weeks ago: a woman randomly stabbed people on a platform for long-distance trains that was crowded with passengers. According to police, 18 people were injured in the attack. Officers arrested the 39-year-old woman and a magistrate ordered her placement in a psychiatric clinic.
