German police shoot and kill female knife attacker
A woman has been shot dead by police at the Theresienwiese in Munich after she attacked and injured at least two people with a knife, according to information obtained by the DPA news agency.
The police said officers fired at the 30-year-old, who was then taken to hospital.
According to information from DPA, she succumbed to her injuries there although the police initially did not confirm this.
The police said the woman initially injured a man with a knife in the area behind the Theresienwiese, home to the world famous Oktoberfest.
Shortly afterwards, she injured another woman with the knife.
The condition of the two was not immediately known.
It was also unclear whether the woman had any connection to them.
Several patrols were dispatched to arrest the woman, who continued to wield the knife.
Police then opened fire.
The number of shots fired could not initially be determined, according to police.
The woman was taken from the scene to a Munich hospital.
There was no danger to the general public, police said in a brief initial statement to the media in the evening.
The case brings back memories of an incident at Hamburg's main train station about two weeks ago: a woman randomly stabbed people on a platform for long-distance trains that was crowded with passengers.
According to police, 18 people were injured in the attack.
Officers arrested the 39-year-old woman and a magistrate ordered her placement in a psychiatric clinic.

Nicholas reportedly admitted to killing both of his parents, calling it a 'righteous kill', and told investigators he abandoned a stolen vehicle on I-20, which was later found by the Warren County Sheriff's Office. Two women arrested after reports of gunshots in Tuolumne County
( — The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a 38-year-old woman banging on the door and having a firearm on Wednesday afternoon. According to TCSO, deputies responded with emergency lights and sirens to the area of Tanager Drive in Twain Hart at around 12:30 p.m. for reports of Cheris Cox, 28, of Sacramento banging on the door. Before the deputies arrived, Cox had fled the scene in a vehicle. The investigation showed that Cox had broken a window at the residence, stated TCSO. When deputies searched the area, they were unable to find her. A few hours later, at about 9:20 p.m., deputies headed back to the scene after getting multiple 911 calls reporting a possible drive-by shooting, TCSO said. A witness told the deputies that a white pickup truck arrived at the home, and the driver started to yell and fired a gun, followed by more yelling and hearing more gunshots. Cox, who was the only person in the vehicle, was detained in handcuffs. When the deputies walked up to the vehicle, they saw a shotgun in plain view near the center console, deputies said. Deputies reached out to other TCSO Investigations Division Detectives to come to the scene. After an investigation, detectives learned that there was a confrontation between Cox and 42-year-old Destiny Kaiser of Modesto, TCSO stated. During the confirmation, both women were armed with firearms that were not registered to them and fired shots negligently within a residential area, deputies said. Detectives placed both Cox and Kaiser under arrest and transported them to Dambacher Detention Center. Authorities said that Cox was booked for felony vandalism, willfully negligently discharging a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, and for being a person prohibited from owning or possessing firearms. Arkansas mayor, murder victim's sister reacts to Grant Hardin's escape
The town where Arkansas prison escapee and convicted murderer Grant Hardin once served as police chief remains on edge, according to its mayor who is also the sister of Hardin's victim. "Anxiety is still high," Cheryl Tillman, the mayor of Gateway, Arkansas, told USA TODAY in an interview May 28. "I think everybody's still on alert, being vigilant, doing every precaution that they can." Hardin, 56, escaped from the North Central Unit in Calico Rock on May 25, wearing a "makeshift outfit designed to mimic law enforcement," according to the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Hardin had been serving time for the 2017 murder of James Appleton, Tillman's brother, in Gateway and the 1997 rape of a school teacher in nearby Rogers. He was sentenced to 80 years on the combined convictions, according to court records. Tillman described Hardin, who served as Gateway's police chief while Tillman was on the city council in 2016, as "very arrogant" and "angry." "He's an evil person," Tillman said. Hardin remains at large as of Wednesday night, with the FBI, Department of Corrections, Arkansas State Police and local police were working to find Hardin, officials said earlier in the day. Hardin pleaded guilty to in 2017 to murder in the first degree for shooting and killing Appleton in February of the same year, according to court records. Appleton's brother-in-law and Cheryl's husband, Andrew Tillman, told Benton County Sheriff's investigators that he was on the phone with Appleton when he was shot, according to a probable cause affidavit. Andrew was the Gateway's mayor at the time of the shooting. "Everybody in this town knew James. They knew that they could call James if they needed help on anything," Tillman said. Tillman said that learning of Hardin's escape brought back memories of the murder. "Everything was happening all over again. From the time he shot my brother and the time we had to go to court with him," Tillman said. The 1997 rape was the focus of a 2023 documentary titled "Devil in the Ozarks," for which Tillman was interviewed. She said that the interview was "tough to do." "We've since been in touch with the subjects of that film and law enforcement and are praying for Hardin's immediate capture in the name of justice and the victims and their families' peace of mind," Ari Mark, one of the executive producers of the documentary, told USA TODAY in a statement May 28. Tillman emphasized the need for residents of Gateway, a place she described as "a very quiet town" where "everybody knows everybody," to remain vigilant while Hardin remained at-large.
