Jaccob Slavin Heralded For Dominant Team USA Performance

Yahoo21-02-2025

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin has arguably been the best defensive defenseman in hockey for a while now.
But thanks to a little bit more exposure on one of the biggest stages for the sport in years, it seems like the rest of the hockey world is finally starting to catch up to that fact.
"A little? That's all they were talking about," joked Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour. "It's great. Great for him because he goes under the radar maybe. Not here, but just in general. It was good observations by everyone and he obviously played well. It was warranted."
Sullivan: "Jaccob Slavin might be one of the best defending defensemen in the league, bar none."
— Michael Russo (@RussoHockey) February 21, 2025
Slavin averaged 23:16 across four games for the USA and was only on the ice for two goals against all tournament.
Those goals both came against Team Sweden in a game in which the Americans were resting players and more so, both goals were scored on the opposite side of the ice from him.
So Slavin was perfect in two games against Team Canada and one against Team Finland.

There were countless times were Slavin saved a goal or killed a play before it could even materialize.
The veteran defenseman is one of the best players in the world with his defensive anticipation and elite stick work (per Sportslogiq, Slavin leads the league in blocked passes) and it was on full display.
He was a massive wall in front of his own net and one of the reasons why the USA was able to have such a good tournament.
Even his teammates who had to face off against him agreed.

"Probably one of the best defensive defensemen in the league but he can also play with the puck," said Mikko Rantanen. "Sometimes people forget. I watched the game last night and he was the best d-man out there for both teams. Just tells you how good and smart of a player he is."
"It was the first or second shift and he stood me up on the blueline," said Sebastian Aho. "Everyone here knows how good he is. Obviously now with a little bit of a bigger platform, everyone sees him. Best-on-best and he did a pretty damn good job shutting those guys down. He's an unbelievable d-man and we're so lucky to have him."
Jaccob Slavin 🇺🇸 is the poster child for why a second NHL Award should be created for defensive defensemen.Elite.

The entire hockey world couldn't stop talking about Slavin last night, and even the ESPN broadcast was heaping praise upon him.
Everyone in Carolina has known just how good Slavin is, but it's nice to see him get the recognition he rightly deserves.
Created a player archetype a couple of years ago to measure how disruptive a player is defensively. Breaking up plays etc. Here's how it grades out over the last 3 seasons for defencemen...1. Slavin🇺🇸2. Heiskanen🇫🇮3. Toews🇨🇦4. A. Vlasic🇺🇸5. M. Anderson🇺🇸6. Brodin🇸🇪7.… https://t.co/ot1E3KpT2l

Gary Bettman chides Paul Bissonnette over ‘ridiculous' NHL state tax concern

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman chided Paul Bissonnette's 'ridiculous' concern over the believed advantage Florida hockey teams have due to the lack of income tax in the state. Bissonnette, who played in the NHL and minor league hockey before launching his media career, had previously expressed the concern following the Panthers' Eastern Conference Final series-clinching victory over the Hurricanes on TNT. TNT hockey analyst Anson Carter pushed back almost immediately when Bissonnette brought it up, and Bettman was forceful in his dismissal of it when he broached the subject on Monday night. Advertisement Gary Bettman is pictured during the TNT broadcast on June 9. Screengrab via X/@awfulannouncing 'When the Florida teams weren't good, which was for about 17 years, OK, nobody said anything about it,' Bettman said before puck drop on Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Panthers and Oilers. 'For those of you that played, were you sitting there with a tax table? No, you wanted to go to a good organization in a place you wanted to live where you wanted to raise your kids and send them to school. You wanted to play in a first-class arena with a first-class training facility with an owner, an organization, a GM and a coach that you were comfortable with. 'And you wanted to have good teammates so you would have a shot at winning. That's what motivates. Could it be a little bit of a factor if everything else were equal? I suppose, but that's not it. By the way, state taxes high in Los Angeles, high in New York. What are we going to do, subsidize those teams?' Advertisement Paul Bissonnette is pictured June 9. Getty Images While Bettman seemed to slam dunk on Bissonnette during the segment, the hockey analyst took it in stride and even chimed in on social media with a post on X in response to a clip of the segment. 'Get the people talking. Look at that engagement. Throwing Gary softballs,' Bissonnette wrote on X.

Riley Gaines says Simone Biles 'sold out' young female athletes in heated debate over transgender sports

Former 12-time NCAA all-American swimmer Riley Gaines is speaking out about her 'X' feud with Olympic gymnast Simone Biles over transgender athletes competing in women's sports. The social media argument began on Friday after Gaines called out a Minnesota high school, whose softball team won a state championship after playing with a transgender pitcher. Gaines, who noted that she was not surprised comments were turned off on the high school's post, said, "to be expected when your star player is a boy." Simone Biles rebuked Gaines, saying she was "truly sick" and a "sore loser" for her comment, suggesting she should be "uplifting" transgender athletes. Biles also said Gaines should "bully someone (her) own size, which would ironically be a male." Simone Biles Doesn't Realize What She's Admitting About Trans Women In Her Posts, Riley Gaines Says "Friday afternoon, I get a notification on my phone," Gaines told "The Will Cain Show" on Monday. "It says, 'Simone Biles tagged you in something on X.' I was overwhelmed with excitement. Like, this is someone I've looked up to. She's a role model for me. [I] was so excited about this until I clicked on the notification and, of course, I had to read it like five times... make sure it wasn't a fake profile. ... It has been the talk of X, really all social platforms, TikTok, Instagram, every article that has been posted. … I believe she truthfully incinerated her legacy with just two tweets this past weekend." The swimmer says that while Biles' comments on her appearance did not hurt her feelings, she felt heartbroken thinking of young gymnasts, like her teen sister, who has looked up to the Olympic champion. Read On The Fox News App "That's the people who look up to Simone. That's the platform that she's built and curated and developed. Those people love her," she said. "They admire her and suddenly, again, in one tweet, and I would imagine an aim to be virtuous and inclusive and kind and compassionate, she sold out people like my younger sister. That's how I felt. That's what made me feel heartbroken." Several of Simone Biles' teammates have reached out to Gaines amid the 'X' debate to share their personal support for the swimmer's stance, she shared with Fox News. "They believe the intention behind this is that Simone has a new docu-series coming out on Netflix," Gaines told Fox News. "They believe it's an attempt to put her name, her profile, her face, her image back in the public sphere, but again, I think this ultimately backfired on her." Ultimately, Gaines says standing up for women's sports is not a divisive issue among everyday Americans. "This isn't a polarizing issue if you can remove yourself from the opinions of the elite. The people who are on the private jets, if you remove yourself from the opinion of Hollywood or elected representation, this truthfully is not a polarizing, divisive issue. It's a unifying issue."Original article source: Riley Gaines says Simone Biles 'sold out' young female athletes in heated debate over transgender sports

Nation's No. 1 Recruit Sends Clear Message to Former Tennessee Commit

Nation's No. 1 Recruit Sends Clear Message to Former Tennessee Commit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One of the biggest moves the Miami Hurricanes made this offseason was landing the Class of 2026 offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell, who On3 Industry Rankings has as the No. 1 recruit in the nation. Advertisement Though it's clear head coach Mario Cristobal isn't looking to slow down, and on Friday, hosted several talented recruits, including defensive lineman Tyson Bacon, who was committed to the Tennessee Volunteers from Oct. 21, 2024, to April 23, 2025. After his official visit with the Hurricanes, Bacon posted a photo of himself in a Hurricanes uniform on social media, captioning it "305?", which is the area code for Coral Gables. The post went on to catch the attention of Cantwell, who reposted it, saying, "Make the move…" Of course, it's not a huge surprise to see Cantwell trying his hand to help land the former Tennessee commit, as On3 Industry Rankings has Bacon as a three-star recruit, the No. 46 defensive lineman and the No. 442 player in the nation. Advertisement Last season, he put up solid numbers for Hoover High School, accumulating 33 tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, 11 hurries and two pass deflections in 13 games played. Miami isn't the only team competing for his commitment either, as Bacon has also had official visits with Georgia (May 17), Florida (May 30), with more scheduled with Michigan (June 13), Alabama (June 17) and Tennessee (June 20). Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario CristobalSam Navarro-Imagn Images If Cantwell's recruiting skills do pay off, though, and Miami lands Bacon, he would be a big addition to their 2026 recruiting class, which currently ranks No. 2 in the ACC and No. 8 in the nation, per On3.
