The South African Police Services (Saps) says it is encouraged after receiving nearly 200 000 new applications from South Africans, the majority of whom are women wanting to join the service and be police officers.
This recruitment drive bodes good news for the country as it battles criminal activity in various provinces. However, it is also a reflection of the harsh reality of unemployment, particularly among the youth.
Youth unemployment
With the latest youth unemployment statistics hovering around 46%, the SAPS recruitment drive could help plug the hole, albeit slowly.

SAPS said it is encouraged by the level of interest shown by young people in the country in joining its ranks and fighting crime.
'In the last 48 hours, more than 185 000 applicants have applied for a spot on its Basic Police Learning Development Training Programme(BPLDTP), said police spokesperson Brigadier Athlena Mathe.
Gauteng leading
Mathe said Gauteng is leading the pack.
'In terms of job applications per province, Gauteng is leading with more than 53 000, followed by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) with 30 000, Limpopo follows with 20 000, Eastern Cape with 19 000 and Mpumalanga with 18 000.
'The Western Cape is number six in terms of applications with 17 000, followed by Free State with 14 000, North West 11 000 and lastly Northern Cape with 4 000,' Mathe said.
Women leading
Women are also leading the pack, according to Mathe.
'Female applicants are leading with more than 105 000 so far followed by male applicants that are standing at just over 80 000'.
Mathe said the Saps understands the overwhelming response from the public to become police officers, urging the applicants to be patient.
'Applicants are requested to be patient as the Saps official website is inundated with applications. Where delays are experienced, applicants are encouraged to continue to refresh the careers page,' Mathe said.

Andrew Whitfield, the DA's then shadow police minister, accused Cele of making use of the official aircraft as his taxi or e-hailing service to and from a political party event. Whitfield also rejected Cele and the SAPS's averment that the former minister's use of the helicopter was in line with his 'constitutional responsibility as a Minister of Police'. Next Stay Close ✕ In addition, Whitfield said should it be found that the SAPS helicopter collected Cele from any location other than its assigned base (and particularly if he was collected from King Shaka International Airport) and/or that its flight plan included no other activity but to transport him to and from the manifesto launch event, it would no doubt support the submissions that the former minister's use of the helicopter was solely personal. He further stated that it was wholly unrelated to any oversight or operational duties (which the former minister is in any event not entitled to undertake), and certainly not in line with his constitutional responsibility as the police minister. Whitfield alleged that Cele used his position in the national executive to improperly benefit himself by making use of an SAPS helicopter for private and party-political travel. However, Gcaleka found evidence indicating that the operational planning relating to policing for the launch of the ANC manifesto event was arranged by members of the SAPS led by one of its senior generals. 'The evidence at the Public Protector's disposal indicates that as part of safety and security planning for the event, approval for utilisation of an SAPS helicopter was granted by the Air Wing Support Unit Commander for the purpose of aerial surveillance and law enforcement during ANC manifesto launch,' reads Gcaleka's report. The only passengers were Cele and the top general in the SAPS helicopter used for aerial surveillance covering areas around Moses Mabhida Stadium during the ANC manifesto launch. Cele also used a commercial airline to travel from Cape Town to Durban and back. Gcaleka could not find any evidence to indicate that the SAPS helicopter was used to transport Cele beyond the various operational points at Moses Mabhida Stadium and surrounding areas.

As the lead investigating officer in the case of missing six-year-old Joshlin Smith, Captain Lombard played a pivotal role in steering the investigation and ultimately served as a key state witness in the kidnapping and human trafficking trial that followed. More recently, he and his team were at the forefront of another urgent and emotionally charged case — the safe recovery of nine-day-old baby Mogamat Imaad Shamar, who was abducted on Saturday, 28 June, from his mother at Middestad Mall in Bellville. Community shaken as man shot dead in suspected hijacking in Greenwood Park

Gareth Naidoo, from KZN VIP Protection Services, said that upon hearing the commotion, members of the community alerted emergency services. 'Upon arrival, the KZN VIP Protection Services Medics established that while the man was exiting a driveway, a white Toyota Etios pulled up next to his vehicle.
