
Startup demonstrates delivery of goods by large cargo in Tiruchi school
The drone is said to be the largest of its kind in terms of payload capacity, and is launched by Amber Wings, an entity of The ePlane Company, the start-up incubated by the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras. The demonstration was part of the school's 'Role of Engineering in India's Growth and Development' programme.
'The day is not far when Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone flights will be technologically enabled to be operated routinely without any fear of security breaches. Once this happens, drone deliveries in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities will become commonplace, because these areas would constitute 'green zones' where they are permitted to fly,' Satyanarayanan R. Chakravarthy, founder of The ePlane Company and professor of Aerospace Engineering, IIT-M, told The Hindu. The academician is co-founder of Agnikul Cosmos.
Mr. Chakravarthy said that drone applications in the civilian space for deliveries of essential commodities as well as e-commerce cargo are a growing field, especially in India. The company had debuted the 'Atva' Vertical Take off and Landing (VTOL) drone in 2023, with a 2 kg payload capacity, and 10,000 km of flights.
'This is the first time that we are bringing our larger model out of its laboratory conditions. It is still a prototype that has been in development for the past six months. We are all excited to see it perform well in an open setting,' said Mr. Chakravarthy.
At yesterday's demonstration, all eyes were on the drone as it soared high with a speed of 100 km and passed a real bird in the sky without incident. The drone is powered by an onboard battery.

Vasuki Indicus: All About The Longest Snake To Have Ever Lived
The fossil of an ancient serpent, Vasuki Indicus, found along the Kutch coast in the Indian state of Gujarat two decades ago, has offered some never-before-known insights into the evolution of the reptile. Dating back around 47 million years, the giant snake is believed to have been an incredible 49 feet long, surpassing the enormous Titanoboa. The giant Titanoboa from Palaeocene Colombia can grow up to 42 feet in length, and was the indisputable longest snake to have ever walked the earth for decades. Titanoboa is believed to weigh 1.25 tonnes, which is slightly heavier than Vasuki Indicus, which weighs about 1,000 kg. The ancient remains of Vasuki Indicus were initially discovered in 2005 at the Panandhro Lignite Mine in the Kutch district. They were painstakingly examined and identified over many years. Researchers found 27 vertebrae that were largely in good condition. The bones were so large that they were initially believed to be those of a gigantic crocodile, demonstrating the remarkable size of this ancient serpent. Researchers concluded that Vasuki Indicus had a broad, cylindrical body, like big pythons or anacondas of modern age, based on the size of its vertebrae - 38-62 millimetres long and 62-111 millimetres wide. Vasuki Indicus is thought to have existed during the Middle Eocene, when the Earth's temperature was good enough to permit the evolution of large, cold-blooded reptiles. Despite the lack of a full skeleton, scientific examination of Vasuki Indicus' vertebrae has produced amazing reconstructions and insights into its existence. Palaeontologists Debajit Datta and Sunil Bajpai of the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee contended that Vasuki Indicus was probably a slow-moving predator that wrapped its body around its victim till it died. They estimated that it originated in the warm Indian subcontinent and travelled via Europe to Africa between 56 and 34 million years ago. Vasuki Indicus thrived in the now-arid Kutch region's wooded marshes, per The name of the species reveals an intriguing link between contemporary scientific research and ancient Indian mythology. Vasuki Indicus alludes to the treasured mythical serpent known as Vasuki Naag, which is often portrayed as a celestial adornment around Lord Shiva's neck in Hindu scriptures.

IIT Bhubaneswar launches M.Tech in Systems Engineering for industry professionals
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar on Monday announced the launch of the blended mode programme in Systems Engineering, designed specifically for working professionals in the industry. The programme is set to commence soon, with participation from eligible industry professionals eager to advance their systems engineering competencies through this flexible learning model, the institute said. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry, enabling engineers with a minimum of three years of experience in plants or industrial settings to enhance their expertise in Modern Systems Engineering, the institute said in a statement on Monday. This programme aims to help participants build the knowledge needed for understanding the behaviour of engineering systems through its courses on Modelling of System Behaviour, Testing Systems Performance, Design of Systems and the tools and techniques for predicting system behaviour, such as reliability engineering, statistical machine learning, the statement said. The institute said that the curriculum for the course was developed in collaboration with Applied Materials India Private Limited, a subsidiary of Applied Materials, Inc, the global leader in materials engineering solutions for the semiconductor industry. Speaking on the launch of the programme, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, Shreepad Karmalkar, said, "Such programmes foster deeper collaboration between academia and industry. Beyond professional development, they open avenues for joint R&D (research and development), leading to innovations that can significantly benefit society and contribute to the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat."

IIT Bombay Launches Online Certificate Courses In Cybersecurity & Software Development
Last Updated: IIT Bombay has launched two certificate programmes in cybersecurity and software development to help students and professionals gain hands-on skills in high-demand tech fields. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has introduced two new professional certificate programmes aimed at upskilling students and working professionals in the high-demand fields of cybersecurity and software development. These certifications will be delivered through the institute's Trust Lab, an initiative under the Department of Computer Science and Engineering focused on fostering research and education in trustworthy systems. The programmes are now open for applications via a Google Form, offering a flexible and modular curriculum curated by IIT Bombay faculty. According to the institute, the objective is to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on expertise in areas critical to secure and scalable software systems. Participants can enrol in either of the following tracks: Each track comprises a series of courses, and candidates must complete any three approved courses within a chosen track to qualify for the final certification. Learners can also opt to take individual courses without committing to the full programme initially. In the Cybersecurity track, participants will explore cryptographic protocols, network and web security, and learn to evaluate digital vulnerabilities. In contrast, the Software Development track is structured to build strong foundations in full-stack engineering, version control, and cloud-native development, covering tools like Django, React, Docker, and MERN stack. Notably, some courses — such as Web Security — are shared across both tracks and can count towards certification in either. Who Can Apply? The courses are open to: Admissions are conducted on a per-course basis, with preference given to applicants who demonstrate strong motivation or industry experience, particularly those intending to pursue the full certification. Course Format And Evaluation The programmes follow a blended learning model, combining pre-recorded video lectures, weekend live sessions, and lab assignments supported by teaching assistants. Participants are expected to commit 8–10 hours per week. Assessments include a final in-person exam at IIT Bombay, carrying 75% of the total grade along with continuous evaluations contributing the remaining 25%. Each successfully completed course results in a Course Completion Certificate, and candidates who finish three courses within a track receive a Professional Certificate, officially issued by IIT Bombay. The recommended duration to complete the certification is one year, with a maximum limit of two years for added flexibility.
