Lewisham nan lived in home ‘with no heating or hot water' before dying

A Lewisham family is fighting to keep their home following the death of their matriarch nan, who lived there for nearly 40 years.
Lou Abbott moved into her Lewisham home in the late 1980s and lived there until her death in 2025.

At the time of her death, the property was in poor condition, with unresolved heating and safety issues.
Lou's granddaughter, Shannon Abbott, told the News Shopper: 'Lewisham Council's contractor came to the home to do a standard gas safety check.
'The man was in and out in about 10 minutes, but we didn't know if that's how long a gas safety check usually takes.
'The next morning, the carbon monoxide alarm went off.'
Contractors returned promptly after the alarm went off to cap the gas and provide temporary heating solutions, including a hot plate and electric heaters.
However, the family was informed that it would take eight days for a full repair of the boiler to be completed.
Lou suffered from with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and was therefore on the priority list.
Shannon, 20, added: 'When the repair workers came, they told us the boiler was over 20-years-old and couldn't be replaced there and then.
'So that prolonged the whole situation, leaving my nan without hot water and heating.'
Rubble inside the boiler prevented it from working, causing further delays.
Soon after, Lou was hospitalised.
Shannon explained: 'My nan was taken to hospital due to health complications.
'We are not trying to say that the council caused her death, as she did have secondary breast cancer.
'However, we do believe that it definitely contributed to it, because she already had poor health as it is.
'Living in that condition was only going to make it worse, and the last moments she spent in the house, she was greeted with unfair treatment from Lewisham Council.'
Lou passed away on February 14, at the age of 73.
The boiler at Lou's property remained unfixed until weeks after she had passed.
Now, Lewisham Council is reviewing whether to reclaim the tenancy under their Succession Policy.
She said: 'Nan was the sole tenant on record, even though my uncle is living down there.
'They are trying to say that nobody is entitled to live there and they won't rehome the people that currently live there because they're not priority.'
The Abbott family have been going back-and-forth with Lewisham Council since February and as of June 19, no final decision has been made.
Kelly, Lou's daughter and Shannon's mum, continues to appeal the decision, though Shannon says Lewisham Council us 'very reluctant to take accountability for the negligence' as Lou was a vulnerable person.
To push for change, Shannon started a petition to help her family keep the home.
Shannon described her grandmother as a loving mother of 12 and family matriarch who was unbothered by housing several relatives.

Shannon and her husband cherished their garden, spending countless summer days hosting family barbecues and celebrations beneath the open sky.
She often took her grandchildren and great-grandchildren outside to pick apples from her beloved tree, tidy up the garden, and plant flowers together.

Shannon emphasised that the family is deeply committed to keeping the home, which holds far more meaning than just bricks and mortar.
She said how fulfilling her grandmother's last wish to keep the property is their driving motivation, and the family is fighting hard to make that happen.
The News Shopper asked Lewisham Council, who admitted delays and shortcomings in their service to Lou but denied responsibility for her death or the family's tenancy dispute.
A spokesperson for Lewisham Council said: 'We extend our deepest condolences to the family and appreciate that dealing with Council bureaucracy at such a time is an added burden.
'However, we are legally bound to follow our Succession Policy when deciding if a tenancy can be passed on to a member of a tenant's family.
'It is a question of fairness for all tenants and making sure housing is available for those who are in most need in the borough.
'Although we denied the application we received, we have been asked to review this decision and are waiting on new information to enable us to do so.
'We are extremely sorry for the delay in replacing Mrs Abbott's boiler in the period before she was admitted to hospital.
'The family made a formal complaint to us which prompted a full investigation, the details of which we have provided to them.
'Our service was not to the standard our residents should expect, especially given Mrs Abbott's vulnerable condition, and there were certainly opportunities missed to complete the works sooner.
'Mrs Abbott was provided with alternative heating and cooking options, and vouchers to help with costs, but we accept that these were inadequate, and we were not responsive enough to the family's concerns.'

Healthcare staff who 'turn a blind eye' to colleagues being sexually harassed at work face putting patient safety at risk, doctors have warned. Medics claim that overlooking these incidents allows other toxic behaviours 'to perpetuate'. It comes as members of the British Medical Association (BMA) called for NHS trusts to include active bystander training – which aims to equip people with the skills to challenge unacceptable conduct – in mandatory training programmes. Delegates at the union's annual representative meeting (ARM) in Liverpool also voted for the BMA to lobby for a national anonymous reporting system for victims of sexual harassment. Dr Helen Neary, co-chairwoman of the BMA consultants committee, said: 'People are bystanders at all levels, and a working culture that turns a blind eye to this behaviour is also a risk to patient safety, enabling other poor behaviours to perpetuate.' The motion urged NHS organisations to probe allegations of sexual misconduct using trained investigators external to the trust. Dr Neary added: 'No one should feel unsafe at work. Yet the appalling truth is that doctors, disproportionately women, are still subject to sexual harassment, abuse and assault in the workplace – often by their fellow doctors. This has to stop. 'Not only is it obviously completely unacceptable and has a devastating impact on victims, but also affects the quality of care and workforce capacity as poor behaviours will do nothing to retain staff in the NHS.' In March, the latest NHS staff survey found one in 12 (8.82%) of workers were the target of unwanted sexual behaviour such as offensive comments, touching and assaults. The proportion was similar to that reported in 2023 (8.79%) when the question was first asked as part of the survey. Last October, NHS England launched a new national sexual misconduct policy framework to ensure trusts had robust policies in place for staff to report incidents. Speaking to delegates at the BMA ARM in Liverpool, Professor Bhairavi Sapra said that while the framework is a 'very welcome first step', it is not mandatory. 'It is up to individual employers to adopt it, and even then, perpetrators can simply move on from one employer to another without accountability for those in positions of power to prevent this behaviour,' she added. 'Worse still, there is no national reporting mechanism. That means if someone wants to report an incident months later in a different workplace, they face an uphill battle, often alone. 'Survivors have told us why they don't come forward. They fear being told they're overreacting. 'They fear retaliation or reputational damage. They fear nothing will change, and sadly, they are not wrong. 'Investigations, when they do happen, are rarely trauma informed, often the process itself can feel like another form of harm.' Dr Neary said: 'As the trade union and professional association for all doctors in the UK – from those beginning their careers as medical students to retirement and beyond – the BMA welcomes the legal obligation placed on the NHS to protect employees from sexual harassment. 'This vote makes some excellent suggestions on how this work can go further, including anonymous reporting, that will encourage those concerned about coming forward to do so, and better equipping doctors on how they can support colleagues when they witness sexual harassment at work.' Prof Sapra also claimed the 'power imbalance' in the medical profession is 'stark', adding: 'Junior staff rely on senior medical staff for training, for references and for their very careers. 'That dependency makes them especially vulnerable and often silent.' An NHS England spokesperson said: 'It is totally unacceptable that NHS staff experience sexual misconduct or harassment at work – this behaviour has no place in the health service, and all organisations must take robust and compassionate action to prevent it. 'The NHS Sexual Safety Charter has been adopted by every Integrated Care Board and NHS Trust in England, which encourages consideration of external, independent investigators in complex or sensitive cases – and all NHS organisations should ensure that those leading these processes are properly trained to handle them with the seriousness and sensitivity they require.'

New research has revealed that 72% of owners admit to pulling a sickie to look after poorly pups, costing the UK economy an estimated £13.8 billion a year in lost wages. The average person takes eight days off a year to nurse their dog, with 52% caring more about their animal's health than their partner's, according to the study by pet food company ( Nearly 40% admit they've lost sleep worrying about their dog's health, while 36% say they'd never trust anyone else to look after a sick pooch. Dr Sean McCormack, Head Vet at said: "Sick days are really stressful and tough to deal with for dogs and their owners. Anything we can do together to help limit sick days is hugely beneficial. "While some illnesses can't be prevented, ensuring your dog is eating a complete, balanced and nutritious diet, getting the right amount of exercise and having regular health check ups can help to limit the need to take too much time off and your pets living healthier lives." London owners can get a quick health check for their dog at Victoria Park this week, just by letting their pet pee on specially designed lampposts equipped with pH tests. These detect abnormal levels of acid or alkaline in urine, which can be early indicators of health issues. Dr McCormack and in-house behaviourist will also be on hand to interpret the results and offer advice on how to ensure your dog is in tip-top shape. "A dog's urine can tell us a lot about what's going on inside their body," Dr McCormack said. "By making these tests quick and easy for owners, we're helping to catch potential issues early - before they become more serious or harder to treat." The team will be in Victoria Park on 24 and 25 June from 8am to 12pm and 3pm to 7pm. How to spot when your dog needs a vet check 1. Eating habits If your dog suddenly goes off their food or becomes ravenously hungry, it could be a red flag. Sudden weight loss or gain is always worth investigating. 2.
