2025 Philadelphia 76ers draft big board 6.0: The best fits at No. 3
The Philadelphia 76ers were rewarded with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft following a tough 24-58 season. The Sixers entered the season with championship expectations, but injuries decimated the roster and derailed any chances the team had at seriously contending for a title.
As they head into this draft, there are plenty of options for the Sixers to look into. The goal for them is to get younger and add a player who can help them bounce back and turn things around. Philadelphia should be looking into every option in order to take the next steps forward toward title contention.
Here is the sixth draft big board with the draft now just one week away. If one wants to see big board 1.0, it can be seen here and 2.0 can be seen here. While 3.0 can be seen here, 4.0 is here, and 5.0 is here. With that said, let's get into big board 6.0:
1. VJ Edgecombe, Baylor
2024-25 stats: 15.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.1 spg, 43.6% FG, 34% 3FG
Previous ranking: 1
Many will be clamoring for Ace Bailey, and he will be a top option for Philadelphia, but Sixers Wire is firmly in the Edgecombe camp. He has the outlook to be the better player long term. He is supremely athletic, able to take any defender off the dribble, and attack the basket, and he is more than solid defensively as he is aggressive at the point of attack and can create turnovers. He is an outstanding worker, and even though there are some finishing issues at the basket, he is somebody who can contribute on that end right away. On top of that, he appears to be the frontrunner to be selected No. 3 after a strong visit with the Sixers.
In terms of his catch-and-shoot ability, a skill needed on a team with Joel Embiid on it, he shot 45-for-124 (36.3%) on catch-and-shoot 3s per Synergy Sports. However, he did shoot 21-for-45 (46.7%) when unguarded on those attempts. It shows that he can knock down an open look should it be needed. That shows he has a lot of shooting upside for his position and should be a great option. All of these players have flaws, Bailey and Edgecombe included, but it feels as if Edgecombe has the best chance to produce right away.
2. Ace Bailey, Rutgers
2024-25 stats: 17.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.3 bpg, 1.0 spg, 46% FG, 34.6% 3FG
Previous ranking: 3
Let's get one thing straight: Bailey is not Kevin Durant. It doesn't mean he isn't going to be a good player, but he is not Durant. He has good measurements with star potential, but the knock on him is that he settles for bad shots and the fact that Rutgers did not make the NCAA Tournament. Despite having Bailey, and Dylan Harper, the Scarlet Knights finished 15-17 and barely made their own conference tournament in the Big 10. He has fallen a bit on a lot of draft boards, but Bailey figures to be at least an All-Star at the next level, and the Sixers have to consider him along with Edgecombe at the top.
In terms of his catch-and-shoot percentages, he shot 36-for-93 (38.7%) on those opportunities from deep. He shot 29-for-66 (43.9%) on those attempts while he was guarded. It shows that he has the skill and the want to take and make tough shots. There is a lot to like about his game, but there are some rough edges he needs to smooth out.
3. Kon Knueppel, Duke
2024-25 stats: 14.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.0 spg, 47.9% FG, 40.6% 3FG
Previous ranking: 2
I get it. Bailey is long and athletic, and Edgecombe has long term potential, but will they contribute right away at this next level? Knueppel has shot up draft boards and when considering the Sixers could use another playmaker, he makes a lot of sense. Either way, if the Sixers are thinking spacing and elite shooting, then Knueppel should be their guy. He has a high basketball IQ being able to navigate off screens to get himself open for looks, he competes on the defensive end, and he is an underrated passer. There are defensive limitations, but he is for sure a rotation player in this league due to his shooting ability and playmaking skills.
He shot 77-for-178 (43.3%) on catch-and-shoot 3s and was an impressive 36-for-84 (42.9%) on those attempts while guarded. He cannot do the things Bailey, Edgecombe, or Tre Johnson can do, but Knueppel should be on the radar of president Daryl Morey and Co. should they decide to trade down and add to the depth of the roster--which is another need for this group.
4. Tre Johnson, Texas
2024-25 stats: 19.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.7 apg, 0.9 spg, 42.7% FG, 39.7% 3FG
Previous ranking: 4
Johnson has his flaws, but scoring and shooting certainly aren't one of them. He has an ability to light up the scoreboard at any moment by taking defenders to the basket, being able to knock down tough 3s, and he can shoot off the catch or off the dribble. If the Sixers are thinking a microwave scorer, then Johnson should be their guy. One can argue that he isn't worthy of a No. 3 pick, but he has skills that will translate to the NBA level.
As mentioned, he shot 51-for-125 (40.8%) on catch-and-shoot 3s. He was 32-for-77 (41.6%) on those attempts while guarded. Even off the dribble, he shot 38-for-99 (38.4%) on those 3-point attempts. He is an electric player and the Sixers should certainly give him a look before they decide on a player with this selection.
5. Khaman Maluach, Duke
2024-25 stats: 8.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 0.5 apg, 1.3 bpg, 0.2 spg, 71.2% FG
Previous ranking: 6
Maluach would be an option for Philadelphia should it want big man depth behind Embiid. With that being said, the Sixers do expect veteran Andre Drummond to exercise his player option for 2025-26 so he figures to return, and there is already young big man Adem Bona who made a name for himself as a rookie. However, Maluach stands at 7-foot-2 and the Sixers could always use some more size off the bench which has been an issue in the past.
With that being said, Maluach is a bit raw offensively as he limited to putbacks and lob dunks off the pick-and-roll. While he does have soft hands to make all of this work on the offensive end, the Sixers would need him to add some type of jumper to his game. Philadelphia needs versatility out of its big men and Maluach would have to add to his game in order to stick.
6. Jeremiah Fears, Oklahoma
2024-25 stats: 17.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 4.1 apg, 1.6 spg, 43.4% FG, 28.4% 3FG
Previous ranking: 5
These NBA Playoffs have shown the value of having three ball-handlers on the floor at times. One has to believe the Sixers are watching the playoffs with the idea that they can get to that level if they can bring in another ball-handler in the lineup. Fears fits that mold as somebody who can get the job done on the offensive end by running the offense and making things go smoothly.
Fears was able to produce good numbers in the tough SEC and improved as the season wore on. Overall, he shot 36.1% on catch-and-shoot 3s and is an elite passer out of the pick-and-roll. If the jumper continues on an upward trajectory, then he is going to stick in this league for quite some time. The Sixers could always use another player with a high IQ to make life easier for the stars and Fears fits that mold.

Duke's Kon Knueppel confirms he will met with Sixers ahead of draft

Duke's Kon Knueppel confirms he will met with Sixers ahead of draft The Philadelphia 76ers will have plenty of options to turn to with the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA draft. They will have their options of either Rutgers star Ace Bailey or Baylor's VJ Edgecombe as they sit at the top of the draft board, but there are other options as well. For example, Duke guard Kon Knueppel is certainly making a case that he should be selected with the No. 3 pick. He averaged 14.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting 40.6% from deep in his freshman season for the Blue Devils and will be a guy who the Sixers will consider either at No. 3 or even in a trade down scenario. Knueppel hopped on "The Bill Simmons Podcast" and confirmed that he will meet with the Sixers. He added he won't work out for them, but he has a Zoom interview scheduled with them: I have a Zoom with them this week, but I did not work out with them. Knueppel is a strong choice for Philadelphia at No. 3 as he is somebody who can shoot the heck out of the ball, but he can also put the ball on the floor and use his strength to be able to make an impact from the perimeter. There is a lot of questions about his lack of athleticism and things of that nature, but the Sixers would be able to hide him on defense.

Nick Castellanos returns to Phillies lineup after benching for 'inappropriate comment'

Associated Press MIAMI (AP) — Nick Castellanos returned the the Philadelphia Phillies lineup for their game against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday after being benched the day before for 'an inappropriate comment' the outfielder made when he was pulled for a defensive replacement on Monday. 'It's gone. It's gone. We're good,' manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday of the benching, which ended Castellanos' streak of 236 consecutive starts. Castellanos played right field and singled in four at-bats against the Marlins on Monday before Johan Rojas replaced him in the bottom of the eighth with Philadelphia up 3-1. Max Kepler moved to right and Rojas played center. Thomson said after Monday's game he had intended to insert Rojas behind Philadelphia's right-handed pitching and indicated that could be the plan moving forward. Thomson added Wednesday that approach 'just depends on the situations.' When asked if he would be OK with taking Castellanos out in a similar situation on Wednesday, Thomson said, 'Probably not today." The plan was also for Castellanos to only be benched for Tuesday's game, Thomson added. The Phillies lost that matchup 8-3. The 33-year-old Castellanos is in his fourth season with the Phillies, who are second in the NL East. He's hitting .278 with seven homers and 36 RBIs. ___ AP MLB: recommended

NBA Mock Draft 2025: Picking 1st round, Boston Celtics selections

The 2025 NBA Draft is less than two weeks away. While the NBA Finals will wrap up in the coming games, the calendar flips quickly into the offseason. It all starts with the draft, where there could be heavy player movement across the league. The top-2 picks of the draft seem relatively straightforward, but afterwards, that's where things start to get uncertain. While the 2024 draft was considered one of the weaker ones in recent memory, there's a lot of talent throughout this year's draft. Advertisement The Celtics hold the 28th and 32nd overall pick, so they have some options. There's also always the chance they could look to trade up or down in the draft, depending on what offers are available. The draft is scheduled for June 25-26 with each round taking up one day. MassLive already looked at four guards, four wings and four big men who the Celtics could pick in the draft. Now, here's a mock draft of every first-round pick, including the Celtics at 28th overall: No. 1: Cooper Flagg, Mavericks Barring any surprise, Flagg is the surefire No. 1 pick going to Dallas. The Mavs get a potential generational star just months after trading away Luka Doncic. Advertisement No. 2: Dylan Harper, Spurs Harper had a stellar season at Rutgers even though the Scarlet Knights didn't make the NCAA Tournament. Considering his size at 6-foot-6, along with his all-around game, there's a reason why many think he'll be a star at the next level. No. 3: V.J. Edgecombe, 76ers One of the most explosive players in the draft, plus he projects well playing both sides of the court at the next level. The Sixers need to hit on this pick after a lost season, so they end up with Edgecombe. No. 4: Ace Bailey, Hornets Another Rutgers product in Bailey, the Hornets get another talented wing to go with the rest of their young roster. It's unclear where Bailey will go at the top of the draft, but he's still expected to go off the board quick come draft night. Advertisement No. 5: Tre Johnson, Jazz The offensive game is there after his lone season at Texas, where he showed off his scoring skills. The defense is another issue, but the Jazz end up taking a high-ceiling guy after they stumbled down the draft lottery. No. 6: Kon Knueppel, Wizards Knueppel could end up being picked even earlier as he was a knockdown shooter in his lone season at Duke. He comes in at 6-foot-7 and is considered an NBA-ready prospect, which is another plus since he turns 20 in August. No. 7: Jeremiah Fears, Pelicans Fears is one of the youngest players in this year's draft as he reclassified and doesn't turn 19 until October. Despite playing against some grown men in the SEC, Fears led Oklahoma throughout last season. He's shown a mature game despite his age, though he'll have to clean up other areas. Advertisement No. 8: Khaman Maluach, Nets The 7-foot-2 big man rounds out the talented Duke freshman trio going in the top-10 of the draft. Maluach is a force defensively with his size and skill, though the offensive game will need work at the next level. Nets go upside here. No. 9: Derik Queen, Raptors Queen starred at Maryland in his lone season as he impressed on both sides of the court. The offensive game is polished, and while he'll need to bulk up for the next level, his fluidness pops out. No. 10: Kasparas Jakucionis, Rockets Jakucionis is another Big Ten product coming out of Illinois as there's a lot to like about his game. He struggled with the physicality and grind of college ball at times, but considering his age, size and overall talent, he projects well to the next level. Advertisement No. 11: Collin Murray-Boyles, Trail Blazers Murray-Boyles is a strong defender, which is what immediately pops out. He'll need to find a shooting touch in the pros, but his defensive versatility will play in the pros. No. 12: Carter Bryant, Bulls Looks the part of NBA athlete coming in at 6-foot-7. Another defensive-minded player who didn't flash too much offensively, though the athleticism and bounce are there. No. 13: Jase Richardson, Hawks With the Hawks in limbo, they end up taking Jase, the son of former NBA player Jason Richardson. While Richardson is young and can improve in certain areas, his feel for the game sticks out immediately. The Michigan State product is a bit small so will need to improve his playmaking and bulk up for the pro game. But there's a lot to like. Advertisement No. 14: Noa Essengue, Spurs The French forward is one of the youngest players in the draft and already possesses impressive size. He'll need to expand his game at the next level to reach star status but already appears to fit athletically. No. 15: Asa Newell, Thunder Showed he can be an efficient scorer in his lone season at Georgia. Will need to add some percentage points to his 3-pointer and create more offensively, but looks well moving on defense. No. 16: Egor Demin, Grizzlies The Grizzlies pick up another guard after trading Desmond Bane to the Magic. Demin's size and playmaking pop out, potentially lessening the burden on Ja Morant. But Demin will have to be able to shoot in the pros to truly reach his potential. Advertisement No. 17: Liam McNeeley, Timberwolves McNeeley excelled in his lone season at UConn and now looks like a top-20 pick heading into the draft. Has good size at 6-foot-7 as the Wolves take the wing who can do a little bit of everything, though Minnesota will hope he can shoot better than he did last season. No. 18: Nique Clifford, Wizards Clifford will do just about everything as he's coming off a strong season at Colorado State. The 6-foot-6 guard is considered more of a glue guy coming into the draft, and for the Wizards, could be a nice influx of leadership. No. 19: Danny Wolf, Nets Wolf is one of the more interesting prospects in the draft considering his size as a 7-footer and playmaking. He doesn't shoot it much, but watching him run in the open court shows why he elected to stay in the draft. Advertisement No. 20: Cedric Coward, Heat Coward is considered one of the more intriguing players in this draft as a late riser. His 6-foot-5 frame and 7-foot-2 wingspan pop off the page. Had a slow rise starting off at Division III ball, meaning he turns 22 later this year. Was committed to Duke out of the transfer portal, but kept his name in the draft. Also only played six games with Washington State last season. The Heat take the risk with their player developmental staff. No. 21: Noah Penda, Jazz High-motor wing who can be disruptive defensively. He'll need to find a shot at the next level, but already looks the part of an NBA player. Advertisement No. 22: Nolan Traore, Hawks Much like other prospects on this list, Traore will need to smooth out his shooting at the next level. But considering he can bring combo guard skills, the Hawks end up taking him for their backcourt. No. 23: Joan Beringer, Pacers Beringer is a bit of a polarizing product, which is why the Pacers end up taking the flier and the risk for him. One of the youngest players in the draft and hasn't played basketball for long, making him a bit of a wild card. No. 24: Drake Powell, Thunder Powell, the North Carolina product, is dubbed as one of the most athletic wings in the draft. So Sam Presti ends up getting another standout defensive player in the draft who he hopes can develop his offensive game. Advertisement No. 25: Walter Payton Jr., Magic Fresh off winning a national championship with Florida, the Magic elect to go with Payton to keep him within the state. The Magic just traded for Bane in a blockbuster deal, but they go with another guard who packs a scoring punch. No. 26: Will Riley, Nets Riley showed flashes during his season at Illinois as a tough shot-maker. He's only 19, so there's plenty of talent for a Nets team looking for whatever they can find at this point in the draft. No. 27: Ben Saraf, Nets One of the best passers in the draft with good size, the Nets go with another player who could develop down the stretch. Advertisement No. 28: Ryan Kalkbrenner, Celtics With the Celtics facing a potential big man question mark, they end up getting one of the most experienced players on the board. Kalkbrenner is a four-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year as the Creighton product reunites with last year's first-round pick in Baylor Scheierman. No. 29: Maxime Raynaud, Suns The Suns are looking for some big man depth and they end up selecting the Stanford product who filled up the stat sheet. While Raynaud will need to add to his game to succeed at the NBA level, the Suns get a big body who has a nice scoring touch. No. 30: Chaz Lanier, Clippers An older product after playing in five years in college. While he might not end up becoming a star, his shooting prowess and experience stand out at this point in the draft. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.
