
Mumbai's Hebbar's Heritage Home turns 100 and continues to be a slice of paradise in the heart of the city
The word hotel means 'means something else abroad and in India, its used very loosely, which is why we changed the named to Hebbar's Heritage Home,' explain Ajit, adding that people were also confused about the word Hindu - 'They didn't understand the concept of us only serving vegetarian food. So we rebranded and modernised ourself. I don't want people to come here and say, it's a hotel, We like the concept of this being a 'home' for travellers.'
'It is very quiet & peaceful, especially as the hostel is in the heart of SoBo. There is a lot of greenery & you can even hear the birds chirping,' says Ajit, as he shows us the various rooms they have available. One can see the love & effort that's gone into maintaining this 100-year-old building and the antiques they house. 'A lot of our money goes into maintenance. It is very tough, but they all belong to my family - the wooden almirahs, trunks that my family traveled with when moving to Mumbai, then Bombay, even the ceramic boxes my grandmum & mum stored wheat & rice in,' he shares.

'We encourage community living,' Ajit says, adding, 'We have people coming from all over the world to stay here for business or on vacation, we also get a lot of backpackers. So everyone, from all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds live and even eat together.
The hotel used to house an in-house South Indian eatery that served simple, homely & cost-effective 'tiffin'. It was relished by the nearby mill workers, taxi drivers, families visiting & even the politicos working in the nearby Mantralaya & Bombay High Court.
However, a court order stating gas cooking wasn't allowed on the ground floor, some 15 years back, put an end to a flourishing business. 'We had several women, wives mostly, who came & asked us to re-start the kitchen,' he saying, laughing, 'Because we used to take care of their husbands' lunch.'
Explaining the reason for their popularity, Ajit tells us, 'Nowadays, we all wear similar clothes, talk the same language & even eat the same food; we are global citizens. But think back to 100 years ago, when my ancestors - South Indians from Mangalore - came to Bombay in search of work, they were like fish out of water. And that could be said for a lot of South Indians, who didn't know the language, ate dal & chawal, & wore lungi. This place was started by my grandfather as a way to help them. They would come here & feel happy to find people who ate and looked like them & spoke their language.'
Ask Ajit what the future holds for this hostel, that's also a premier shooting location for ads, magazines and films as it retains the Victorian era architecture with hints of Art deco and Portuguese elements. 'I don't think the next generation of Hebbars' will want to take over this business, they have their own aspirations. I was a banker before I took over the family business,' he says, adding, 'Things will take its own course and a place can't run forever. This building will also get old.'

'We used to go to the best restaurants in the world, and then he would come back and say, 'Okay, now, I need Indian food, where are we going to find Indian food?' She shared how any of his meals of the day have to be Indian, and South Indian in particular. From antique wooden artifacts, traditional showpieces, and unique collectibles sourced from travels around the world, the interior decor is an amalgamation of their travels and lived experiences. A larger-than-life black horse statue takes up space in the living room, complemented by lush green indoor plants, antique lamps, and an antique clock. The house also draws inspiration from South Indian culture, with ventilation and wooden panels that allow just the right amount of privacy while opening up the space to neighbours and guests. A grand dining hall features a large dinner table sitting underneath a chandelier, which throws off warm golden light.

Kishtwar cloudburst horror: Pilgrims were having langar en route to Machail Mata shrine when flash floods struck
Hundreds of pilgrims had gathered at the Jasnai nullah at Chasoti village for the last leg of the yatra to Machail Mata temple when tragedy struck on Thursday. The unsuspecting group was resting and having langar when a deadly cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar triggered flash floods and landslides, washing them away. At least 60 people lost their lives in this massive cloudburst led to flash floods, while over a hundred people have been injured. According to media reports, the Jasnai nullah at the Chasoti village is a key stop on the pilgrimage. Here, langar, a community kitchen, is set up for the pilgrims of the Hindu shrine. 'The deluge hit a community kitchen set up for the pilgrims where 100 to 150 pilgrims were having food,' an officer speaking to the Hindustan Times said. According to reports, the nullah is also a regular stop on the pilgrimage route to the Chandi Mata temple in Paddar, where over 1.3 lakh devotees have already visited since it began on July 25. On the fateful Thursday, the number of pilgrims was on a sharp rise because of the first Bhadon or Bhadoon Sankranti (August 15 or 16). According to the shrine's website, devotees from across Paddar were gathering outside the temple in Machail to offer prayers and seek blessings. When the cloudburst hit, many were either standing in the nullah or resting at the langar. Within seconds, the water level surged, sweeping away numerous devotees, locals said. 'We stopped at a Maggi shop. People told us to run (because of the cloudburst), but we stayed back, thinking it was safe here,' Nine-year-old Devanshi said. Within minutes, a large mass of mud collapsed over the shop. 'Mata saved us,' she recounted how her family members and villagers pulled her out of the debris. Sneha from Jammu said she had felt it was all over for her after being washed away and buried under a vehicle. 'As we reached our vehicles, we heard a loud bang and saw a cloudburst over the hill,' she recalled. In no time, a wall of mud, boulders, and trees swept them towards the Chenab River, trapping them. "My father managed to free himself first, then helped me out. I pulled my mother out from under an electric pole. She was barely conscious and badly injured,' she said. She said some villagers were washed away into the Chenab. 'Bodies lay everywhere. The entire hill had come down. Even the Thakur ji idol of Chittoo Mata Temple was washed away before our eyes.'
