Driver arrested over Dubai hit-and-run incident
The motorist ran over the victim on July 20 in the Hor Al Anz area of Deira, east Dubai, and fled the scene, said officers.
Within two days, a 33-year-old Indian driver was held in connection with the incident. It is also alleged that he took his car to a garage in a bid to have the damage repaired and hide any evidence of the collision.
Counsellor Salah Bu Farousha Al Felasi, senior advocate general and head of traffic prosecution, said the driver and the Pakistani garage owner have both been arrested and are currently under investigation. They were apprehended within 48 hours of the incident, Mr Al Felasi added.
'The victim sustained severe injuries and is receiving treatment in hospital. The driver didn't pay attention to the road and escaped the scene,' said in a statement.
The two suspects will be referred to the legal prosecutor soon, he added, and Dubai Police will ask for the toughest penalty. The authority didn't disclose any details about the victim.
A word of warning
Mr Al Felasi urged drivers to stay vigilant and follow traffic rules to prevent accidents.
'Don't escape a traffic accident scene, it is a serious offence,' he added. 'Drivers must report such incidents to the police within three hours, in line with the latest amendments to the traffic law as of March 29 this year.'
Drivers who flee the scene of traffic accidents can be jailed for up to one year and/or fined between Dh50,000 ($13,600) to Dh100,000.
'Any attempt to escape responsibility will be faced with strict legal action,' Mr Al Felasi added.

Dubai Police have successfully recovered a bag containing diamond jewellery worth Dh1.1 million ($300,000) after a merchant mistakenly picked up another passenger's luggage at the airport. The diamond merchant, a Dubai resident, was travelling to another Gulf country to take part in a trade exhibition. He was travelling with four bags of diamonds but one was mixed up and ended up with someone else. 'The merchant put the bags on the airport's scanner and [then] picked up the wrong bag by mistake,' the force said. "The bag was similar to one belonging to a passenger travelling to Bangladesh." The diamond dealer did not notice he had taken the wrong bag and found out only after arriving at his destination. 'The merchant was surprised when he opened the bag on arrival to see a pile of clothes," the police added. "He returned the bag quickly to Dubai and filed a case." Dubai Police used surveillance cameras at the airport to identify the passenger who had collected the dealer's bag. 'The Bangladeshi passenger took the merchant's bag by mistake thinking it was his because it was very similar,' they said. The authority managed to recover the diamonds with the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UAE embassy in Dhaka and authorities in Bangladesh. The merchant thanked Dubai Police for their work in helping to return the bag. 'There are no words to thank the force for their efforts to recover the bag and the jewellery,' he said. "Dubai Police are keen to spread happiness among society."

Indian woman found dead in Sharjah apartment laid to rest in Kerala
Athulya Shekar, the 30-year-old Indian woman who was found dead in her Sharjah apartment on July 19, was laid to rest in her hometown in Kollam district of Kerala on Wednesday afternoon, social workers from the Indian Association Sharjah confirmed to Khaleej Times. 'On the request of the family, a post-mortem was conducted, and the final rites were performed. Her body was repatriated to India on Monday night,' said the social worker. Athulya had been living in the UAE for the past few years with her husband, while her 10-year-old daughter was in India. Authorities had earlier confirmed that she died by suicide.
