Lulu says new memoir felt 'intense' as she opens up about going to therapy
The 76-year-old was discussing the importance of mental health support ahead of a sponsored walk for her new charitable fund, Lulu's Mental Health Trust.
She told the PA news agency: "I've just completed writing my memoir, or an autobiography, whatever you want to call it, and it's been fairly intense, because I am 76 and being in the public eye, there's a lot of things I have not divulged.
"There's a lot of things I didn't feel comfortable talking about because, as a human being, I've had trials, I've had tribulations, I've had issues."
Her new memoir, If Only You Knew, delves into her past and the singer, born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie and also known as Lulu Kennedy-Cairns, said it has felt "very cathartic".
"There are things you don't know, and I'm going to talk about them, and it's really in order to help, but it's been very cathartic", she said.
"It is in order to maybe help someone else who's had a similar issue and they haven't dealt with it, or don't know how to, and I felt very alone in my head all my life, because I think I've been brought up to keep a lot of things secretive and keep it to myself, but that was my mother's (era) age.
"Today, things are more open, and if it can help, if you can relate to someone, it doesn't make you feel so alone. So that's part of the reason for doing the book.
"The other part is, I'm 76, I might not last much longer, and I've got grandchildren, and it's all documented, but it's been very cathartic for me.
"In fact, I had to go into therapy because it's been so intense. When you've kept stuff down, they (emotions) lodge in you. They lodge in your body somewhere.
"And sometimes they can affect your physical health, definitely your mental health. But to try and get them (those feelings) to come up, it's been intense."
The music artist from Glasgow said she wanted to establish a mental health trust as she and her family have experienced their own mental health issues.
On Monday, in aid of the trust, Lulu walked from the east London location where she filmed To Sir, With Love and finished at the old Decca Studios, where she recorded Shout - the song that saw her storm into the UK charts 60 years ago.
She has so far raised more than £15,000 for the cause through people sponsoring her for the walk.
The singer performed at Glastonbury Festival last year and embarked on her sell-out Champagne for Lulu tour, which she said was her last.
Her memoir is due to be released on 25 September. She will embark on a UK book tour four days later.

'So if they come up with something that doesn't have to do with their whole kind of sermonising about how to save the world, then Netflix might be like, yes. 'I mean, to be brutally honest, what they've done is they've said, 'unless you have some juicy tea to spill on the royal family, or you get divorced and want to give us a documentary, probably not.' 'But if they have something juicy to say about the royal family, like the king sent me a potted plant, which turned out to be poison ivy, or that 'H my fox' just didn't hold me the way I wanted to, and so we've had to consciously uncouple, then maybe. 'That's basically it.' Esther claimed that the deal is the 'best of both worlds' and claims Netflix has been "clever in that sense.' She added: 'These people [the Sussexes] are a household name. They're annoying, but they're a household name. Ex-Ireland footballer shares free Oasis ticket hack after meeting Liam Gallagher
Former Republic of Ireland footballer Cillian Sheridan has revealed his brilliant Oasis ticket trick after claiming he successfully secured one for one of the band's gigs at Murrayfield in Scotland. The ex-Hoops forward, who currently turns out for Scottish Highland League side Brechin City, has revealed how he took a punt when he randomly encountered Liam Gallagher following a round of golf. The Cavan native bumped into the legendary Oasis frontman in the car park of Gleneagles Hotel, where the Rock 'n' Roll icon was residing during his Scottish visit. Rather than requesting a snap with the music legend, Sheridan had different plans and there was only one thing occupying his thoughts. Revealing his Masterplan on X, he posted: "Here's my hack to Oasis tickets. Go for a round of golf in the morning, on your way back to your car bump into Liam Gallagher at his hotel. Here's the important bit. DON'T ask for a photo, instead chance your arm and ask for a ticket! Not how I thought my day would pan out! Legend!" Sheridan managed to slip in at the eleventh hour and claims he caught one of the Edinburgh performances of the Oasis Live 25 tour, reports the Daily Record. British BMX trickster Kriss Kyle ‘puts mum and dad through hell' even before epic never-seen-before stunt with F1 car
KRISS KYLE admitted he put his parents 'through hell' - even before he decided to risk death by 'playing chicken with an F1 car'. Kyle had the crazy idea two years ago and teamed up with sponsors Red Bull to make 'Can He Hop It?' happen, with the company providing Sebastian Vettel's 2011 title-winning RB7 V12 model motor plus the precision timings, given to the rider by a beep in his ear. After seven months of training, much of it centred around strengthening his legs including looking like a 'nutcase' walking the dog in a weighted vest, the initial date had to be aborted due to strong winds. So a back-up date was set at Goodwood, where - despite still some significant wind - Kyle had a 30-minute window and one take to pull off his monumental feat on the custom-built one-off titanium and carbon fibre bike. Then unbeknownst to his parents, he spent a year illegally living in the Unit 23 Skatepark - with rats for housemates and sweets for meals. Kyle explained: 'It was like super, super scary being in there by yourself. 'It was like a horror movie. 'F***, the amount of s*** I'd hear in there. I hated it. 'I lived there for a year by myself. One night I remember a rat ran over me. No joke, it was the size of cat. And it has certainly given him - and his loved ones - some hair-raising moments through the years. Kyle, who has escaped relatively unscathed by only breaking his ankle, toes, ribs and thumb, added: 'It's my job to think of these crazy ideas that no one's done before. 'I skated in a floating skatepark 2,000ft in the air in a hot-air balloon and jumped out of a helicopter on to the top of the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai. 'I put my mum and dad through hell. I actually do. 'After the F1 car, my mum called me and was crying when I told her that I'd done it. 'When I'd done the skate park in the sky, she was crying then as well. I forgot to call her when I landed and she thought I was dead. 'I put my wife through hell as well. And I've got a 16-month-old son now as well.
