Hall of Fame horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas reportedly in hospice care
The Lukas family issued a statement Sunday that said the 89-year-old had been hospitalized with a severe infection and declined to go through the "aggressive treatment plan" doctors in Louisville, Ky., had outlined.
USA Today reported Monday that Lukas has returned to his home and is under hospice care to spend his remaining days with his wife, Laurie, and their extended family.
"Wayne is one of the greatest competitors and most important figures in Thoroughbred racing history," said Mike Anderson, president of Churchill Downs Racetrack. "He transcended the sport of horse racing and took the industry to new levels. The lasting impact of his character and wisdom -- from his acute horsemanship to his unmatched attention to detail -- will be truly missed. The enormity of this news is immense, and our prayers are with his family and friends around the world during this difficult time."
The horses trained by Lukas are now under the guidance of Sebastian "Bas" Nicholl via the succession plan of Lukas Enterprises Inc. Nicholl is the longtime assistant to Lukas.
Lukas-trained horses won 15 Triple Crown races, second only to Bob Baffert's 17. His horses posted 20 Breeders' Cup wins and he won the Eclipse Award as the country's top trainer four times.
Lukas was enshrined in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1999.
After college, he began his career as a high school teacher and basketball coach in Wisconsin, and he took a summer job working with quarter horses in South Dakota in 1968. Four years later, he moved to California to become a full-time trainer of quarter horses, and in 1977 at age 42, he got his first win as a thoroughbred trainer at Santa Anita.
As a throughbred trainer, he had 4,967 wins and his horses earned more than $301 million from 30,607 starts, according to statistics from Churchill Downs.
The final win of his career came when 4-year-old colt Tour Player won at Churchill Downs on June 12. His final Triple Crown victory was at the Preakness Stakes with Seize the Grey in 2024.
Other Triple Crown winners trained by Lukas include Tabasco Cat (1994), Thunder Gulch (1995) and Charismatic (1999). He won six consecutive Triple Crown races, starting with the 1994 Preakness Stakes and running through the 1996 Kentucky Derby.
Nicholl said he will carry the influence of Lukas with him.
"Wayne built a legacy that will never be matched," Nicholl said. "Every decision I make, every horse I saddle, I'll hear his voice in the back of my mind. This isn't about filling his shoes -- no one can -- it's about honoring everything that he's built."
While horse racing brought success at the highest level to Lukas, it also gave him his greatest tragedy.
In December 1993, his only son, Jeff, was at Santa Anita when Tabasco Cat got loose from his handlers. When 36-year-old Jeff Lukas tried to stop him, Tabasco Cat slammed into him, leaving the younger Lukas with a severe brain injury. He returned to work for his father the next summer but only for a short period of time.
Jeff Lukas died on March 24, 2016, at age 58.

In 2022, the NCAA used a sport-by-sport approach to allowing transgender athletes to participate, deferring to an individual sport's national governing organization, international federation or prior established International Olympic Committee criteria. Thomas competed under those guidelines, which allowed female transgender swimmers who had completed one year of hormone replacement therapy to compete. The NCAA changed its policy the day after Trump signed an executive order on February 5 that was intended to ban transgender athletes from competing in girls and women's sports. That ended its sport-by-sport practice in favor of a blanket policy that only allows athletes assigned female at birth to participate in women's sports.

Disgraced ex-NBA star sentenced to jail for two years after pleading guilty to $4million healthcare scam
Former NBA star Sebastian Telfair has been sentenced to six months in jail after failing to meet the terms of his supervised release in relation to a health fraud case. Back in 2021, Telfair was among a number of NBA stars who were arrested following a $4million health care scam done by defrauding the league's health insurance plan. Two years later, the former NBA star pleaded guilty to charges of fraud - which amounted to $350,000 from his own claims - and was sentenced to three years of probation. However, it has now emerged that Telfair has since failed to abide by the court-ordered community service and failed to report to his probation officer. According to Sportico, Telfair has now been ordered to report to prison on August 12th and will serve six months behind bars for his actions. The outlet claim that U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni told Telfair: 'You thumbed your nose at your probation officer and me over and over'. The outlet further claim that, in a hearing on Thursday, Telfair told officials that 'things' were 'stacked against' him claimed he sometimes gets 'stuck in the mud'. He later acknowledged that that he missed his appointments with the probation officer and offered an apology. However, judge Caproni was not convinced over Telfair's claims and insisted that he had done 'absolutely nothing' to help his case. Telfair, meanwhile, has a previous criminal record with two separate gun charges - with the most recent being in 2017 when Telfair was found with weapons and marijuana during a traffic stop in Brooklyn. The case went to trial and in 2019, he was found guilty of felonious weapons possession and sentenced to three years in prison. Telfair was initially tipped as one of the NBA's most exciting prospects when he broke into the league back in 2004 but things didn't turn out as expected for the Lincoln High graduate. After struggling during two years at Portland, he went on to become one of the league's notorious journeymen after also suiting up for the Clippers, Suns, Raptors, Timberwolves and more.

CHELSEA have dodged a Club World Cup storm by setting up camp in Florida this week. The Blues decided to upsticks and move to Miami last week despite playing their last 16 game being held in Charlotte, North Carolina. That is 729 miles away. 6 After beating Benfica they will return to Philadelphia on Friday for a quarter final date with Palmeiras - the team they beat to win the 2022 CWC. Chelsea spent almost a week in Philly playing two group games but have decided to stay down South and bask in the sunshine of South Beach. And just as well, where last week it was blistering hot sunshine and humidity making it 'almost impossible to train' as boss Enzo Maresca put it, this week it is thunderstorms. Travel to Philadelphia has been severely hampered by torrential downpours and lightning in the skies above. Several UK journalists heading to Philly in advance of the team encountered serious disruption and delays to their journeys. Planes were grounded for hours because it was too dangerous to fly. LOAN RANGERS While Maresca and his squad are working away in Florida, those left behind are not sure when they're needed at Cobham. A number of players coming back from loan and up for sale this summer were not named in Chelsea's Club World Cup squad. Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Djordje Petrovic and Joao Felix all came back from loans and were omitted from the 28-man list. Wesley Fofana, continuing to recover from injury, was also left behind. Club captain Habib Diarra is on the verge of joining Premier League new boys Sunderland, player of the Season Djordje Petrovic has been recalled from his loan and looks set to be sold by Chelsea, while star midfielder Andrey Santos is highly rated at Stamford Bridge and will be a part of their squad for next season. To make things worse, Chelsea have signed their best young defender in Mamadou Sarr, with top goalscorer Emmanuel Emegha to join the Blues in 2026 in transactions that are essentially the same as moving money from your savings account to your current account. The Spaniard was the cause of many frustrations at Stamford Bridge last season, but finished the campaign strongly and has started the Club World Cup brightly too. In fact, Based on the xG of shots on target faced, Robert Sánchez prevented more goals than any other goalkeeper in the Club World Cup group stage, with three conceded from a 5.35 xG on target according to Opta. However, being a good shot stopper isn't all it takes to be a world class number one these days, and it's with the ball at his feet he seems to cost Chelsea. Goals came courtesy of Darren Mitchell from the penalty spot and Jonathan Nyarko secured the win for the Blues, while winger Sofyan Filali picked up the Player of the Match award. TEEN SPIRIT Incoming teenager Estevao Willian will naturally attract plenty of interest when Chelsea face Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-final. But there is another familiar face who could be lining up against The Blues. Former West Ham midfielder Felipe Anderson has been with the Brazilian club since last year and will surely be keen to rekindle some London derby spirit. The midfielder was once even linked with a move to Chelsea, while playing for Lazio after leaving the London Stadium - though the deal never materialised.
