Jonny Evans was a Rolls Royce player who Manchester United should never have let go says former teammate

Jonny Evans said his goodbyes to Old Trafford on Sunday as his second spell with Manchester United drew to a close.
After eight years away from the club Evans made a surprise return in 2023 going on to lift the FA Cup a year later.
The 37-year-old clocked up 241 appearances for United following his debut in 2006, but one of his former Northern Ireland teammates says Evans should never have been allowed to leave the club the first time around.

Keith Gillespie, who also played for the Red Devils, called Evans "a Rolls Royce type of player" as he paid tribute to the big defender.
"He's been an incredible player, one of the greats for Northern Ireland without a shadow of a doubt," said Gillespie.
"He's had a great career and for me Manchester United should never have got rid of him when they did.
"It was great for him to come back in the latter stages of his career and come back to the club he loves and served so well.
"For Northern Ireland he barely put a foot wrong, he was a Rolls Royce type of player.
"Careers come to an end at some stage, but he can certainly go out on a high given the career he's had and the way he's conducted himself and the way he's performed for club and country."
Meanwhile, Gillespie added it is no surprise to him that Rangers are contemplating bringing Steven Davis back to the club as part of a new coaching set-up.
Former boss Steven Gerrard is believed to be a front runner for the vacant managerial position at Ibrox and reports suggest Davis could form part of his backroom team.
Gillespie though feels Michael O'Neill will not want to lose the former international captain from his own coaching panel.
"The knowledge Steven has and the career that he's had I could certainly see him in management but it's not as easy as that as you have to do that number 2 role first and learn the job," said Gillespie.
"I know he had a spell as caretaker at Rangers and I'm sure he enjoyed that, he's certainly young and hungry and he'll certainly want to do that.
"There is a difference if he just wants to be a coach or a number 2 or a manager, that's up to him. Certainly with his knowledge it's no surprise that Rangers are potentially looking at him.
"I know Michael wants to keep him in the Northern Ireland set-up and that's because of the experience he has and the way the younger player coming through will look up to someone like Steven Davis."

Selling Bruno Fernandes Will Cripple Manchester United

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - MAY 28: Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United speaks to the broadcaster ... More after the match between Manchester United and ASEAN All Stars at Bukit Jalil National Stadium on May 28, 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. (Photo by Annice Lyn/Manchester United via Getty Images) For Manchester United, selling Bruno Fernandes would be madness. He has been the club's best player since he signed five years ago, and although he is now 30 years old, dispensing of him now would be suicidal. The list of successful Manchester United transfers in the past decade is staggeringly small; in fact, only Fernandes has arrived at Old Trafford and elevated his game to new levels. That becomes even more remarkable when you look at how those who've left Old Trafford this season have performed. Scott McTominay has just been named Serie A player of the year, leading Napoli to the title. Marcus Rashford is back in the England team after excelling for Aston Villa. Even Antony is being singled out for praise by his club captain at Real Betis, Isco. So, for the club to be entertaining flogging, the one man who has bucked that trend is baffling. Sure, a fee well over $100 million for a player whose peak years are ahead of him is excellent value, but the vacuum it would create at a time when pillars of leadership are required would do untold damage. Fernandes' winning the club's Player of the Year award four years in a row is both a credit to his performances and an indictment of the weaknesses surrounding him. You'd be hard-pressed to name any other contender for the award since the Portuguese star has been at the club. His manager is not keen on the idea either. Asked by journalists about the possibility of his captain departing, Ruben Amorim said: 'I think he wants to stay. He is saying 'no' to a lot of things, but it shows that he wants to win, and he is really good and needs to be in the best league in the world. 'Of course, I am the manager, the coach, but sometimes it is the decision of the player, but of course, I talk with him, I explain things, and I just have that feeling. When you talk to someone, you have that feeling that he wants to stay. 'Of course, in a lot of games this season he was so frustrated, but he knows what we are doing. The feeling that I have every time I speak to him is he wants to continue for sure at Man Utd. But you never know.' HONG KONG, CHINA - MAY 30: Manchester United Head Coach / Manager Ruben Amorim talks to media during ... More the post match press conference after the match bewteen Manchester United and Hong Kong at Hong Kong Stadium on May 30, 2025 in Hong Kong, China. (Photo by Yu Chun Christopher Wong/Manchester United via Getty Images) Asked whether the club could afford to reject a reported $134 million bid from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, who are keen to sign the midfielder before the Club World Cup. His response was, 'Yes, [we can turn down a $134 million bid], we can find another way to earn money. ' Amorim's words did little to quell the murmurs within the media that Fernandes was pondering whether to make the switch. However, one journalist is convinced by the Manchester United manager's words: Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol. 'I think Bruno Fernandes is staying,' he said after the press conference. 'I just watched Ruben Amorim there and he would have been told by his media handlers that 'you're going to be asked about this story, it's a massive story - just play it with a straight bat and say he's a Manchester United player and he's got two years left on his contract, I'm not going to talk about media speculation.' 'He didn't do that, he came out and he gave us quite a lot. 'You could tell he's spoken to Bruno Fernandes and Fernandes has said to him, 'I've got this incredible offer, it's like I've won EuroMillions, £200m over three years. This is life-changing money boss but you know I'm not motivated by money. I love football, I love Manchester United'. 'I think he's sat down and spoken to Ruben Amorim and he's told him he is an integral part of the rebuild at Manchester United. I think he's happy to stay.' Solhekol pointed out that the Saudi Arabian club had a lot of reasons to try and force a move for Fernandes to happen. 'The clock is ticking for Al Hilal because they are playing in the Club World Cup,' he added. 'They don't have a head coach, they've been trying to sign (Cristiano) Ronaldo, they've been trying to sign Bruno Fernandes, they're trying to get Simone Inzaghi out of Inter. 'There is a lot going on at Al Hilal because they are flying the flag for Saudi Arabia at the Club World Cup. But looking at Ruben Amorim today I think it's pretty clear and final that Bruno Fernandes is going to stay.' Manchester United supporters will pray that's the case.

Liam Delap names surprise defender as toughest opponent - 'Everyone says Van Dijk'

Ipswich striker Liam Delap named Nottingham Forest center-back Murillo as the toughest center-back he has faced in his career. The 22-year-old, who has been mentioned as a possible summer target for Liverpool, has come up against Murillo twice this season, failing to score or assist in either of Ipswich's games against Forest. Advertisement Delap was asked to choose between Ruben Dias, William Saliba, Murillo and Van Dijk for the toughest center-back he has faced, and although he mentioned Van Dijk — who Delap also drew a blank against in two games this season — he ultimately plumped for Murillo, who has also been linked with the Reds. "I think everyone says Van Dijk and he's probably been one of the best centre-backs in the world," Delap told Sky Sports. "When I went and played against Murillo, I was really impressed with him. He's still young and he's so fast and strong. I really like what I've seen from him this season. I don't watch too much football or anything but I don't want to go with what everyone else says." A $40 million buyout clause in Delap's Ipswich contract became active once the Suffolk club's relegation from the Premier League was confirmed, and it is expected that there will be plenty of interest in the former Manchester City player this summer. Delap has scored 12 Premier League goals for Ipswich despite the team's struggles and there is little chance of him remaining at Portman Road next term. The Reds are interested in signing a new striker this summer, although it remains to be seen whether they plan to firm up any interest in Delap. Advertisement Arne Slot has relied on his wide players for many of Liverpool's goals, with Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez having managed just 11 Premier League goals between them. The anticipated sale of Nunez will help to raise funds for a new striker, with Liverpool expecting there to be a strong market for the Uruguayan after rejecting approaches from clubs in Saudi Arabia during the winter window. Murillo has been a top player for Nottingham Forest this season -Credit:MI News/NurPhoto One of the offers, from Al-Hilal, was reported to have been worth $93 million, and if the club can command a similar fee this summer, it could go some way to ensuring the Reds can replace Nunez with a top-class striker. Newcastle's Alexander Isak would be Liverpool's preferred target but he is likely to prove too expensive, while the Reds have also been linked with the likes of Julian Alvarez, Viktor Gyokeres, and Benjamin Sesko of Atletico Madrid, Sporting CP, and RB Leipzig respectively.

Prosecutor says suspect in Liverpool soccer parade ramming used vehicle as a weapon

Updated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] LONDON (AP) — The ramming suspect in Liverpool deliberately used his vehicle as a weapon when he plowed his car into a crowd of soccer fans celebrating their team's Premier League championship, a prosecutor said Friday. Paul Doyle, wearing a black suit, white shirt and gray tie, looked emotional and hung his head during his initial court appearance in Liverpool Magistrates' Court. Doyle, 53, is charged with dangerous driving and six serious assault charges alleging that he caused or tried to cause grievous bodily harm to the two children and four adults who suffered the worst wounds among the 79 people injured, prosecutor Philip Astbury said. 'He used his vehicle deliberately as a weapon to injure those individuals,' Astbury said. Doyle, who spoke only to confirm his name, address and birth date, did not enter a plea. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison if he is convicted. Doyle's case was transferred to Liverpool Crown Court, where a different judge scheduled an Aug. 14 hearing for him to enter pleas to the charges. His trial date was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 24 and was expected to last three to four weeks. Doyle's defense lawyer did not ask for bail and he was returned to jail. District Judge Paul Healey ordered that the victims' names not be published. The city had been celebrating Liverpool's record-tying 20th title when the Doyle allegedly turned down a street full of fans and joy quickly turned to tragedy. Police said they believed Doyle got past a road block by following an ambulance that was trying to reach a possible heart attack victim. Videos showed the car hit and toss a person wrapped in a red Liverpool flag into the air and then swerve into a sea of people packed on the side of the road. At least four people, including a child, had to be freed from beneath the vehicle when it came to a halt. The victims ranged in age from 9 to 78, police said. Seven people remained hospitalized Thursday. The suspect was believed to have acted alone and terrorism was not suspected, Merseyside Police said. They have not disclosed an alleged motive for the act.
