
Wetherspoon's boosted by April sunshine as investment grows
JD Wetherspoon expects a 'reasonable' outcome for the year after unseasonably warm weather helped the pub group offset higher costs at the start of the year.
The group told investors on Wednesday like-for-like sales were up 5.6 per cent over the 13 weeks to 27 April, though total sales were up by 5 per cent reflecting a 'small number' of pub disposals over the period.
Wetherspoon's has sold seven pubs since the star of the year, but opened two, leaving it with 795 venues in total.
Having previously revealed a target of 1,000, Wetherspoon's said it intends to open 'four or five' new pubs this financial year and 'approximately 10' in 2026.
But the group also spent £17million on seven freehold reversions, whereby Wetherspoon's buys pubs in which it was previously the tenant.
An additional seven pubs now operate under a franchise agreement, four of which opened during the last quarter, all operated by Haven Holiday Parks.
Chairman Tim Martin also noted fresh investment in new staff facilities across 520 pubs, with 49 completed in the current year, including staff rooms and changing rooms.
The group has lined up staff facility investment for approximately 270 more of its pubs in the future at a cost of around £100,000 per venue.
Martin also highlighted the group's growing product range, with the arrival of Jaipur traditional ale, Kronenbourg 1664 Biere and Poretti all proving popular additions to the bar.
As a result of this investment, Wetherspoon's expects to end its financial year with debt of £720million to £740million, with headroom of approximately £200million.
Martin added: 'Bearing in mind that recent trading has been helped by favourable weather, the company anticipates a reasonable outcome for the financial year, notwithstanding previously reported wage and tax increases of approximately £1.2million per week.'
JD Wetherspoon shares were down 0.5 per cent at 684.5p in early trading. They have added 12 per cent since the beginning of the year.
Robinhood UK lead analyst Dan Lane said: 'Sales are in a good place and there is a clear focus on getting the pub count up but also making sure these are quality sites that the UK public wants to go to.
'Slowly does it though, as the property footprint still sits slightly below the 800 mark, against the 1,000 the group has previously targeted.'
Lane added that the market has so far largely 'shrugged off' Wetherspoon's debt pile, while the group's near immunity from US tariff pressures 'has kept its interest despite inflationary pressures'.
He said: 'No news of price hikes today and Martin will be hoping to weather any further uptick in inflation before he's forced to erode the chain's main selling point with a lift to the price of a pint.
'If the Bank of England drops interest rates tomorrow, we might see even more attention paid to businesses like this, naturally shielded from tariff headlines and already reinvesting in themselves for the long term.'

An initial £20million of investment has been promised and a share issue will follow to help raise more funds. With the Light Blues in Champions League qualifying action on July 22/23 and 29/30, the summer rebuild must start soon. We looked at how Martin could transform Rangers, in particular by recruiting trusted former players. Gers chief Stewart acknowledged there is a lot of ground to be made up on Celtic in the league, but believes Martin has arrived early enough for them to make signings before the Euro qualifiers next month. Speaking in an interview with Rangers TV, he said: 'There is a lot of hard work to be done, just to be clear. I think there always is every pre-season for Rangers because the European qualifiers come so early, so let's not shy away from that. 'That said, we have got Russell in and the transfer window doesn't open for another ten days and the first team don't return for another two weeks, so actually you could look at it glass half full and say we have got him in well in advance of those two key events. 'But let's not kid ourselves, there is a lot of hard work to be done but I know Russell is determined to get stuck into that. 'The potential of Rangers, we know it is unfulfilled at the moment. 'This is a huge club and supporters, players, management and staff, we have all been frustrated at not having achieved the heights. He said that combining Martin's knowledge with Thelwell's contacts book should lead to positive results in the transfer market. Stewart said that they will pay close attention to the Scottish and English markets, as players there will have an understanding of the British game. But that won't stop them from scouting players further afield - the only condition being that they must ALREADY be suited to playing in Scotland, rather than trying to mould them into the finished product. He said: 'Having an understanding of the Scottish game I would say is a key factor because every league is unique and we can look at some of the fixtures that have to be played as part of the SPFL. 'Every ground has its nuances and every club has its nuances, so somebody that comes in with an understanding of that is a huge asset. 'Equally, when it comes to recruiting players having a knowledge of markets outside of Scotland and players outside of Scotland, and off-the-pitch talent outside of Scotland as well, is a huge advantage. The Govan club were taken over by an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises last Friday before new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially joined from Everton on Monday. Another key appointment for Gers was made on Friday when 39-year-old former Southampton boss Martin, who had a short loan spell as a player in Govan in 2018, was confirmed as manager. The appointment has not found universal favour among supporters but Stewart believes Martin fits the bill perfectly – albeit the former Scotland defender has to demonstrate that to his new bosses. Stewart, who started work in his role last December, said: 'Russell's appointment is the culmination of a series of steps we've been working on over the past few months since I joined Rangers. 'We started with the football review, which I spoke to the media about in January. This led to several insights and recommendations, including the need to modernise our operations and develop a clear footballing identity. 'Then the next step was to appoint a sporting director and Kevin, of course, was appointed in April and came into the building just this week. 'We also have been developing a clear football style and identity and that's work that's been going on behind the scenes. It's been led by Kevin and it's involved football people. 'We've now culminated in appointing Russell and in Russell we've got a head coach who aligns to the footballing style and identity that we've been developing. 'In addition to wanting a head coach who's going to excel in terms of the style that we're looking to play as a club, we also were looking for a head coach that's going to improve our culture, develop our squad and ultimately win matches. And Russell's been a standout candidate. 'This appointment is about building a winning team and a strong culture. 'Now, Russell's no stranger to our club, as you know, he's been a player here previously and we expect success and Russell knows that. We're really, really excited for his leadership and for him to get started.' Martin will be joined at Ibrox by assistant head coach Matt Gill and performance coach Rhys Owen. A new share issue at the club's general meeting on June 23 will raise £20million, the bulk of which will be going to the football department. Thelwell insisted that Martin will be involved in any new recruits. He said: 'When we talk about recruitment, clearly it's going to be a collaborative approach. 'I've never been in this role ever where I've signed a player for the first team that hasn't been supported by the head coach or the manager. So we'll talk a lot about how we want to play. 'We'll talk a lot about what profiles we think we need and what positions we think we need. 'And then between Russell and I, and the recruitment team, we'll sit down and identify players that we think can make us better very quickly. And then between us, we'll decide about what we do next. 'That's generally how I've worked and generally how we've discussed how it's going to work. And for me, that's probably been a good way of working so that we've got some clarity.'
