Oman hosts 7th Food Safety Conference from April 21
The three-day high level conference and discussion sessions will see a number of prominent local and international speakers and experts from several government and private agencies from across the world kick start discussions and debates on special topics on the efforts and challenges facing countries in their quest to ensure food safety and quality, according to Eng Yaqoub bin Khalfan al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Fisheries, Chairman of the Main Committee for Food Safety Week.
On the first day, speech on 'Addressing resilience of food systems globally — the indispensable transformation', will be organised while the key topic of 'Modernising food safety and quality control and oversight — Role of new technologies and Artificial Intelligence' will be discussed as part of the second session.
This session will review the role of modern technology in developing innovative solutions that enhance food safety and quality, including but not limited to Modern traceability systems, novel methods used to improve production, storage and distribution processes, as well as using smart sensing technologies that support rapid detection of contaminants
The third session on 'Food Fraud' will be dedicated to reviewing methods and approaches supporting efforts to ascertain authenticity of food products, inputs such as pesticides and processes, thus contributing to the protection of consumers' health and confidence in food products available for sale.
"Such efforts are also associated with the reduction of the rate of food loss and waste; and would contribute positively to national economies overall. This session will review food quality management processes and analytical methods used to verify food authenticity and to detect adulterated or counterfeit ingredients, including Mass Spectrometry-based techniques, Infrared spectroscopy (IR), Genetic analysis and sensory or organoleptic tests," said Dr Hussain, Director General at the Quality Assurance at the Ministry, adding, "Determining food authenticity is the process of verifying the validity and truthfulness of claims related to the characteristics or the source of food ingredients and products."
A large group of experts, academicians, think tanks and specialists in food safety, security and other areas of the food sector will join the experts from Oman over the three days brainstorming the challenges and other aspects of food safety, the MoAFWR informed.

Oman reviews food security gains at UN summit
Muscat – Oman presented its progress in food and nutrition security during a ministerial session of the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4), which concluded on Tuesday in the Ethiopian capital. Speaking at the session, H E Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, said Oman has recorded notable improvements in several food and nutrition indicators since the 2021 summit. He cited a suite of current and planned strategies aimed at boosting domestic production, diversifying supply chains, ensuring sustainable use of natural resources and tackling malnutrition. These include a national food security strategy, nutrition strategy and frameworks for climate change adaptation, environmental sustainability and preservation of genetic diversity in local animal species. Oman was ranked third in the Arab world and 35th globally in the 2022 Global Food Security Index and 54th in the 2024 Environmental Performance Index. According to the minister, these rankings reflect the country's commitment to sustainability, environmental protection and efficient natural resource management. H E Habsi added that Oman is one of only nine countries globally – and the second Arab state – to receive World Health Organization certification for eliminating artificial trans fats from food products. The measure is part of a broader government push to promote public health and preventive care. He also noted that water sustainability continues to be a national priority, with policies in place to protect available resources from external threats and manage consumption across all sectors while safeguarding environmental requirements.

Oman showcases food security progress at UN summit
ADDIS ABABA: The Sultanate of Oman has presented its progress in food and nutrition security indicators at the ministerial session of the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) in Ethiopia, highlighting advancements made since the 2021 Food Systems Summit. In his address, Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, stated that the Sultanate of Oman has achieved significant improvements across multiple food and nutrition security metrics. 'The ministry has launched several strategies — with others in development — to enhance domestic production, diversify supply chains, ensure sustainable use of natural resources and improve nutrition while combating malnutrition,' he said. 'Key initiatives include the Food Security Strategy, National Nutrition Strategy, National Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Strategy, Environment and Natural Resources Strategy and the Genetic Diversity Strategy for Local Livestock.' 550,600 vaccination doses for livestock in Al Dhahirah
DHANAK: The Directorate-General of Agricultural and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah Governorate provided 550,622 vaccination doses for livestock in the governorate during the vaccination season, which extended from September 1, 2024, to the end of June 2025. The move comes within the framework of the implementation of the National Livestock Vaccination Project, overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. Eng Mohammed bin Ali al Shandoudi, Director of the Animal Wealth Department at the Directorate-General of Agricultural and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah Governorate, said: 'The national project aims to protect livestock from epidemic and infectious diseases, reduce economic losses incurred by breeders, and improve the quality of animal production. Animal health is the foundation of the rural economy, which makes this project a fundamental pillar for achieving the sustainability of this vital sector in the Sultanate of Oman.' The Directorate-General of Agricultural and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah Governorate carried out 25 field camps during the vaccination period covering villages with high livestock density in the governorate's three wilayats of Ibri, Dhank and Yanqul. Specialised veterinary teams provided the vaccinations as well as awareness-raising guidance to livestock breeders on best practices in livestock health care. The vaccination operations focused on diseases that pose a major threat to livestock. The directorate explained that the doses were as follows: 202,030 doses for sheep, 338,457 doses for goats, 8,508 doses for cows, and 1,349 doses for camels. The number of breeders who benefited from these services reached 3,216, reflecting the project's widespread positive impact across the governorate. Data published by the Statistics and Information Department at the Directorate-General of Agricultural and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah Governorate indicate that the total livestock population in Al Dhahirah Governorate exceeds 310,000 heads of goats, cows and camels by the end of June 2025.
