The BBC 5live star told how he still speaks to his girls and wife as soon as he wakes up everyday, almost a year on since their deaths.
Speaking publicly for the first time, John explained that he did not want his loved ones to be defined by their deaths.
In an interview with Victoria Derbyshire for the BBC, he said: "From the moment I wake up, I say good morning to each of them.
"Sometimes I say out loud to Hannah and Louise, 'sorry I can't be with you, I'm with your mum at the moment'.
"As I close my eyes at night, I chat to them as well.
"They're very close to me all the time.
Kyle Clifford was handed a whole-life order for the three murders, the false imprisonment and rape of Louise, and possession of a crossbow and knife.

Naga Munchetty rakes in up to £56k payday with side-hustle outside of BBC salary
UNDER-FIRE Naga Munchetty raked in up to an extra £56,000 on top of her bumper BBC salary last year, new figures have disclosed. The BBC Breakfast favourite is one of the top 10 highest-earning stars at the organisation, taking home a £345,000 - £349,999 salary. 6 6 6 Last week, it was revealed Naga had been reprimanded over two incidents - including allegations she bullied a female staffer. Presenters are also allowed to pick extra earnings by performing after-dinner speeches, hosting Q&A sessions for firms, and handing out gongs at corporate bashes. Staff reveal the cash they pick up to BBC bosses and the amounts are published by the corporation under transparency rules. And the latest BBC External Events Register which covers June shows that Naga was paid between £5,000 and £10,000 for hosting a Veuve Cliquot awards ceremony in London on 13 June. Then on 16 June, she was paid up to £5,000 for hosting an event for an organisation called Stardust before picking up between £5,000 and £10,000 for being an interviewer for software firm NICE Systems on 25 June. She was paid around £1,000 to appear at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre in August, banked up to £10,000 a role at the Ethnicity Awards in October and was paid a similar amount by Nexus in November. The same month she was paid up to £10,000 for work with a charity. A BBC spokesperson said: 'We publish the external paid-for work of on-air journalists for transparency and every event is approved in line with our editorial guidelines.' The Sun has contacted Naga's rep for comment. Last week, The Sun exclusively revealed that Naga was hauled before BBC bosses over two incidents in three years. Naga, 50, was rapped over allegations that she had bullied a female junior staffer. As part of the bullying behaviour, the star is said to have falsely accused her of stealing, which led to a closed-door showdown. The source said: 'It was humiliating. There was no evidence, no apology. The woman left not long after, completely demoralised.' In a second incident, Naga is said to have used a crude slang term for a sex act during an off-air break on Radio 5 Live - before asking a colleague if they had done it. She was reprimanded by a senior producer but no formal action was taken. The allegations meant Naga - who co-hosts BBC Breakfast alongside Charlie Stayt - is suddenly at the centre of a toxicity row at the Beeb. Staff have likened the atmosphere at BBC Breakfast to The Hunger Games, with editor Richard Frediani now on extended leave. Meanwhile, we have since revealed that BBC Breakfast bosses apologised to Spice Girl Geri Horner over a toe-curling interview with Naga and Charlie. The singer was left shocked by the sofa clash, in which Naga asked: 'Do you not like being interviewed?' After her appearance, Geri, 52, allegedly said she did not want to appear on the show opposite the pair ever again. A source said: 'Everyone noticed the interview was becoming quite awkward and then when Geri referenced Naga 's life directly things got really frosty. "Geri isn't used to that kind of approach and felt ambushed, it unnerved her. 'A few people apologised afterwards for Naga being a cow to her and then Geri made it clear she didn't want to be interviewed by them again in future.' 6 6 6
