Throughout the NBA history, a lot of big men have gotten their due for changing the game. Guys like Bill Russell, who anchored the game through the defense in the 1960s and legends like Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who basically scored at will around the rim. However, Tom Chambers was never put in that category, as he remains one of the most underappreciated big men of his era.
Moreover, Chamber was such a self-sufficient scorer for his former teammate Kevin Johnson, who, in many ways, served as a forerunner to modern-day greats like Kevin Durant and Dirk Nowitzki.
Johnson held massive praise for Chambers
Johnson witnessed Chambers at his most versatile. When Chambers arrived in Phoenix in 1988, both he and Johnson earned All-NBA Second Team honors by averaging 25.7 and 20.4 points per game, respectively. This duo not only made the franchise win 55 games in their first season together but also led them to the Western Conference finals. Furthermore, in the following years, both players maintained their All-NBA Second Team statuses.
Even when Charles Barkley took command of the Suns, Chambers willingly embraced a role off the bench and adapted his game even when his minutes were reduced to just about 23 per game, shooting at a career-high 39.3 percent from the three-point line as Phoenix reached the championship round.
"You know, people talk about Kevin Durant, who is a great player. Dirk Nowitzki? Some really-really good players. But Tom was the first of that type," Johnson said with a lot of confidence.
"You know, 6'10", 6'11" can run up and down the court, can shoot, athletic, can pass and can play defense when he wanted to," he pointed out.Durant and Nowitzki added more finesse
What stood out most to Johnson wasn't just Chambers' ability to embrace new roles but his unique skill set, particularly for a big man of that era. Chambers could create space to shoot inside the paint, beat defenders off the dribble and knock down pull-up jumpers, skills that were rare among centers of his time and were even frowned upon as traditional big men of that era needed to operate in the paint.
If he had played in the post-2000s, Chambers would probably have gotten more respect, as his game was way ahead of his time, so he can be considered a unicorn like Dirk and KD were.
Thus, it's not that Chambers lacked impact during his era; his playing style never quite captured the imagination of an entire generation. So, while those who witnessed his great play on the court truly appreciated him wholeheartedly, he never became a media darling. By contrast, KD's smooth jumper and Dirk's iconic one-legged fadeaway added a sense of finesse and spectacle, which solidified their fame and particular moves. Social media played its part here, too.
Nevertheless, at least for his former partner in crime - Johnson, Chambers made a special place through his dedicated work rate and hard work. So, while modern-day fans might never truly understand the kind of dominance that Chambers held in the league for a brief amount of time, those who witnessed him beast-play on both ends of the court knew just how talented he was. This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 19, 2025, where it first appeared.

Watch: Chet Holmgren posts offseason workout video

As the summer temperature rises, the NBA calendar slows down. Almost August, we've reached the driest part of the year. The league has gone on vacation. All the major offseason moves have been made, with most front offices happy with how their rosters look. The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to enjoy their NBA championship. Most of the partying has happened over the past month. With training camp two months away, they hope impressive continuity helps their chances of being a rare repeat winner next season. If Chet Holmgren can return to his pre-injury form, that'll be a huge plus. He was on his way to a likely first-time All-Star bid before he suffered a Nov. 2024 hip fracture that cost him three months. The 23-year-old figured out how to drive to the basket and create his offense. Pair that with special rim protection, and you have one of the best young centers. While Holmgren helped the Thunder win the Larry O'Brien trophy with great individual defense, you couldn't help but notice how much his scoring production dipped. His efficiency sank below the floor for a center. He couldn't buy an outside bucket. Now, with an offseason removed from his hip fracture, the Thunder hope Holmgren can return to the star trajectory he was on. The seven-footer posted on social media some of his offseason workouts. In the quick video, you can see him work on his handle and finish through contact. While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams received all the flowers for being 20-plus point scorers, Holmgren is not too far behind. Only injuries have limited his ascension. If he can have a healthy fourth season, he can show why those who doubted his contract extension were foolish to do so.

Royals, Seth Lugo finalize extension, taking trade deadline target off board: Source

The Kansas City Royals and right-hander Seth Lugo are in agreement on a multi-year extension, a league source confirmed on Sunday to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. When official, the move will take off the board one of the trade deadline's most desirable potential targets. Lugo, who signed a two-year deal with the Royals ahead of the 2024 season, with a $15 million player option for 2027, was primed to not only be one of the most prominent names thought to be available leading into Thursday's dealdine, but also potentially a top target over the winter free agency period. Instead, the extension will help him stick in Kansas City, where he's posted a 2.95 ERA over 19 starts this season. Advertisement 'We're a much better team with Seth Lugo here than not here,' Royals president J.J. Picollo said over the weekend. 'Whether that's just '25 or '26, if you move a guy like Seth Lugo, you better be really sure that you're getting something back that makes this team significantly better. You take a guy like that out of your rotation, you're not the same team.' Lugo made his first All-Star team at 34 years old, finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting last year and anchored a rotation that paved the way for Kansas City's first playoff appearance since the club's World Series-winning season of 2015. He posted a 3.00 ERA across 206 2/3 innings, and he made a pair of solid starts in October. During that same discussion with reporters, Picollo hinted at a potential extension for Lugo. 'He knows what's going on,' Picollo said. 'I don't want to comment about extensions, but he knows our desire to have him in a Royals uniform, obviously, not just talking about his current contract. 'He knows our desires. But that's something that we internally have talked about, and I think it makes a lot of sense for us. When you sign guys to extensions, there's one thing that has to be prevalent. They need to want to be here, and they need to want to be a part of this. I feel pretty confident that Seth does, but we'll just see where that takes us.' As for the Royals, they won 86 games last season, blitzed past Baltimore in the Wild Card round and offered the New York Yankees a fight in the ALDS. They haven't recaptured that magic, though. Their rotation remains a strength, as the emergence of Kris Bubic and Noah Cameron have compensated for Cole Ragans' injury-riddled campaign. Keeping Lugo long-term helps ensure it continues to be a strength, even as the 52-54 Royals flounder between contention, having just put Bubic on the IL. That came a day after Jac Caglianone landed on the IL as well. Prior to the move, Lugo ranked No. 7 on The Athletic's trade deadline Big Board.

Dream end Lynx's 14-game home winning streak with 90-86 win, Griner scores season-high 22

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Brittney Griner scored a season-high 22 points and the hot-shooting Atlanta Dream handed the Minnesota Lynx their first loss in 15 home games this season 90-86 on Sunday night. The Lynx trailed 83-70 with three minutes to go but pulled within three on Napheesa Collier's basket with 11.3 seconds left. Jordin Canada's free throw at 7 seconds iced it. Atlanta made its first six shots of the fourth quarter before a block by Collier and then made three more in a row. Collier had 13 points in the final period. Canada had 18 points for the Dream (15-10) and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Allisha Gray both added 12. Collier scored 32 points on 14-of-18 shooting to go with eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks to lead the Lynx (22-5). Alanna Smith added 12 points, Courtney Williams 11 and Natisha Hiedeman 10. The Lynx franchise-record home winning streak was the fourth-longest in WNBA history. Atlanta was 5-of-20 shooting in the third quarter when Minnesota cut a 14-point halftime deficit to as little as three. But in the other three quarters the Dream shot 29 of 45 (71%). The Lynx shot 56% but after Collier it was 48%. They were also outscored by nine at the foul line. The Lynx end a five-game homestand on Wednesday when the defending champion New York Liberty visit for the first meeting of the season between the two WNBA finalist from last season. ___ AP WNBA:
