The teachers I worked with often spoke about leaving to "work private" - as a nanny - or retraining. I have not been in the sector for years, but constantly receive texts, emails and calls from recruiters.

Having more permanent staff is better for children who can develop attachments and be cared for by people who know them and their idiosyncrasies.
More importantly, centre managers and educators get to know each other, develop and understand child safe policies and may be better at picking up on suspicious behaviour.
To be clear, trusted people do abuse children. We know that perpetrators will groom parents and communities, earning the trust to get away with abuse. Convicted paedophile and Brisbane educator Ashley Paul Griffith was invited into his victims' homes.
I am just suggesting that a casualised workforce is not an environment that prioritises child safety.
Permanent and experienced staff may be more likely to question unsafe practices, raise concerns about another educator's unusual behaviour or notice a child is acting out of character. It is easier to track offenders.
If you notice lots of unfamiliar faces at pick-up or drop-off, I would start asking questions.
More than once, I found myself alone with kids in a room out of sight of educators while working as a trainee at one centre.
There was a small room off the main area with dress-up clothes and books, and the toddlers liked to drag me in there. Sometimes they would even shut the door behind them.
This is obviously a massive red flag. Children should be well supervised, ideally not left alone with only one educator.

It might not smell great, but nappy changes can be done in the public space. Toilets (for children, not staff), don't need doors, or frankly even walls. Big glass windows that let you see inside and out are great.
Can children (and educators) hide under forts or tunnels, or behind playground equipment?
There are some practicalities that are hard to address. Babies will probably need a quiet and dark room to sleep (and they need their sleep). You cannot have two teachers leave seven children to put one baby down.
Perhaps we can consider CCTV in areas like this, or even the entire premises. There are issues around the privacy of children and staff, but when weighing it against child safety, I think it is worth discussing.
Many parents feel guilty enough for leaving their children in care, but in a modern world, it is a necessary sacrifice to keep a roof over their heads. Research also shows disadvantaged children benefit from being in high-quality childcare (but poor quality care leads to deficits in language and cognitive function).
I encourage parents to ask questions like: How often are strangers looking after my baby? Are there any places for a predator to, literally, hide? But if you don't like the answer, there may not be much you can do.
Finding another centre can actually be impossible in some areas, and good ones often have long waitlists.
Nannies, au pairs and babysitters are expensive and subject to far less supervision or scrutiny than educators in a centre.

Man accused of murdering underworld figure Bilal Hamze allegedly owed $270k for alleged killing
A man accused of killing an underworld figure and conspiring to murder his brother was allegedly owed more than $200,000 for the jobs and 'bragged' about how well he'd driven a stolen getaway car away from the murder scene, a court has heard. Samuel Rokomaqisa, 35, is standing trial accused of the alleged murder of Bilal Hamze and conspiring to murder Bilal's brother, Ibrahem. He's also accused of the aggravated assault of an elderly man. The prosecution delivered their opening submissions on Monday afternoon, where Crown prosecutor Kate Ratcliffe alleged Mr Rokomaqisa was involved in an enterprise with others to murder Ibrahem Hamze 'as an act of retaliation' by the Alameddine family — an organised criminal network — over a three-week period between July and August in 2021. He was also allegedly in the car in which 10 shots were fired at Bilal Hamze in June 2021. The court was told how Bilal had been dining at the Kid Kyoto restaurant in the heart of Sydney's CBD with a sex worker on the evening of June 17, 2021. A black Audi with imitation plates was spotted circling the area, with Bilal and the sex worker passing by the car after they left the restaurant. A total of 10 shots were fired at Bilal after the pair walked behind the car, with CCTV to show he and the sex worker 'running for their lives', Crown prosecutor Kate Ratcliffe told the court. Dashcam footage from a taxi, shown to the court, appeared to capture a pistol hanging out the front passenger side of the Audi as the events unfolded. '(The sex worker) screamed for help, she called an ambulance … but she soon hung up, being too distressed to talk,' Ms Ratcliffe told the court. Bilal later died in hospital, while the stolen car was found burned out in Northwood. Mr Rokomisqa has entered not guilty pleas to all charges and has denied any involvement in the crimes and to having any links with the Alameddine family. 'That was me, that is what we do': Alleged crim's bragging Mr Rokomaqisa allegedly showed a man, who can only be known as Witness A, news footage of Bilal's murder in the aftermath. 'Witness A will tell you … that when (Mr Rokomaqisa) showed him this news footage … he said to Witness A 'That was me, that is what we do with the cars',' Ms Ratcliffe said. 'Witness A, I anticipate, will also tell you that the accused … because of what he had done for the Alameddine family, he was accepted by them.' Ms Ratcliffe argued the words 'that was me' related to Mr Rokomisqa's alleged involvement in Bilal's murder, while the reference to cars related to the use of cars in criminal offences including murder. The court was told the stolen car was allegedly apart of a criminal scheme across Sydney to affix cars with imitation plates, move the vehicles around between garages, and burn them out when they're done using them. Mr Rokomisqa had also allegedly played a news clip about Bilal's murder to another witness, telling him he was the driver. 'Witness C recalled the accused bragged about being a good driver and how he got away,' Ms Ratcliffe said. ' … The accused said to him he was on a payroll and was paid to be the driver of hits.' Mr Rokomisqa was allegedly heard saying he was linked to 'the shooting and s**t' after a TV segment about the news in prison, and that he was in there together with 'all the Alameddine boys', Ms Ratcliffe told the court. '(I'm) f**king set here lad, they full transferred all the boys…all the Alameddine boys, we're all here together,' Mr Rokomisqa allegedly said while in prison. He also allegedly said he was 'the king now' while in jail, and that he'd been asked whether he was the one 'who knocked Bilal Hamze'. 'Unexplained wealth' Mr Rokomisqa's 'unexplained wealth' is also set to be probed during the trial, with bank records to show unexplained transactions over the relevant period. 'The accused was not earning money through legitimate avenues, and any unexplained wealth was (related to) his involvement in criminal activities on behalf of the Alameddine organised crime network,' Ms Ratcliffe told the court. He had allegedly told his former partner he was owed some $270,000 for the alleged crimes. 'The accused sent her a message (in September) … saying I'm owed $70,000 from just four weeks back, plus another $200,000 for the other thing,' Ms Ratcliffe said. Ms Ratcliffe submitted the 'thing' referred to Bilal Hamze's murder, while the $70,000 was to do with acts relating to the conspiracy to murder his brother Ibrahem. The following day, Mr Rokomisqa was allegedly heard saying 'Bro didn't I prove something to everyone with that job in the city?', which the Crown argued was in reference to Bilal's murder. He had also allegedly told Witness B he was waiting for 'just some c*** to come out' when she asked why he 'kept disappearing' around August 2021. 'The Crown case is that this was a reference to the surveillance of Ibrahem Hamze's unit block, and them waiting in the various cars during their surveillance for Ibrahem Hamze to come out so they could complete the agreement to kill him,' Ms Ratcliffe told the court. Finally, Mr Rokomisqa is accused of using a gun to threaten an elderly man into giving he and another his car after they got a flat tire during a police chase on August 14, 2021. He had allegedly been surveilling Ibrahem Hamze's home before a police chase was launched, later telling his former partner he 'had copped a chase and that they had to dump a car that they had stolen from an old person'. The King's School headmaster extends leave amid student incident probe
The headmaster of one of Sydney's most prestigious boys schools has taken leave after he allegedly clipped a student on the back of a head. In a message to staff and parents on Friday, the King's School headmaster Tony George said he had decided to extend his leave from the 193-year boy's school while the incident is investigated, The Australian reported. 'I want to make it clear that we recognise there needs to be zero tolerance when it comes to strict, enforceable working-with-children checks. 'It's one of the reasons why we'll be introducing legislation to stop what we perceive to be a loophole that allows someone to access a working-with-children check after it has been denied. There needs to be a one strike policy,' Mr Minns said. 'We're also trialling CCTV in major centres. 'I recognise there's widespread community concern about this. Changes are required and needed. We will implement them in parliament and beyond.' On Thursday, the Australian Federal Police revealed a Sydney man had been charged with producing child abuse material of 10 victims, the oldest being just six years old. The alleged offending is linked to his employment at six different out-of-school-hours (OOSH) care services in North Sydney and the Sydney CBD between April 2021 and May 2024. The man has since been identified as David William James, 26, a former student of elite Knox Grammar. Mr James was also a probationary constable with NSW Police from December 2021 to September 2022 and, after failing to complete his probation, continued in a civilian role until he resigned in May 2023, NSW Police said in a statement. Some of the alleged offending allegedly occurred while Mr James was training to be a NSW Police officer. Mr James was removed from the police force over his failure to tell NSW Police he was simultaneously working in child care. Documents seen by NewsWire reveal police will allege Mr James filmed young boys while they used the bathroom and masturbated in front of children, among other acts. The families of alleged victims identified from the material have been notified, and support has been offered and provided by NSW Health. Letters were sent to other families who had a child enrolled at one of the six Sydney care services where Mr James had been employed and evidence of alleged offending had been identified. A further 52 OOSH care facilities and other providers that employed Mr James have been identified and contacted, though police said there was no evidence to suggest any alleged offending took place at these facilities. Urgent childcare reforms passed the lower house of parliament in Canberra this week. The Bill would give the federal government power to cut off funding to childcare centres that do not meet the National Quality Standards for safety and quality. The reforms were expedited after Melbourne childcare worker Joshua Dale Brown was charged with more than 70 offences. He is yet to enter any pleas and remains before the courts. Parents and carers of 2000 children were asked by police to get their kids tested for sexually transmitted infections in relation to Mr Brown's case.
