Days after he sought action against online betting apps, AAP leader held for gambling
Days after he submitted a representation to the district police seeking action against online gaming and betting apps, the district youth president of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Panchmahal of Gujarat was arrested, along with six others, by the Local Crime Branch on Monday in an alleged case of gambling. According to Panchmahal police, the AAP leader, Ashish Kamdar, and six others were arrested during a raid at a house in Vaijnath Society of Godhra, while gambling. Panchmahal district LCB said in a statement, 'After a tip-off from a local source, the house was raided and seven persons were caught red-handed while gambling… A cash of Rs 98,700 was recovered from the accused along with a sum of Rs 11,300 that had already been placed in the bet during the session… Three mobile phones and playing cards were also recovered.' The other accused have been identified as Jigar Shah, Dharmendra Gosai, Ashwin Goswami, Vijay Patel, Mahesh Patel and Vikram Vanzara — all residents of Godhra. After getting bail in the case, Kamdar on Monday took to Facebook and criticised his 'detractors' within the AAP for not standing by him in the 'false case' filed against him. Kamdar, in the video message, said, 'The truth will come out during the trial in the court… A handful people in the AAP in Panchmahal as well as the BJP have passed a judgment and tried to malign my image as if I have committed some heinous crime. This false case against me is a usual mechanism of the ruling party to suppress voices.' On August 14, Kamdar had submitted a representation to the district police, seeking immediate action against online gaming and mobile betting apps, stating that the apps were making youth victims of the 'greed of the mobile app owners'. Gujarat AAP chief spokesperson Karan Barot said, 'We have learnt about Kamdar's arrest on Monday evening. He is the Panchmahal District Youth President of the party… We are awaiting instructions from the party level on the further steps in the case.'

Following recovery of explosives in Odisya, police suspect Maoist-miners nexus
Agency: Bhubaneswar/Phulbani, Aug 18 (PTI) Following the recent recovery of over 9 tons of explosives and 4,000 detonators from Kandhamal district, the Odisha Police on Monday said it was suspecting a nexus between the Maoist groups and mining companies. Additional Director General (ADG), Anti-Naxal Operation, Sanjeev Panda said the explosives recovered from Tumudibandha area on Saturday night resemble another dump of such materials from a Maoist camp in Gumma Reserve Forest last month, where 600 detonators of the same brand were recovered. 'We strongly suspect that the explosives being procured for mining explosion activities are getting diverted to the Maoists. There appears to be a nexus between them, and the police have been investigating the matter," the ADG said. The materials were stored unlawfully and may have originated from commercial mining firms operating in the region, he said. A report from Phulbani said that Tumudibandha police seized explosive materials including 4000 detonators, 276 kg of gelatin sticks, 100 kg of apex buster, 43 packets of wire and batteries. The police also seized two vehicles, Rs 4 lakh in cash and six mobile sets. Three people were arrested in this connection, said SDPO of Balliguda Ramendra Prasad. The explosive materials were seized while conducting a check at Rampur Square on the night of Independence Day, he said. Earlier this year, Maoists allegedly stole a large cache of explosives from a stone quarry in Sundargarh district. Joint combing operations by Odisha and Jharkhand forces and CRPF later recovered the stolen material from the Saranda forest in the neighboring state. The investigation is ongoing, with police examining procurement records and supply chains linked to mining operations in Kandhamal and surrounding districts, police said.
