Canada's Masse finishes fourth in 100m backstroke at world swimming championships
The Canadian swimming star finished fourth in the women's 100-metre backstroke final Tuesday, narrowly missing the podium in an event she's owned in the past.
Masse, a five-time Olympic medallist from LaSalle, Ont., touched the wall in 58.42 seconds — just 0.27 behind American Katharine Berkoff, who took bronze. Australia's Kaylee McKeown won gold in a championship-record 57.16, followed by American Regan Smith (57.35).
It was the same 1-2-3 podium as the Paris Olympics last summer, where Masse also placed fourth.
The two-time world champion said she entered the meet with fewer races under her belt than in previous seasons.
'I really can't complain and I have to keep things in perspective,' said the 29-year-old Canadian. 'To be fourth in the world and still be up there, competitive with the top and with those girls who I know are incredible swimmers, it's something that I'm really proud of.'
Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., placed seventh in 59.59 seconds.
Ilya Kharun put himself in position to reach the podium in the men's 200-metre butterfly.
The 20-year-old from Montreal advanced to Wednesday's final with the fifth-fastest semifinal time, clocking of 1:54.43.
Kharun won bronze in the event at the Paris Olympics with a Canadian-record time of 1:52.80.
'I can definitely go a lot quicker,' he said. 'My plan going into tonight was just to make it into the final.
'I hadn't really pushed myself until that final 50. It was all right, I've just got to be quicker (Wednesday).'
He rebounded after narrowly missing the 50-mete butterfly final earlier in the meet, placing ninth — just 0.01 seconds shy of qualifying.
'I was really mad at myself and just mad at everything,' Kharun said. 'But I just had to turn it around and think of it as more experience.'
Canada has won four medals at the world aquatics championships, including two gold medals from 18-year-old Summer McIntosh.
The Toronto swimmer will be back in action Wednesday in the women's 200-metre butterfly. She's won gold in the 400 freestyle and 200 individual medley so far, and is aiming for five individual titles at the eight-day meet.
Legendary U.S. Olympian Michael Phelps is the only swimmer to have won five individual gold medals at a world championships.

An extremely explosive athlete who plays bigger than his 5'11" frame would suggest, Moore is expected to be among quarterback Dante Moore's top targets this fall. Other true freshman wide receivers on the list include Florida State's Jayvan Boggs and Florida's Dallas Wilson. On3's Charles Power said this about Moore: "If any wide receiver could make an impact similar to what we saw from Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Williams last fall, it's Dakorien Moore. The former Five-Star Plus+ prospect was the clear top wide receiver prospect in the 2025 cycle, pairing elite speed and playmaking ability with outstanding ball skills. Moore has done nothing to slow down the hype since arriving in Eugene. He made big plays in the Ducks' spring game and should be in line for significant targets this fall." Being compared to Williams and Smith is certainly high praise for Moore, but he has all the talent and will have the opportunities this season to prove he belongs in that conversation. Real American Freestyle announces apparel partnership with Takedown, talks with Gable Steveson
Real American Freestyle wrestling announced a partnership with Takedown apparel on Tuesday and said it is in talks with Gable Steveson, one of Takedown's most prominent endorsers, about a possible rematch with Wyatt Hendrickson. Hendrickson, who stunned Steveson to win the 285-pound national title at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in March, will headline Real American Freestyle's inaugural event Aug. 30 in Cleveland. Hendrickson's victory over Minnesota's Steveson, an Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo, drew national attention beyond the sport. The Oklahoma State wrestler's dramatic late takedown in the final gave him the 5-4 win, closed out a 27-0 season and ended Steveson's win streak at 70 matches. Steveson already has a line of apparel with Takedown — one of many reasons Chad Bronstein, RAF's co-founder and CEO, believes Steveson would be a natural fit. 'There's no signed contract, but we've been in conversation,' he said. Hulk Hogan, Real American Freestyle's honorary commissioner who died July 24, told The Associated Press in April the league was in talks with Hendrickson. It signed him a little more than a month later. The partnership with Takedown is RAF's first official apparel collection. It will include looks worn by athletes in and out of competition. Bronstein said the partnership is a step toward building a professional freestyle wrestling ecosystem. The line will deliver a new revenue stream for competitors beyond live events. 'I think we're going to do really well in the merch game,' he said. 'We're going to sell a lot of good apparel and just keep being edgy with it. We'll have street wear and then the sports wear. So you'll have the typical, but we also are developing a street wear line too.' Takedown CEO and founder Dustin Kawa said it's a significant moment for his company. 'Both brands share a deep love for wrestling and a commitment to fighting for the sport, the athletes, and the community that raised us. Now is our time to make history – together,' he said.

Cade Klubnik, Caleb Downs among early favorites for college football's top awards
The race for college football's most prestigious awards is about to begin, and proven stars and rising sophomores are early frontrunners. From Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik to Ohio State's star tandem of Caleb Downs and Jeremiah Smith, here are six players positioned to add their name in the history books during the 2025-26 season: Fred Biletnikoff Award: Jeremiah Smith Few young receivers have generated as much hype as Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, who comes off a dominant freshman season. Smith led the Buckeyes with 1,315 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024, finishing ahead of first-round pick Emeka Egbuka. The No. 1 recruit in the 2024 class delivered for the Buckeyes throughout their national title run, connecting with quarterback Will Howard for 381 yards and five touchdowns in the postseason. At 6-foot-4 with excellent hands and elite route running capabilities, it's hard to keep the ball out of Smith's hands. Jim Thorpe Award: Caleb Downs Two years into his collegiate career, accolades are stacking up for Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. The preseason first-team AP All-American was an immediate standout for the Buckeyes after spending his freshman season at Alabama. Downs was named the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year after finishing the season with 82 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and six pass break-ups. He was critical to the championship run, consistently locking down threats in the passing and running games. He held tight end and eventual first-round draft pick Tyler Warren to four catches for 47 yards in Ohio State's 20-13 win over Penn State and picked off Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in the CFP semifinal. Chuck Bednarik Award: Dylan Stewart After a breakout freshman campaign, South Carolina's Dylan Stewart is poised to lead the Gamecocks' defense in 2025. Stewart earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team after recording 23 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a pass breakup. The edge rusher who can also drop into coverage put together one of the best freshman defensive campaigns in South Carolina since Jadeveon Clowney. Though Downs will likely make a strong case, the Bednarik Award has yet to be given to a safety in its 30 years of existence. Stewart is one of just seven sophomores on the watch list for the award. Doak Walker Award: Jeremiyah Love Love is widely considered the top returning running back after playing an integral role in Notre Dame's best season since 1988. The six-foot, 214-pound running back finished the season with 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns on 163 carries, averaging 70.3 yards per game, 8.5 yards per carry and at least one score in each of the first 13 games. As Notre Dame undergoes a quarterback shift in 2025, Love could see even more opportunities to carry the offense, putting the preseason AP All-American in prime position to take home the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back. Outland Trophy: Spencer Fano The Outland Trophy is awarded to the best interior lineman in college football. Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. earned the award in 2024, marking back-to-back Outland Trophy wins for the Longhorns after T'Vondre Sweat won in 2023. We expect the award to stay on the offensive side of the ball in 2025 and Utah's Spencer Fano is a player to watch. He led FBS offensive tackles in 2024 with a 92.7 PFF grade, allowing just two quarterback hits and one sack through 424 pass-block attempts. Fano held his opponents to zero sacks through the last 11 games of the season. The preseason AP All-American has shown versatility, lining up on the right and left sides, and seems a good bet to be a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft. Heisman Trophy: Cade Klubnik The most prestigious award in college football is likely to return to the hands of a quarterback in 2025. Arch Manning, Garrett Nussmeier and Cade Klubnik headline early Heisman conversations and possess the best odds heading into the season. Klubnik has the experience Manning lacks, the mobility Nussmeier strives for and enough consistency in the receiving room to hit the ground running in 2025. The Clemson quarterback comes off an impressive 2024-2025 campaign, completing 63.4% of passes for 3,639 yards, 36 touchdowns and six interceptions. A dual-threat, he added 463 yards and seven touchdowns on foot. His 36 touchdowns ranked behind only Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward, who were both selected in the 2025 NFL draft. Clemson landed at No. 4 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll. If Klubnik can measure up to high expectations, the Tigers could have their first Heisman winner since Trevor Lawrence.
