India's core industries output grows 0.5% in April, lowest in 8 months

The production of cement, coal, steel, electricity and natural gas recorded positive growth in April 2025.
The Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI) is a key economic indicator in India, measuring the combined and individual performance of eight core industries.
The eight core industries are coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity. The Eight Core Industries comprise 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).
The final growth rate of the Index of Eight Core Industries for January 2025 was observed at 5.1 per cent. The cumulative growth rate of ICI from April to March, 2024-25 is 4.5 per cent (provisional) as compared to the corresponding period of last year.
The summary of the Index of Eight Core Industries is given below:
Coal - Coal production (weight: 10.33 per cent) increased by 3.5 per cent in April 2025 over April 2024. Its cumulative index increased by 5.1 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Crude Oil - Crude Oil production (weight: 8.98 per cent) declined by 2.8 per cent in April 2025 over April 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 2.2 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Natural Gas - Natural Gas production (weight: 6.88 per cent) increased by 0.4 per cent in April 2025 over April 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 1.2 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Petroleum Refinery Products - Petroleum Refinery production (weight: 28.04 per cent) declined by 4.5 per cent in April 2025 over April, 2024. Its cumulative index increased by 2.8 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Fertilisers - Fertiliser production (weight: 2.63 per cent) declined by 4.2 per cent in April 2025 over April 2024. Its cumulative index increased by 2.9 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Steel - Steel production (weight: 17.92 per cent) increased by 3.0 per cent in April 2025 over April 2024. Its cumulative index increased by 6.9 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Cement - Cement production (weight: 5.37 per cent) increased by 6.7 per cent in April 2025 over April 2024. Its cumulative index increased by 6.3 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Electricity - Electricity generation (weight: 19.85 per cent) increased by 1.0 per cent in April 2025 over April 2024. Its cumulative index increased by 5.2 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, Head - Research and Outreach, ICRA Ltd, 'The performance of the core sector deteriorated significantly in April 2025, with the YoY growth slumping to an 8-month low of 0.5 per cent in the month from the upward revised 4.6 per cent in March 2025. The deceleration was broad-based, led by six of the eight sectors barring coal and natural gas.'
'Based on the tepid rise in the core sector and the performance of the other available high-frequency indicators, ICRA expects the IIP growth to moderate sharply to 1.0 per cent in April 2025. The healthy growth in non-oil exports may provide an upside, unless the same represents round-tripping of some imports,' Nayar added. (ANI)

AI171 crash: US attorney seeks probe data, eyes lawsuit against Boeing
Mike Andrews, the lead US attorney representing more than 65 families impacted by the Air India AI171 crash, has called for full transparency in the investigation. "We want to know the truth, we want transparency and exactly what happened," Andrews told news agency ANI. "These families want to know, and they deserve the respect to know what happened to their loved ones." A report by The Economic Times quoted Andrews as saying that if the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) findings point to technical faults as the cause of the crash, he would move US courts to pursue a product liability case against Boeing. 'We are placing formal requests with the Air India and AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) to release the details of the FDR, which will reveal a great deal about the accident,' he told The Economic Times. Andrews also met the lone survivor and his family, describing them as "humble and hardworking" people who are enduring unimaginable pain. He added that investigators are exploring multiple possible causes, including a malfunction in the throttle control system. "One question is whether or not moisture can affect the systems and cause a problem," he said. Anger over compensation delays The US attorney criticised the slow pace of compensation, calling it a 'bureaucratic process' that would not have existed under the leadership of the late Ratan Tata. "Even in the US, we know who Ratan Tata was," Andrews said. "We know about his work ethic and his humility. If he were here today, we don't believe victims and their families would be subjected to delayed payments." On July 26, Air India released an interim compensation of ₹25 lakh each to the families of 147 passengers and 19 victims on the ground. This amount will be adjusted against the final settlement later. Tata Group's memorial and support The Tata Group has also set up the "AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust" in memory of the victims. The Trust has pledged an ex gratia of ₹1 crore per deceased individual, while also funding the rebuilding of the damaged BJ Medical College Hostel and extending support to first responders and medical teams. On June 12, Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The accident killed 260 people — 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. Air India CEO on flight safety Following the tragedy, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson addressed frequent flyers through an email, saying their concerns about safety were 'understandable". He assured that the airline is strengthening checks, inspections, and training to ensure safer operations. India's aviation regulator, the DGCA, recently issued four show cause notices to Air India over repeated safety lapses, including issues with crew deployment, pilot rest rules, and training. DGCA records show 19 top-level safety findings in the past year across Air India Group airlines — 10 in Vistara, seven in Air India, and two in Air India Express. Other Indian carriers recorded none in this category. The regulator clarified that higher observations are 'normal' for larger airlines but stressed that immediate corrective action is required. Air India crash: What the preliminary report found The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AAIB) initial findings revealed that both fuel control switches had been moved to the 'cutoff' position, cutting supply to the engines shortly after take-off. The report found one pilot questioning the move, while the other denying making it. Wilson, in his note to customers, added, 'All our processes are backed by a comprehensive Safety Management System aligned with global standards and fully compliant with DGCA and ICAO guidelines.'

Dwarka Expressway, UER-II opening tomorrow: Noida to Delhi airport in just 20 minutes
Reaching Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport from Noida will now become much easier following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's inauguration of two major road projects: the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway on Sunday. PM Modi will inaugurate four of the five packages of UER-II along with phases three and four of the Dwarka Expressway on Sunday afternoon.(ANI) Together, these new stretches are expected to reduce travel time from Noida to IGI Airport to just 20 minutes, according to India Today. They will provide commuters from western Delhi and NCR suburbs a smoother journey and ease congestion on the city's busy Ring Road. Once completed, the projects will also help reduce traffic on inner roads, easing pressure on NH-48, NH-44, Ring Roads, and the Barapullah elevated corridor. The estimated construction cost of UER-II is ₹3,300 crore. Modi will inaugurate four of the five packages of UER-II, along with phases three and four of the Dwarka Expressway around 12.30pm on Sunday, news agency ANI reported. The ceremony will take place in Rohini, and the Prime Minister is expected to inspect both projects. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate packages three and four of Dwarka Expressway and four packages of Urban Extension Road-II connecting Mahipalpur near IGI airport with Alipur in North Delhi, linking it with NH-44. These two roads will significantly reduce congestion in and around Delhi and NCR,' a senior NHAI official said. More details on the new packages UER-II: The 75.71 km UER-II road has been developed in five packages at a cost of ₹6,445 crore, with 54.21 km in Delhi and 21.50 km in Haryana. Once operational, it will enable residents of Gurugram, west, and south Delhi to reach NH-44, Chandigarh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir faster, bypassing congestion at Dhaula Kuan and Delhi's ring roads. Dwarka Expressway details: Packages 3 and 4 of the Dwarka Expressway, 10.1 km in Delhi, include a 5.1 km tunnel connecting the road to IGI Airport, improving access to Gurugram. Packages 1 and 2, covering the Haryana section (29 km between Mahipalpur and Kherki Daula on NH-48), were inaugurated by the Prime Minister in March 2024. Future connectivity: Connecting UER-II to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, starting near Akshardham temple, will provide faster routes for traffic from Haryana and Rajasthan heading towards Dehradun. Another 65 km highway from Tronica City to the under-construction FNG Expressway has been approved. This highway will link five major expressways in the NCR: Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Noida-Greater Noida, DND-Faridabad, and Yamuna Expressways. Inauguration and preparations: The Dwarka Expressway tunnel has been cleaned and refurbished ahead of the inauguration. The Prime Minister is expected to inspect both projects, starting with the Dwarka Expressway and then proceeding via UER-II road towards Rohini. Sustainable construction efforts: Approximately 10 lakh metric tons of inert material recovered through biomining of legacy landfill waste in Delhi has been used in constructing UER-II, promoting sustainable infrastructure practices.
