World's largest Legoland set to open in Shanghai

Zawya20-06-2025
One of the star attractions at Legoland Shanghai, which officially opens on July 5, is likely to be a mini replica of the Shanghai waterfront and skyscrapers of the Lujiazui financial district, all built in the colourful plastic bricks.
The Shanghai resort, which will be the world's biggest Legoland so far and the first in China, features eight themed sections that will feel familiar to fans of Lego. They include Ninjago, Lego Friends and Monkie Kid lands, in which classic Lego pieces are brought to life and supersized - though not big enough to meet everyone's expectations.
"I thought it would be huge, but it turned out to be half of the scale I dreamed ... But the attractions are beyond my expectation," said Lyu Xiaole, a very grown-up seven-year-old whose family were among those able to get limited tickets for a pre-opening visit on Friday.
China's economy has been hit by weak consumer spending in recent years amid a prolonged property slump and high youth unemployment, but Legoland Shanghai will be counting on resilient domestic travel and "experience" spending which have remained strong.
Legoland Shanghai is operated by a joint venture between Merlin Entertainments, which runs Legoland parks around the world, and the Shanghai Jinshan District local government.
The replica of downtown Shanghai and the city's waterfront is housed in the "Miniland" building at the site, where skyscrapers face the colonial era splendour of buildings along Shanghai's famed Bund promenade.
The Miniland creations took 168,000 hours to complete, using more than 20 million bricks. "I think it's best to play Lego in Legoland because I have much less Lego at my place," said seven-year-old Shen Jieqi.
Lego, the Danish family-owned toymaker that produces the bricks, is a familiar name in China where it has more than 400 stores.
In Shanghai, Legoland will offer another leisure space in the city for those who can afford it. Tickets will start from 319 yuan ($44.46) in low season and up to 599 yuan on peak days.
"We came very early in the morning. The atmosphere in the park is very joyful. The staff are full of passion," said Huang Xuanhua, 44, who lives close by the resort in Shanghai's Jinshan district and visited on Friday. "It has been a joyful day." ($1 = 7.1756 Chinese yuan renminbi)

Michelle Yeoh sees ‘Ne Zha 2' movie as homage to Chinese mythology

For Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh, it is time for Hollywood to focus more on Asian mythological characters like the ones showcased in the Chinese film Ne Zha 2, which has become the highest-grossing animated film in history worldwide. "They're warriors and demigods,' Yeoh, who voices the role of Ne Zha's mom for the film's English dub, said. 'I guess it's like Zeus, you know, and Thor, but these are ours. And I think that's very important because when you learn about another culture's myths, you have a nice, deeper understanding, and it teaches you to embrace something that is different,' the Everything Everywhere All at Once actor added. Ne Zha 2, distributed by A24, follows the events of the first film, 1999's Ne Zha. In the new film, the souls of Nezha and Aobing work to regain their physical bodies and protect their families. The original film grossed over $700 million (Dh2.57 billion) worldwide. The English dubbed version of the fantasy film directed by Yu Yang and based on Xu Zhonglin's 16th-century novel called Investiture of the Gods, arrives in US theatres on Friday. The sequel, originally in Mandarin, made waves when it overtook Pixar's Inside Out 2 in February to become the highest-grossing animated film globally in history, according to data from ticketing platform Maoyan. Ne Zha 2 has amassed a total box office of 12.3 billion yuan ($1.69 billion) including pre-sales and overseas earnings, making it the eighth-highest grossing box office film globally in history. While Yeoh emphasises the cultural richness of the film, she wants audiences of all walks of life to understand that the most important thing is that it's 'a beautiful story.' 'I think we should stop seeing it as, 'Oh it's a Chinese film,'' she added. The Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actor recalled watching the movie for the first time and not being able to tear her eyes away from the screen. 'You're going up to the heavens. You're going down to the bottom of the seas. You see the dragons. You see all these kind of things, and just for that two hours - be transported,' Yeoh said.

Labubu maker Pop Mart seeks expansion to markets including Middle East amid record profit

Toy company Pop Mart is on track to meet its targeted revenue goal of 20 billion yuan ($2.78 billion) in 2025 and hitting '30 billion this year should also be quite easy', chief executive Wang Ning has said. He was speaking with analysts on Monday after Pop Mart announced record half-year results on Tuesday, with the makers of the ugly-cute Labubu doll reporting net profit soared nearly 400 per cent as demand for the toys surged, particularly in higher-margin overseas markets. Expansion in emerging markets in the Middle East, Central Europe and Central and South America was being explored. 'I think for overseas markets we're still very positive, and we also believe there's still very broad space for growth,' Mr Ning said, adding that sales from North America and Asia Pacific this year would together equal China sales in 2024. Pop Mart executives are also optimistic about opportunities for the firm's proprietary art toys, including Labubu doll, to star in animated films and theme park attractions. In the US, where Pop Mart currently has about 40 stores, Mr Ning said the company will begin a phase of relatively rapid store openings' over the next year or two, with 10 more US shops expected to open by the end of this year. Pop Mart's primary business is producing and selling collectible toys, many of them developed with artists and sold in 'blind boxes', packages consumers buy for around $10 to $20 without knowing exactly which iteration of the toy is inside. Labubu, a toothy-grinned member of 'The Monsters' series of toys designed by Kasing Lung, has become a favourite of celebrities including Rihanna and David Beckham and has sold out around the world. Until now most popular as a charm for handbags, Pop Mart says it will this week launch a mini version of Labubu that can be attached to phones. The firm is also exploring options in content and entertainment, saying it is optimistic about opportunities for Pop Mart characters to star in animated films and theme park attractions, though these are not expected to contribute a large amount of direct revenue in the short term. Net profit of 396.5 per cent and a 204.4 per cent jump in revenue exceeded numbers flagged in an earnings preview last month forecasting revenue growth of 200 per cent in the first half of 2025 and a recurring net profit increase of at least 350 per cent on the year. Shares in Pop Mart have risen more than 200 per cent year-to-date, making the Chinese toy company more valuable than traditional industry giants like Barbie-maker Mattel and Hello Kitty parent company Sanrio.
