India's Gen Z billionaires bored with business

THE family that ran India's largest luggage maker for more than half a century is packing it in, with control of Mumbai-based VIP Industries Ltd, passing to private equity.
'What do I do?' Dilip Piramal, the 75-year-old chairman, wondered aloud in a television interview after announcing the sale. 'The younger generation is not interested in management.'
Piramal isn't the only ageing businessperson to have run out of successors: 'Today among the scions of some of the most affluent families of India, someone is an artist, someone wants to be a sportsman, someone wants to run a small restaurant.
'There's nothing wrong in that. It's the modern trend, people want to do their own things.'
Two hundred years ago, that 'modern' trend among young people used to be enterprise.
That's when families like Piramal's began to spread out of the Marwar region in land-locked northern India to take advantage of British-controlled trading opportunities in the port cities of Bombay and Calcutta – now Mumbai and Kolkata.
Cotton, jute, and opium sold to China provided the seed capital to the Marwari business community for everything from textile mills to cement factories.
By the early 20th century, these emerging industrial empires were large enough to challenge the colonial masters and their commercial interests.
The likes of Ghanshyam Das Birla openly supported Mahatma Gandhi's campaign for independence, even as they outran rivals like Andrew Yule & Co.
The Birla House in Delhi, a prominent hub for the freedom movement, was also where Gandhi was assassinated.
As the sway of family firms continued after India's 1947 independence, it was believed that newer generations would always be available to take over the reins.
Below the surface, however, the link between ownership and management has been weakening for some time.
Piramal's daughter, Radhika, a Harvard University MBA, was the chief executive officer for a few years before quitting in 2017 and relocating with her spouse to London.
Her same-sex marriage is not legally recognised in India.
The luggage maker was back to being in the care of professional managers, a double-edged sword considering that a rival firm set up by a former managing director is now three-fifths bigger than VIP by market value.
The heirs of prominent business families – Millennial and Gen Z billionaires – are setting their own life goals.
It's the sensible thing to do. In a labour-surplus economy, access to capital through clan networks and strategic marital alliances was family-run firms' core advantage.
But via public markets and private equity, finance is now available to a much wider section of entrepreneurs. Risk-taking has been democratised.
That frees up younger members of business dynasties to try new things. Someone recently asked the singer-songwriter Ananya Birla on social media if she was from the family behind India's largest-selling cement brand.
She is indeed the great-great-granddaughter of Ghanshyam Das Birla.
But from financial inclusion among rural women to a recently launched beauty brand, the 31-year-old Oxford graduate has her own interests that are independent of the sprawling commodities behemoth led by her father.
Though they're from Tamil Nadu in southern India, and not Marwar in Rajasthan, it's the same for philanthropist Roshni Nadar Malhotra, the chair of HCL Technologies Ltd, a US$48bil outsourcing powerhouse founded by her dad.
He gifted her the family's controlling stake in March. Running the tech firm's day-to-day operations is someone else's job. Nadar is passionate about wildlife conservation, among other things.
Piramal is retaining 20% of VIP. But that's just a financial investment in a publicly traded security. He'll pare it down.
Owners of unlisted firms are proceeding more slowly.
A few months ago, the family behind Haldiram's, a 90-year-old Indian snacks brand, parted with a minority stake to Singapore's Temasek Holdings Pte and other global investors. Media reports put the firm's valuation at US$10bil.
A scenario where India's business elite is basically a bunch of rich financiers, living off accumulated wealth, doesn't appeal to everyone.
'What concerns me is that many in this generation are taking the easy way out, especially in the post-Covid world,' says billionaire Uday Kotak, who retired two years ago as managing director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, which he founded in the 1980s as a finance company.
'They claim to be managing family offices and investments, trading in the stock market, allocating funds to mutual funds, and treating it as a full-time job.'
But they are probably just smart to realise that they're sandwiched. On one hand, access to capital is no longer their abiding advantage.
On the other, real economic power is concentrating in fewer hands.
Viral Acharya, a former central bank deputy governor, has shown in his research that India's top five non-financial groups have expanded their share of total assets by eight percentage points in 30 years, whereas the next five business groups' sway has shrunk by roughly the same amount.
From cement, steel, autos, power, and paints to retail, telecom, media, finance, and aviation, a handful of powerful conglomerates are pouncing on every new opportunity.
No wonder the successors of tycoons like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani and
Sajjan Jindal are closely involved in management. Children from middling business families probably don't see the point of entering a new field only to see it being disrupted by a startup – or dominated by a bigger player.
Many more Indian assets will change hands as their family owners ultimately lose interest in tending to them.
In heading for the exit, Piramal, the luggage maker, has given a good indication of the direction of travel. — Bloomberg

THERE are strong echoes of Donald Trump's failed trade deal with China from his first term as US president in the framework agreement reached with the European Union (EU). Trump and EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen announced the deal for a 15% tariff on US imports of EU goods at the US leader's golf course in Scotland on Sunday. But more important than the 15% tariff rate was the apparent commitment by the EU to massively ramp up energy imports from the United States. The agreement calls for EU imports of US energy, which currently are mainly crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), of US$250bil a year for three years. This is a delusional level of imports that the EU has virtually no chance of meeting, and one that US producers would also struggle to supply. Massive challenge Even if the EU did manage somehow to boost its energy imports from the United States to the US$250bil a year mark, it would also prove massively disruptive for energy flows around the rest of the world. The numbers show the scale of the challenge. The 28 members of the EU imported 3.38 billion barrels of seaborne crude oil in 2024, according to data compiled by energy analysts Kpler. Assuming the 2025 volume stays the same and the price paid per barrel averages around US$70, this means the EU will pay about US$236.6bil for its crude. The EU's imports from the United States were 573 million barrels in 2024, which if replicated this year would be valued at around US$40.1bil. For LNG, the EU imported 82.68 million metric tonnes in 2024, which would have cost around US$51.26bil assuming an average price of around US$12 per million British thermal units (mmBtu). Imports of the super-chilled fuel from the United States were 35.13 million tonnes in 2024, worth about US$21.78bil. The EU also buys coal from the United States, the bulk being higher-value metallurgical coal used to make steel. Total EU imports of metallurgical coal in 2024 were worth US$6.72bil, assuming an average price of US$200 per tonne, with those from the United States valued at US$2.67bil. Putting together the value of EU imports of US crude oil, LNG and metallurgical coal gives a 2024 total of around US$64.55bil. This is about 26% of the US$250bil the EU is supposed to spend on US energy a year under the framework agreement. If the EU did ramp up its imports of US crude, LNG and metallurgical coal to US$250bil, it would account for 85% of its total spending on those energy commodities. US exports The United States exported 1.45 billion barrels of crude in 2024, according to Kpler, which would be worth US$101.5bil at a price of US$70 a barrel. US shipments of LNG were 87.05 million tonnes in 2024, which would be worth about US$54bil at an average price of US$12 per mmBtu. The US exported 51.53 million tonnes of metallurgical coal in 2024, worth US$10.3bil at an average price of US$200 a tonne. Putting together the value of all three energy commodities gives a total of US$165.8bil, meaning that even if the EU bought the entire volume it would still fall well short of the US$250bil. The scale of the delusion probably exceeds what Trump and China agreed in their so-called Phase 1 trade deal in December 2019, under which China was supposed to buy US$200bil of additional US energy by the end of 2021. The reality is that China never even came close to buying that level, and its imports of US energy didn't even reach what they were before Trump launched his first trade war in 2017. Potential risks There are a few caveats when looking at the framework agreement between Trump and Von der Leyen. The first is that not all the details are known and the US$250bil of energy is also said to include nuclear fuel, although this will only be a small value even if included. The second is the deal will probably include refined fuels, with US exports to the EU of products such as diesel, being almost 110 million barrels in 2024, worth about US$10.9bil assuming a price of US$100 a barrel. But it's still clear that the commitment to buy US$250bil in US energy is completely unrealistic and unachievable. The smart people in the room must know this, begging the question as to why agree to what is obviously a ridiculous number? What happens when the inevitable failure is realised? Perhaps the EU is hoping for the same outcome as China did with the first trade war with Trump in 2019. But owner Etnawati Melani says she fears such business will dwindle when Donald Trump's 19% tariffs hit exports. The measure was lower than the initial extra 32% the US President threatened in April, and better than the 20% he imposed on Vietnam. But Etnawati, who had plans to expand her business, Tegep Boots, to the United States, said her focus would now shift to other markets. 'I have to develop a new strategy. Perhaps we have to diversify our markets, products, and so on. 'If it's possible to enter (the US market), but... not in large quantities at first, that's it,' she said. 'We can't rely solely on the US. There's still many markets in the world. We can still shift. 'I plan to shift focus to Japan and Russian partners.' In return for a lower tariff, Indonesia pledged billions to increase energy, agriculture and merchandise imports from the United States and Trump said Jakarta had pledged to buy 50 Boeing jets. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto suggested after the initial tariff threat in April that Trump was maybe helping Jakarta by causing it to rethink its trade surplus with the world's top economy. Indonesia is the third-largest footwear exporter to the United States behind China and Vietnam, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity. So any new tariff was likely to damage business – particularly in Bandung, where its shoe scene is well-known internationally for beautifully hand-crafted quality leather boots. Economists in Indonesia hit out at the deal with Washington, which Trump says would get tariff-­free access in return. 'This is not an agreement. It's... a one-sided agreement,' Jakarta-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies executive director Yose Rizal Damuri said. But he predicted American consumers would likely bear the costs more than Indonesian businesses, with Trump's tariffs sweeping across many countries. 'The United States itself will be the one more affected. Prices will rise,' he said. Data has shown that US inflation spiked in June as the tolls kicked on. The shop's more seasoned workers such as Jajang – who goes by one name – have already experienced the ups and downs of business, with the Covid-19 pandemic hitting sales, and seeing dozens of colleagues laid off and several dying. 'I don't know about that issue, the important thing is that I work here,' said the 53-year-old when asked about Trump's levies. Others aware of the Trump threat to Indonesian exports were more concerned. One of Etnawati's workers, Lili Suja'i, chipped away at a new set of boots for the three-pair Texan order – riding boots, medium casual boots and loafers – in a workshop located adjacent to the store. He said he feared US customers would be put off by higher costs, with the shop his main income for his family of three. But the shoemakers are ready to fulfil any orders from Americans willing to pay the extra price. 'I'm worried, yes, but before placing an order, we negotiate the shipping costs and prices with the customer,' the 38-year-old said. — AFP

- REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/File Photo SEOUL: Samsung Electronics Co will produce semiconductors for Tesla Inc in a new US$16.5bil pact that gives a boost for its underperforming foundry division. South Korea's largest company announced yesterday that it secured a 22.8 trillion won chipmaking agreement with a global corporation that will run through the end of 2033. Tesla, which already does business with Samsung's contract chipmaking division, is that customer, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named. Samsung's Seoul-traded shares rose as much as 3.5%, their biggest intraday gain in almost four weeks. A company spokesperson declined to comment regarding Tesla, and representatives for the US company did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The contract win comes as Samsung has been steadily losing ground in chip manufacturing. The company, which makes its own memory chips and also fabricates semiconductors on behalf of clients, has had difficulty bringing in enough orders to fully utilise its foundry capacity. That's in contrast to leading chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), which still cannot meet all demand. TSMC held a dominant share of 67.6% of the global foundry market in the first quarter this year, according to Taipei-based TrendForce. Samsung's share slipped to 7.7% from 8.1% in the previous quarter. Bloomberg analysts Masahiro Wakasugi and Takumi Okano said: 'Samsung Electronics' contract to supply semiconductors to an unidentified large global corporation implies a recovery in its foundry business' two-nanometre generation chip production. 'The US$16.5bil contract spans 2025 to 2033 and could boost Samsung's foundry sales by 10% annually, we calculate. It could also lead to new contracts with other fabless chip companies.' Samsung and TSMC are both on pace to deliver the next generation of semiconductor advancement – moving to two-nanometre fabrication – and the new deal is seen as a signal of confidence for the company's upcoming fabrication technology. — Bloomberg
