Why AI is central to the new browser wars

Mint13-05-2025

Despite launching Chrome only in 2008, Google turned it into the world's most popular browser, with a 65% share. Chrome played a key role in Google retaining its monopoly in search, where its share is nearly 90%. Now, in an ongoing trial, the US government may force the tech giant to sell its browser as a remedy for its monopoly in search.
Some see similarities between this and a landmark case in 1998, when the US government alleged that Microsoft abused its monopoly in operating systems by bundling its Internet Explorer browser with Windows, making it difficult for rival browsers like Netscape to compete. While there are parallels, this time it is different because artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the entire digital landscape, including how users search for information online.

The ongoing remedies phase follows an August 2024 ruling that the company illegally maintained a monopoly in online search and used a flywheel effect to establish dominance. A key focus was on Google's deals with smartphone manufacturers. This included, for example, a payment of $26 billion in 2021, including $18 billion to Apple. With a large user base, it could collect more data, which improved the product, attracting even more users.
The US government has proposed behavioural and structural remedies, the most significant of which was to force Google to sell its Chrome browser. It has also proposed that Google should end its exclusive default search agreements with device manufacturers like Apple and that it should license its search results to competitors.
The AI effect
The current case is also important in the context of AI, which has impacted both browsers and search. Now, many users get information online through conversations with chatbots, rather than through search engines. As a result, Google is facing the heat on multiple fronts: from search-focused AI companies such as Perplexity (which has about 15 million active users) to AI model creators such as OpenAI and Grok (with integrated search features in their chatbots). They are all well-funded.
Then, there are traditional rivals such as Microsoft, integrating AI into its browser, Edge. New AI players are getting into browsers, too. Perplexity plans to launch Comet, integrating autonomous AI agents for tasks like research and decision-making. OpenAI reportedly also plans to launch its browser. Both Perplexity and OpenAI (besides Yahoo!) have expressed interest in buying Chrome, as it would give them control over a key 'access point' and also valuable data.
Intelligent devices
New AI companies are also equally worried about the deals Google has made with smartphone makers to consolidate its position in search because it is extending to AI, too. Google reached a deal with Samsung to pre-install the Gemini AI app on its devices, and hopes to reach an agreement with Apple to make Gemini available through Apple Intelligence on iPhones.

Last month, Perplexity AI's chief business officer, Dmitry Shevelenko, testified that Motorola was unable to change the default assistant from Google due to existing obligations, 'despite both parties wanting it to be". Similarly, OpenAI indicated that Google's ability to outspend startups kept device makers like Samsung from making pre-installation deals. Apple and Samsung had a 39% share in smartphone shipments in Q4 of 2024, according to Counterpoint Research. They have little incentive to switch to other services since they get billions of dollars from Google.
Marketing muscle
Outspending competitors in such deals has long been part of the traditional playbook for big companies to maintain dominance. However, with disruptive technologies such as AI, product innovation plays a bigger role. That's how OpenAI could garner a billion users in less than three years. Yet, startups tend to struggle to break the well-entrenched connections forged by incumbents beyond a point. It's especially true with Google, which has also been innovating on AI. The gap between its marketing spend and research & development expenses has widened in the past three years.
Still, an adverse ruling could open the gates for newer players. Besides the ongoing trial, Google is also preparing to face another remedies trial, scheduled to begin this September, in the online advertising market. AI will play an increasingly important role here, too. In both cases, Google has vowed to appeal if there is an adverse ruling.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge Not Selling Well? Here's What Reports Have Said

Last Updated: Samsung has taken a bold step with the Galaxy S25 Edge version and it seems the company is slowly finding if people are warming up to the new product. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge launch brought some concerns about its thin design affecting its demand and need in the market. And it seems the new model is struggling to find buyers since its debut last month. Reports this week have talked about Samsung finding the Galaxy S25 Edge sale figures lower than its expectations that have already put some question marks over its future prospects. The report here quoting industry sources claims that Samsung has not managed to gather a large crowd for its bold device and could become an ambitious experiment that eventually fails in the market. The Galaxy S25 Edge Conundrum Most people were concerned about the need for the Galaxy S25 Edge version especially with its thin and lightweight design. Granted, the phone has the durability to help you feel confident about its usage but the price tag and some of its limitations because of the size were also going to be questioned. The company usually shares sales figures for new launches that shows its excitement around the product. Samsung has not done that for the Galaxy S25 Edge in its home market or other regions, which tells you something is amiss. We'll probably get a clearer idea in the next few months but early signs are not encouraging to say the least. It seems people are finding the same reasons to look beyond the S25 Edge model, and probably waiting to see what Apple has in store with the rumoured iPhone 17 Air version later this year. Samsung should ideally continue with the Edge moniker for a few years, and maybe reduce its SKUs by replacing the Plus with the Edge variant and see if a newer pricing strategy gathers more buyers. We still find it early to judge a product that only made its way in May 2025. It is also possible that a unique form factor like the S25 Edge needs a different marketing push from the brand and maybe get the device into the hands of the consumers to at least let them experience it in person. Our time with the S25 Edge was surprisingly pleasant thanks to the premium design and flagship cameras. Yes, the battery life is a concern because of its dimensions but the novelty value of the product is hard to deny. First Published: June 05, 2025, 13:26 IST

Indian Railways To Make Aadhaar Linking Mandatory For Tatkal Booking To Ensure Fairness

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will make it mandatory for users to link their Aadhaar numbers and login IDs while booking train tickets under the Tatkal quota in order to make the process fair and glitch-free. The move will bar people from booking multiple Tatkal tickets simultaneously, which affects genuine users. "Indian Railways will soon start using e-Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal tickets. This will help genuine users get confirmed tickets during need," Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently said on X. Bharatiya Railways will soon start using e-Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal tickets. This will help genuine users get confirmed tickets during need. — Ashwini Vaishnaw (@AshwiniVaishnaw) June 4, 2025 "The Ministry of Railways, Railway Board, hereby notifies that the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) be allowed to perform Aadhaar authentication, on a voluntary basis, to establish the identity of ticket-checking staff, crew members and passengers, using Yes/No or eKYC authentication facility," noted a Gazette notification dated May 27, 2025. An IRCTC official told PTI recently that the Indian Railway has deployed Artificial Intelligence-based advanced technical solutions to curb unauthorised ticketing practices. The system detects and deactivates such user IDs before they can disrupt the booking system. As per the news agency, the move is already making progress as the creation of new user IDs on the IRCTC platform dropped from 60,000 to 65,000 per day to just 10,000 to 12,000. IRCTC has also blocked 35 million fraudulent user IDs, the official said. "Let's presume that a person named A approaches an unauthorised agent to get a ticket booked from Delhi to Agra. The agent will use several disposable email IDs (using domain names available on Google) and mobile numbers to create, let's say, 30 profiles on the IRCTC platform," the officials told PTI while explaining the process. The email ID becomes invalid, the profile, however, remains after authentication, which is used by unauthorised agents to book a ticket for a person. Hence, the agents have 30 attempts to book a ticket for that one person. Public outcry over Tatkal booking issues Several people have raised issues they face while booking the Tatkal tickets from the IRCTC website, with most recently Dr A. Velumani, the founder of Thyrocare, calling it "betrayal". Dr Velumani shared a viral image on his X account, which noted, "Tatkal booking on IRCTC has become a joke. Seats show available, but the moment it turns 10 AM, the site hangs. By 10:03, all seats are gone - even in remote routes. And then at 10:04, the site suddenly becomes smooth again, as if nothing happened."

Google's 'Find My Device' officially becomes 'Find Hub' across platforms

Google has officially rebranded its Find My Device service to Find Hub, completing a platform-wide rollout that began at the Android Show I/O Edition in May. The updated name is now visible not only on the Play Store, but also across the Settings app in Android devices and on the web platform. According to reports, the rebranding appears with Play services version 25.20.37, replacing all instances of "Find My Device" with "Find Hub". The option to activate the service, previously listed under Security & Privacy, is also now labelled as Find Hub. While Business Standard could not independently verify the update at the time of writing, the broader rollout is in motion. As part of this update, Google has also made privacy-related UI changes. User account details, including name and email previously linked to account settings, are now hidden by default. Google Find Hub: What's new At the Android Show, Google outlined new features for Find Hub, including: Ultra-wideband (UWB) support, enabling more precise location tracking. Initially, this will support Motorola's Moto Tags. Satellite connectivity for offline tracking, expected to arrive later in 2025. Two-tab design: One tab for locating personal devices and another for tracking or sharing real-time location with friends and family. Flexible sharing: Users can share location either temporarily or indefinitely. Expanded partnerships for smart tracking To boost travel-related features, Google has partnered with: These collaborations will allow users to track luggage in real-time and share tracking info with airline partners to aid recovery. Apple's Find My network already integrates with over a dozen airlines, including Air India—Google is likely moving in a similar direction.
