Tejashwi Yadav denies voter ID duplication, blames Patna officials for ‘changing EPIC number'
PATNA: RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday charged the election authorities in Patna with faulting him for their "own mistake" by sending him a notice on having two EPIC numbers. The leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly also claimed that "a good reply" was being drafted for the notice which was sent last week. "I have received a notice not from the Election Commission but from the Patna district administration. A good reply is being drafted, and upon receipt, they would be left with nothing to say. They are trying to fault me for their own mistake. Whose lapse is it if two EPIC numbers have been issued in my name? After all, I have been casting my vote from only one place," said Yadav, the former deputy chief minister. Notably, he had conducted an online search of his EPIC number in the draft electoral rolls last week, which yielded the result: "No records found". Claiming that many other well-heeled persons, including senior bureaucrats, had their names struck off in the draft rolls published as part of the special intensive revision (SIR), Yadav had cast doubts on the efficacy of the exercise which, he has been alleging, was "an attempt to help the ruling BJP-led NDA in the upcoming assembly elections in the state". The district administration in Patna had come out with a rebuttal of Yadav's allegation, sharing a screenshot of a portion of the draft electoral rolls in which names and photographs of the RJD leader, as also his father Lalu Prasad, the RJD president, could be seen. However, Yadav stuck to his guns, charging the election authorities with "changing my EPIC number", even as the ruling NDA demanded that the RJD leader face trial for having two voter ID cards.

Rajya Sabha adjourned amid Opposition protest over Bihar electoral roll revision
New Delhi, Aug 7 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day today till tomorrow amid continued protests by Opposition members demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently underway in Bihar. The House, which had convened at 11 am for proceedings, was earlier adjourned till 2 pm, following protests over the SIR exercise. When the House reassembled after lunch, Opposition MPs resumed their protests, raising slogans and trooping into the Well of the House. Despite the uproar, the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025, was taken up and subsequently passed. During the disruptions, Trinamool Congress MP Mamata Thakur was named by the Chair, Deputy Chairperson Ghanshyam Tiwari, for displaying a placard in the House. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge was briefly permitted to address the House. He described the current period as 'dangerous times' for the country and called for cooperation between the government and Opposition. Kharge urged the government to permit a debate on the SIR exercise, assuring that the Opposition would act in the nation's interest. On the other hand, Leader of the House JP Nadda requested the Chair to proceed with the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025, as per the schedule. The Bill which was moved by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal for its passage, was cleared by Lok Sabha in April. After a brief debate amid sloganeering and loud noises, the Bill was passed with a voice vote following which the Chair adjourned the proceedings for the day. The House will resume its business tomorrow. The Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025 aims to consolidate and amend the law relating to regulation of coastal shipping, promote coasting trade and encourage domestic participation therein, to ensure that India is equipped with a coastal fleet, owned and operated by the citizens of India for its national security and commercial needs, and for matter connected therewith or incidental thereto, according to the Government officials. ‘Time to save democracy': Kharge says ECI acts as ‘representative of the ruling party', backs Rahul's voter fraud claims
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of acting like a 'representative of the ruling party' and allegedly failing in its constitutional duty to conduct free and fair elections. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge alleges 'Vote Chori' is being carried out strategically across several constituencies.(Sansad TV File) 'There was a time when the Election Commission of India was praised across the world. Many countries took training from our Election Commission to conduct fair elections. When any political party raised questions, the Commission would respond or clarify within constitutional limits,' Kharge said in a post on X, originally written in Hindi. 'Today, when someone questions the ECI, instead of responding, it acts like a representative of the ruling party, leveling counter-allegations and making baseless statements without considering the demands of opposition parties,' he alleged. Referring to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's remarks on alleged electoral irregularities, Kharge said, 'Today, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, after thorough investigation, cited examples from Karnataka's Mahadevapura Assembly Segment, explaining how the Election Commission allowed gross rigging in a single election, shredding its constitutional duties, with 1,00,250 votes stolen.' Kharge claimed that such irregularities were not isolated incidents. 'This #VoteChori is happening strategically across many seats in the country,' he added. Announcing the party's next move, he said, 'The Congress Party will raise public awareness about this. Tomorrow, we will begin from Freedom Park in Bengaluru, Karnataka.' 'The time has come to save democracy and the Constitution, to save the country!' the Congress chief added in the post. Addressing reporters at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, claimed that the Maharashtra election results confirmed the Congress party's suspicion that the polls had been manipulated. 'Not giving machine-readable voter list convinced us that the Election Commission (EC) colluded with BJP to 'steal' elections in Maharashtra,' alleged the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He further said, 'They said we are going to destroy the CCTV footage. This was surprising to us because there was a question in Maharashtra about a massive voting after 5.30 pm for the numbers to add up. Our people knew that in the polling booths, no such thing happened. There was no massive voting after 5.30 pm.' 'These two things made us believe with reasonable certainty that the Election Commission of India was colluding with the BJP to steal elections,' Gandhi added.
