Oliver Cole hails father Paul as ‘real legend' after announcing his retirement
Perhaps best known for saddling brilliant 1991 Derby winner Generous, the 83-year-old enjoyed over 1,500 winners during a stellar career which began in Wantage in 1987, and later became British Flat champion trainer in 1991, with his son pointing out he was in competition with a 'golden era' of trainers.
'He's a hell of a legend and has done it from scratch,' said Cole.

'He came from a golden era of trainers and was able to hold his own amongst them and was even champion in 1991.
'In his heyday when he had all of those good horses, he was leading trainer at Royal Ascot in 1994 with four winners and he trained one of the best horses ever in Generous with the way he was destroying those fields.
'He also had some amazing two-year-olds in Dilum and Strategic Prince and horses like Culture Vulture and Mr Dinos. He had the backing of some great owners along the way who enjoyed themselves and he's a real legend.'
Since 2020, the Coles have shared the licence, enjoying Royal Ascot glory with Highland Chief in 2020 and also thriving with the high-class Royal Scotsman.

Oliver will now take over the operation at Whatcombe on a full-time basis, a privilege he puts firmly down to his father's influence and success.
'We're very lucky to be training at Whatcombe, it's an amazing facility and it's an honour to be on the licence, if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be here,' he added.
'It's gone very well as a pair, but now it's down to me to just keep the show on the road. He won't be going anywhere, he's a great man to work with and great for advice, we'll keep kicking.
'I'll discuss with him when things formally hand over, but I imagine it will be pretty soon.'

As well as claiming the Derby by five lengths under Alan Munro, the Fahd Salman-owned Generous completed the English-Irish Derby double at the Curragh and landed the King George at Ascot.
In revealing his retirement plan to The Sun, Cole senior said the chestnut Generous was the 'best I trained', adding: 'I looked out at a horse this morning and just thought the time has come for me to retire.
'I've been sharing the licence with my son Oliver since 2020, and I'm just very old now. Oliver knows what he's doing and is more than capable.'

The owners – Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Jaws dropped when Hollywood A-lister Reynolds, star of the Deadpool franchise, and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-creator McElhenney revealed their intention to buy Wrexham in September 2020. But the last three years have taken Parkinson's total of promotions to six and in January he joined the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho with 1,000 games in management. Hardie joins a striking department featuring Jay Rodriguez, Ollie Palmer and Sam Smith, with Paul Mullin having made a loan move to Wigan after scoring 110 goals in 172 games for the Red Dragons.

Liverpool get chance to land cut-price transfer after major decision confirmed
Liverpool have been linked with Lyon star Malick Fofana and the club's financial woes could benefit the Reds, allowing them to secure a cut-price deal for the winger Liverpool could complete a cut-price move for winger Malick Fofana after seven-time French champions Lyon were relegated to Ligue 2 due to the poor state of their finances. The club were provisionally relegated in November, but were given a chance to show that things had improved. However, the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) were unconvinced and rubber-stamped Lyon's demotion on Tuesday. American businessman John Textor owns a 77 percent stake in Lyon through his Eagle Football Group, which posted debts of £422million back in October. Lyon have branded the decision to relegate the club "incomprehensible" and have said they will immediately file an appeal. It remains to be seen what the outcome of that appeal will be, but a number of clubs may look to swoop for Lyon's stars if they are no longer a topflight club. And Fofana has been linked with Liverpool already this summer, with Sky Sports Switzerland reporting earlier this month that the Reds' chief scout Barry Hunter is a huge fan of the 20-year-old. The report states that Liverpool are 'genuinely interested' in Fofana, but will have to sell Federico Chiesa before they can make a move for the winger. Chiesa struggled for game-time after joining the club from Juventus last season and has been linked with a return to Italy this summer. And Fofana's former representatives, BF SportsPartner, have claimed that Liverpool would be the player's dream move. They told Africafoot earlier this year: "The choice of heart would be Liverpool. "He has the potential to enter the rotation, and above all, we would like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and El-Hadji Diouf. He has the profile to succeed in the Premier League. "He possesses qualities similar to those of Manchester United's Amad Diallo, namely speed, impact, and the ability to create opportunities. There's no doubt he can shine. "For him, this would be an opportunity to continue his development and, above all, to showcase his talent in a league that favours transitional play. However, he'll have to choose the right club, as competition is fierce across the (English) Channel." Fofana recently changed his representatives, signing with Roc Nation Sports in April. Roc Nation was founded by American rapper Jay-Z and counts a number of high-profile footballers among their clients, including Vinicius Jr, Gabriel Martinelli, Kevin De Bruyne and Endrick.

Hibs are in 'advanced talks' with former Dundee star Josh Mulligan, as the 22-year-old free agent closes in on a move to Easter Road. The Edinburgh club have seen off competition from a number of SPFL rivals – and teams down south – to put themselves in pole position to land the versatile all-rounder. Rangers were known to have begun talks with Mulligan, who can play in central midfield, at right back or on the right wing, while Charlton Athletic were also credited with an interest in a player who has been a Dens Park regular for the past three seasons. But Hibs have swooped into stand on the brink of a deal, it is understood, with a source close to negotiations describing talks as being at an advanced stage. Mulligan's Dundee contract expired at the end of the season, effectively leaving him to take his pick of potential suitors. And it appears that he's ready to commit to Hibs. Bushiri and Triantis talks still alive The club remain in talks with central defender Rocky Bushiri, meanwhile, despite the Democratic Republic of Congo's contract having expired at the end of the campaign. Bushiri is due to report back for pre-season training along with all of Hibernian's other international players on Friday, with Gray describing 'positive talks' with the cult hero. Gray is also in the market for at least one striker. So far this summer, he's welcomed pre-contract acquisition Jamie McGrath, with the attacking midfielder expected to compete for position in the No. 10 role.
