Club World Cup 2025: Real Madrid Dominate Pachuca To Seal 3-1 Win Despite Early Red Card
Real faced a setback just seven minutes into the match when Raul Asencio received a straight red card for pulling down Salomon Rondon, who had a clear path to goal.
Real Madrid overcame an early red card to secure a 3-1 victory over Mexico's Pachuca, taking a significant step towards the knockout stage of the FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday.
With the win, Madrid, led by new head coach Xabi Alonso, tops Group H with four points, while Pachuca is eliminated after two defeats.
Saudi club Al Hilal, who held Real to a draw in their opener, face second-placed Salzburg later on Sunday.
The Spanish giants faced a setback just seven minutes into the match when Raul Asencio received a straight red card for pulling down Salomon Rondon, who had a clear path to goal.
This situation gave Pachuca hope for an upset in front of 70,248 fans at the home of the NFL's Carolina Panthers.
Pachuca came close to scoring when Brazilian Kenedy's shot was parried by Thibaut Courtois, and the Belgian goalkeeper made a brilliant save on Alan Bautista's follow-up attempt.
However, Real Madrid managed to control the game in midfield, slowing the pace and limiting Pachuca's opportunities.
The breakthrough came in the 35th minute with a well-executed team goal. Gonzalo Garcia's clever flick released Fran Garcia down the left, who then passed to Jude Bellingham. Bellingham took the ball in stride and scored with a left-footed shot into the corner.
Just before halftime, Real doubled their lead. Trent Alexander-Arnold sent a low cross from the right, and Arda Guler collected Gonzalo's deft lay-off to fire home.
The outcome was sealed in the 70th minute when Federico Valverde scored following a smart exchange with Brahim Diaz.
Pachuca finally got on the scoreboard when Elias Montiel's shot deflected off Aurelien Tchouameni and wrong-footed Courtois.
Alonso, celebrating his first victory as Real coach, praised his team's handling of the early setback.
'We had to defend with one player less for almost the entire game, which made it intense for us. But we showed a lot of sacrifice and solidarity in our defence, which is what's needed," he said.
'We waited for our chances, so I was really pleased with the performance with a player less," he added.

Real Madrid coach praises Mastantuono and downplays player's choice of Messi as world's best
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has praised the maturity of teenager newcomer Franco Mastantuono and downplayed the player's choice of former Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi as the world's best player. HT Image The 18-year-old Mastantuono signed a six-year deal with Madrid and said during his introduction last week that he considers his countryman Messi the best in the world. 'It's logical for Messi to be his favorite player," Alonso said on Monday. "He's from Argentina and he's left-footed, so it's no surprise to me.' Mastantuono's praise of a player from Madrid's archrival surprised many in Spain and attracted most of the headlines after his introductory news conference. Some Madrid fans were not happy with the teenager's comments. Messi dueled with Cristiano Ronaldo for years when he played for Barcelona and Ronaldo — also considered by many the best in the world — played for Madrid. Now, Ronaldo is playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia while Messi is with Inter Miami in the United States. Madrid already reached a deal to sign Mastantuono but had to wait until the former River Plate player turned 18. The club reportedly paid 45 million euros ($52.5 million) in the transfer. 'The first time I spoke to Mastantuono, I was struck by his personality," the new Madrid coach said. "He was 17 then, and he was very sure of himself. He didn't seem at all concerned about making the jump to Real Madrid. That maturity and quality has been evident since he arrived. I know he'll settle in quickly, both on the pitch and in the dressing room.' Alonso added Mastantuono could see playing time in the team's opening La Liga match on Tuesday against Osasuna. 'He'll bring us quality and energy, he's highly committed,' the coach said. "He's got great drive from a defensive perspective. In the little time I've spent with him I can see that Argentine spirit, he's a warrior, but he's got quality, too. He's a combative player and he's got a beautiful left foot, both from set-pieces and in the final pass. He's got lovely technique and he's very young. We have to guide him, but he's already playing at a very decent level.' ___ AP soccer:

Jadon Sancho compounds Manchester United misery after Arsenal defeat by reportedly rejecting loan move to AS Roma
Out-of-favour Manchester winger Jadon Winger appeared set for a loan move to AS Roma with an option to make the deal permanent for £20 million at the end of the season. Sancho's agent, however, has reportedly informed the Serie A giants that he's currently exploring other options. Jadon Sancho had recently starred in Chelsea's triumph at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Reuters Manchester United's hopes of getting some financial relief after splurging on their attack this summer took a hit on Monday with out-of-favour winger Jadon Sancho turning down a loan move to AS Roma that would have fetched the Red Devils £20 million ($27 million) down the road. The development has further soured the mood at Old Trafford after Ruben Amorim's side began their season with a defeat. According to Italian football writer and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Sancho has rejected a move to the Serie A club and is currently exploring alternatives, much to the dismay of his parent club – with whom he had signed a £73 million contract in 2021 after a four-year run with Borussia Dortmund. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Also Read | Roma had expressed interest in signing the 25-year-old on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy him at £20m at the end of the season, but will now have to look elsewhere after being informed by Sancho's agent of the England international's rejection. More from Football Reunion with Solskjaer on the cards? There is a possibility of Sancho playing under ex-United forward and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Turkish top-flight club Besiktas, where he has joined as the new head coach this season. Sancho had briefly played under Solskjaer at Old Trafford in the 2021-22 season, with the latter having been sacked just three months into the season after a poor string of results. The Englishman, however, reportedly isn't too keen on finalising a move to Turkey right away, and is instead keeping it as an emergency option if nothing else works out before the 1 September deadline. The fact that Turkish clubs can complete transfer business until 12 September gives Sancho and his agent more time to contemplate. United have had quite the busy summer, spending over £200 million on the trio of Benjamin Sesko (£73.7 million), Bryan Mbuemo (£71 million) and Matheus Cunha (£62.5 million) in a complete overhaul of what was a misfiring attack last season. Also Read | United, the club that had finished an abysmal 15th last season to register their worst finish in the Premier League era last season, have also signed defender Diego Leon for £7 million from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Several players from their 2024-25 squad have either been released or loaned – the trio of Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof have parted ways for good while Marcus Rashford is among several players loaned to other clubs, with the 27-year-old academy product having joined Barcelona. United began their season with a 0-1 defeat against Arsenal on Sunday at Old Trafford, thanks to a .

Lassana Diarra Asks 65 Million Euros From FIFA, Belgian FA As 'Compensation For Damage Caused'
Last Updated: Ex-France player Lassana Diarra seeks €65M from FIFA and Belgian FA over transfer rules deemed against EU law by CJEU. His lawyer expects a decision in 12-15 months. Former France international Lassana Diarra is seeking 65 million euros ($76 million) from FIFA and the Belgian football association as part of a long-standing legal dispute, announced his lawyer on Monday. Diarra's challenge to FIFA led the world football's governing body to revise its transfer rules following a landmark legal ruling last year, but he has yet to reach a settlement. His lawyer, Martin Hissel, stated the claim seeks 'compensation for damage caused by FIFA rules" on transfers, which the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) deemed contrary to European law last October. 'Following a ruling by the CJEU, in the absence of an amicable solution, it is natural to return to the national courts so that they can implement the CJEU ruling," Hissel said in a statement. 'That is what we are doing today, on the basis of a very clear ruling by the CJEU, which has settled all the essential legal points. The Belgian courts should deliver their decisions within 12 to 15 months." The CJEU found in October that FIFA rules hinder the free movement of players by 'imposing considerable legal risks, unforeseeable and potentially very high financial risks, as well as major sporting risks on those players and clubs wishing to employ them," thereby disrupting the transfer system. At the Belgian courts' request, the Luxembourg-based CJEU examined Diarra's case, who contested the conditions of his departure from Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow ten years ago. In August 2014, Lokomotiv Moscow terminated Diarra's contract, citing contractual breaches by the player. The Russian club also sought 20 million euros compensation from him. Diarra refused and demanded Lokomotiv pay him compensation, but the now 40-year-old was eventually ordered by FIFA to pay his former club 10 million euros, a fine upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Diarra also received a backdated 15-month suspension. As a result, Belgian club Charleroi ultimately decided not to sign the midfielder, fearing the obligation to pay part of these penalties, in line with FIFA regulations examined by the CJEU. Following the CJEU ruling, FIFA announced last December it had adopted an 'interim regulatory framework" regarding player transfers. 'I waited a few months before restarting the national proceedings in Belgium, thinking that, particularly following the efforts of FIFPRO Europe (the European players' union), FIFA and the Belgian football association would at least have the decency to contact me to propose an amicable settlement of the dispute (this was, in fact, the tone of the messages I received from FIFA)," said Diarra in a statement. 'This was not the case. It is their right, but it reflects a persistent culture of contempt for the rule of law and for players, despite the very clear message sent by the CJEU. 'To my great regret, we will therefore once again have to go before the judges, as I have no other choice." Capped 34 times by France, Diarra also played for Chelsea, Arsenal, Portsmouth, and Real Madrid before ending his career at Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.
