Drinking too much alcohol? 4 ways to have less, from smaller glasses to saying ‘Enough'

Drinking alcohol does not do your body any good – and it can become addictive.

Though we have heard the warning a thousand times, we often disregard it when there is something to celebrate or we meet up with friends – situations when, for many people, beer, wine or spirits simply seem to belong.
Does the
occasional hangover come with the territory? A particularly bad one could prompt you to critically examine your alcohol consumption – and perhaps try to
cut down
To drink less, it can help to drink differently. An awareness campaign by Germany's health ministry is suggesting four methods.
1. Start with less
A good way to start is to always order the smallest quantity of an alcoholic drink in a restaurant or bar – a 0.33 litre glass of beer instead of a 0.5 litre one, or a half-pint instead of a pint, for example.

200-year-old condom decorated with erotic art goes on display in Amsterdam museum

The Netherlands' national museum has a new object on display that merges art with Amsterdam's infamous red-light district: a nearly 200-year-old condom, emblazoned with erotic art. Advertisement The Rijksmuseum said the playful prophylactic, believed to have been made around 1830 from a sheep's appendix, 'depicts both the playful and the serious side of sexual health'. It is part of an exhibition called 'Safe Sex?' about 19th-century sex work that opened on June 3. The condom, possibly a souvenir from a brothel, is decorated with an erotic image of a nun and three clergymen. Canadian wildfire smoke reaches Europe; hazy skies over Paris expected

Heavy smoke from intense wildfires in Canada has reached northwestern Europe , the European Union 's climate monitoring service said on Tuesday. The huge plumes are at a very high altitude and do not pose an immediate health risk, it said in a statement. 'Smoke originating from the wildfires in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan has been transported across the Atlantic,' the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) said. Satellites tracked the smoke in mid-May, with some plumes reaching as far east as Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. 'A second, much larger, smoke plume crossed the Atlantic during the last week of May, reaching northwestern parts of Europe on June 1,' CAMS said. Additional plumes are expected to shade the continent in the coming days.

Dutch government collapses as Wilders quits coalition over immigration

Far-right Dutch leader Geert Wilders withdrew his party from the government Tuesday in a row over immigration, bringing down a shaky coalition and likely ushering in snap elections. Wilders has been frustrated with what he saw as the slow pace of introducing the 'strictest-ever immigration policy', agreed with coalition partners after his shock election win in November 2023. 'No signature for our asylum plans … PVV leaves the coalition,' said Wilders on X, formerly Twitter, referring to his far-right Freedom Party. The withdrawal opens up a period of political uncertainty in the European Union's fifth-largest economy and major exporter, as far-right parties make gains across the continent.
