Colombo, Aug 20 (PTI) Deshabandu Tennakoon, the former chief of police, was on Wednesday arrested by the CID, police said here.
Tennakoon was arrested over his alleged role in cracking down the 2022 people's uprising termed the Aragalaya.
He tried to prevent arrest through court intervention but his anticipatory bail application was rejected by the court on Tuesday.
Just two weeks ago, Tennakoon was formally sacked from the post of the inspector general through a parliamentary panel which investigated the charges of misconduct against him.
Tennakoon, the then senior deputy inspector general in charge of the capital Colombo, was named a suspect in the case on the then government's crackdown of the peaceful protestors.
Aragalaya led to the resignation of the then president Gotabaya Rajapaksa bowing to the demand that he resign over his inability to tackle the economic crisis.
Violence erupted in the city on May 9, 2022 as the then government supporters assaulted the protesters. Tennakoon was accused of inaction to prevent the clashes.
In March this year, after evading court on a separate case, Tennakoon was arrested and spent two weeks in remand custody before being released on bail.
He was appointed the police chief in November 2023 despite the highest court sanctioning him for torture of a suspect under police custody.
In July 2024, the Supreme Court suspended him from functioning as the police chief which led to his sacking through the parliamentary inquiry against him. PTI CORR NPK NPK

Agency: Bhopal, Aug 20 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on Wednesday the richness of journalism will remain alive only by struggle for the truth and called upon budding scribes to always be alert, active and aspire for moral values and preserve the democratic system. Drawing on the Ramayana and Mahabharata periods, he noted communication has always played an important role in history. Yadav was addressing the commencement of 2025-26 session of the Makhanlal Chaturvedi National Journalism University and a programme for its new students, 'Abhyudaya 2025', here. The chief minister said, 'The richness of journalism will remain alive only through struggle for the truth. 'Journalism is a form of communication and this art has been of special importance in every era. Whether it is the dialogue of Hanuman ji in the Ramayana or the Yaksha Prashna of the Mahabharata period, communication in both areas played an important role in history," he noted. Yaksha Prashna is a key episode from the Mahabharata, where a divine being, Yaksha, poses a series of philosophical questions to Yudhishthira, the eldest of the five Pandava brothers. The CM opined that communication and journalism have the ability to give a broad or subtle form to the impact of any event. 'In the present era and in the time to come, it is important for students, who are becoming proficient in journalism, to always remain alert, active and ready to maintain moral values, and also strive for the betterment of the democratic system through information and communication," Yadav averred. The chief minister observed 'Abhyudaya' in the field of journalism does not mean just beginning, but a journey of continuous awareness, search for the truth and responsibility that gives a new direction to society. He said in the field of journalism, the Makhanlal Chaturvedi Journalism University has a unique identity in the entire country. It is a matter of pride that legendary poet and writer Makhanlal Chaturvedi was born in Babai Nagar of Madhya Pradesh and he made Khandwa his 'karmabhoomi' (place of work), the CM stated. Speaking on the occasion, noted poet Kumar Vishwas said history has shown the younger generation has always struggled for the betterment of the country. He said students should have clarity regarding their goals and give top priority to neutrality and honesty. Referring to the crisis of media credibility in the era of social media, Vishwas insisted young journalists must work in the print segment for at least three years to acquire proficiency in their chosen language and hone news writing skills. Earlier, Chief Minister Yadav unveiled a statue of Chaturvedi installed in the university campus and also planted a sapling. Nepals claim on Lipulekh neither justified nor based on historical facts: MEA

India and China on Tuesday agreed to resume border trade through Lipulekh pass and two other trading points. In 2020, Nepal triggered a border row by issuing a political map that showed Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh as part of the country. India had strongly trashed the claims. External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal rejected Nepal's territorial claims. 'We have noted the comments of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal related to resumption of border trade between India and China through the Lipulekh pass," he said. 'Our position in this regard has been consistent and clear. Border trade between India and China through Lipulekh pass had commenced in 1954 and has been going on for decades," he added. Jaiswal said the trade had been disrupted in recent years due to COVID-19 pandemic and other developments, and both sides have now agreed to resume it. 'As regards territorial claims, our position remains that such claims are neither justified nor based on historical facts and evidence. Any unilateral artificial enlargement of territorial claims is untenable," he said. 'India remains open to constructive interaction with Nepal on resolving agreed outstanding boundary issues through dialogue and diplomacy," he added. Gurugram: Illegal abortion kits recovered from medical store after raid
Deputy civil surgeon Dr Jai Prakash, who also serves as the nodal officer for medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) in the district, said the health department received a tip-off about an individual named Nani Sarkar, who was allegedly running a medical store illegally at Dhani Chowk, Wazirabad village in Sector 52. An FIR has been registered at the Sector 53 police station regarding the incident. Gurugram, Aug 20 (PTI) A team from the Gurugram health department conducted a raid on a medical store in Sector 53, where they allegedly recovered Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kits and surgical equipment, the police said on Wednesday. Prakash further alleged that the store operator was selling abortion kits without having a registered medical practitioner's license or a valid medical registration. Following the tip-off, civil surgeon Dr Alka Singh formed a team that raided the store; however, Sarkar managed to flee, officials said. During the raid, MTP kits and instruments used in the termination of pregnancies by surgical intervention were allegedly recovered from a plastic drum located at the back of the store. No MTP registration of the medical store or any retail/wholesale drug license was found, officials mentioned further. 'The recovery of MTP kit strips from the store indicates that abortions were performed on the premises. During the investigation, the team turned over the seized materials, records, and video footage to the police, leading to the registration of an FIR against the accused under relevant sections of the BNS and MTP Acts', Dr Prakash said.
