Erie is second to Syracuse as snowiest U.S. city this winter. What other cities are close?
As the end of winter draws near with the official first day of spring on March 20, Erie and Syracuse, New York are battling to take the Golden Snow Globe title.
Erie is no stranger to the Golden Snow Globe national contest, frequently being among the leaders in its population category. The latest totals from goldensnowglobe.com shows Erie is just below Syracuse by less than an inch (0.6 inches) on the leaderboard of snowiest U.S. cities through March 6.
Erie, which led the race until Thursday's snowfall, has accumulated 109.9 inches this season compared to Syracuse's 110.5 inches. Erie's snowfall amount has been confirmed by the National Weather Service office in Cleveland.
The next snowiest cities in the U.S. behind Syracuse and Erie are:
Rochester, New York at 84.3 inches.
Buffalo, New York at 76.5 inches.
Grand Rapids, Michigan at 62.1 inches.
Boulder, Colorado at 58.8 inches.

The National Weather Service says that this winter has been above average by at least 19 inches when it comes to the snowfall total.
The average snowfall for Erie around this time of the season is 90.9 inches.

In the winter of 2017-18, Erie won the Golden Snow Globe title, recording 198.5 inches of snow.
During that winter Erie finished 1 inch shy of breaking Buffalo's record for snowiest season for a large U.S. city, which it set in 1976-1977 with 199.4 inches of snow.
This season Erie is 88.6 inches away from the 2017-18 record and likely won't reach it with the warmer weather around the corner.
Neighboring areas including Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Cleveland are below average for their snowfall totals, according to the National Weather Service.
Cleveland, Ohio has recorded 33.2 inches for the season, which is below the normal amount of around 53 inches.
Buffalo has recorded 76.5 inches so far. Buffalo is just below its average of 82.4 inches at this point in the season.
Pittsburgh has recorded 30.4 inches this season. That total is below its normal for the season, which is 37.6 inches.
"The big snow total difference between Erie and all of these neighboring cities was due to the snowstorm that Erie saw around Thanksgiving," Karen Clark, meteorologist from the National Weather Service, said. "From Nov. 29 to Dec. 3, Erie saw 34.6 inches of snow."
Clark said that some areas in Erie had 4 feet of snow or more during the post-Thanksgiving storm.
Clark says that she wouldn't rule out more snow in Erie for the rest of the season. If any snow is left, it is predicted to be not a heavy amount but just a couple of inches.
Clark says that warmer weather is ahead for Erie with temperatures next week reaching the upper 50s.

Trump Given Bad Weather News About His Birthday Tank Parade
President Donald Trump's upcoming $45 million parade will most likely get rained on, according to current weather forecasts. As of Wednesday, the National Weather Service has predicted that there is a 60 percent chance it will rain Saturday after 2 p.m. with a probability of thunderstorms in the evening, potentially foiling Trump's stacked parade itinerary. Its website currently reads for Saturday night: 'Showers likely before 8pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 8pm and 2am, then a chance of showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Chance of precipitation is 60%.' The rain could significantly impact Trump's big, beautiful military parade, which is meant to celebrate the founding of the U.S. Army 250 years ago, as well as his 79th birthday. The Army said that the parade is expected to start at 6:30 p.m. and finish at around 7:30 p.m., half an hour before possible thunderstorms. Depending on the severity of the weather, certain events, such as the Army's Golden Knights parachute jump and fireworks at the end of the night, could be canceled. The Golden Knights Parachute Team is currently set to parachute into the Ellipse, where a concert will be held following the parade, and present Trump with a U.S. flag. The elite parachute team was already forced to cancel one of their jumps at a community celebration for the Army's 250th birthday at the Redstone Arsenal Army base in Alabama four days ago due to rain. Special Agent Matt McCool, who is in charge of the Secret Service's Washington field office, advised at a news conference Monday that 'due to the large crowds, noise and the weather forecast, that for their safety,' people leave their pets and emotional support animals at home, though service animals are still permitted. He also said that 'we're preparing for an enormous turnout,' the Secret Service reportedly expecting hundreds of thousands of people to be in attendance Saturday. More than 18 miles of fencing are already being put up throughout Washington D.C. in preparation for the event. Yet unfavorable weather conditions could affect public transportation and result in lower turnout than expected. The parade will also include around 9,000 troops marching along Constitution Avenue in Washington D.C., more than 100 military vehicles, and 50 aircrafts, such as Black Hawk helicopters and WWII-era B-52 bombers. 'It's gonna be an amazing day. We'll have tanks, we'll have planes, we'll have all sorts of things. I think it's gonna be great,' Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Tuesday. The estimated cost of the president's birthday parade excludes the projected cost of repairing the damage done by military tanks after the event, which U.S. military officials have said might come out to as much as $16 million. D.C. Mayor Muriel Browser said back in April that 'military tanks on our streets would not be good,' adding that if the president chose to use military tanks, they 'should be accompanied by many millions of dollars to repair the roads.' Around 130 military tanks are expected to participate in Saturday's procession. Trump tried to throw a military parade during his first term as president after seeing the Bastille parade in France in 2017, which celebrates the fall of the Bastille prison on July 14. He even told French President Emmanuel Macron that the U.S. was 'going to have to try to top' France's celebrations. Though his plans fell through due to the parade's estimated cost of $92 million, Saturday's parade was meant to be his redemption. But with the current forecast, all Trump can do is ask, as Barbara Streisand once did: 'Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade.'

With up to 200,000 attendees expected, lightning and heavy rain could pose major safety concerns, with Sunday's forecast offering little improvement. WASHINGTON - The Army's 250th anniversary is set to be celebrated this Saturday with a festival followed by a parade, concert and fireworks. But could thunderstorms put a damper on the day? What we know There is a 60% chance of rain on June 14, according to the National Weather Service. Showers are likely in the afternoon with the possibility of a thunderstorm between 5pm and 8pm – prime time for the parade's scheduled time of 6:30 p.m. FOX 5 Meteorologist Mike Thomas says severe weather could be possible on Saturday – but we won't know until we get closer to. Following the parade, a concert will kick off at 7:30 p.m. followed by fireworks. The 150 military vehicles should be fine in stormy weather. But any flyovers, helicopters, fireworks and the planned performance by the U.S. 'Golden Knights' Parachute Team could be in jeopardy depending on weather conditions. And with up to 200,000 expected attendees, the chance of lightning could be a major issue.
