Google I/O 2025 Set for May 20: Android 16, Gemini AI, and XR Innovations in Focus

Hans India12-05-2025
Google has officially announced the dates for its much-anticipated I/O 2025 developer conference, set to begin on May 20. The two-day event promises a wave of new software innovations, with major updates expected across Android, AI, web, and Cloud technologies. This year's conference will be open to all online, with livestreamed keynotes and technical sessions, while also hosting an in-person gathering at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California.
A Preview of What's Coming at Google I/O 2025
Android 16: Enhanced UI, Security, and Health Features
Among the most anticipated announcements is the unveiling of Android 16, which has been making headlines in recent weeks. Though Google has remained tight-lipped about exact features, early reports suggest the update will bring redesigned volume controls, improved user interface elements, and advanced accessibility features.
One of the standout additions is expected to be Advanced Protection Mode, a security-centric tool that automatically reinforces system defenses for users who may not dive into deeper privacy settings themselves. This feature is designed to cater to everyday users seeking better protection without needing to configure complex options.
Health and wellness will also be a central theme, as Health Connect 2.0 debuts with Android 16. The new version will allow sharing of medical records in FHIR format, an industry standard embraced by healthcare providers. Google says apps will only access or modify this data with explicit user consent, further reinforcing its privacy-first stance. In addition, users can expect tools to track physical activity intensity, with workouts categorised using World Health Organisation guidelines, offering more precise health insights and coaching opportunities.
Gemini and AI Announcements: Google's Expanding Ecosystem
Artificial intelligence is set to be another major pillar at I/O 2025. The event's website highlights tools like Gemini open model, Google AI Studio, and NotebookLM, all pointing toward significant upgrades in AI capabilities.
Leaks hint at a new version of Gemini Ultra, Google's high-end AI model. The enhanced version may come with additional features, possibly tied to a premium subscription. Gemini Ultra is expected to offer advanced natural language processing, coding support, and generative content capabilities.
Google may also showcase Project Astra, an ambitious initiative focused on developing AI "agents" with real-time multimodal understanding — able to interpret text, images, video, and audio simultaneously. Another project gaining attention is Project Mariner, which aims to enable AI agents to navigate the web and perform actions on behalf of users. Clues about this feature surfaced in code found in Google AI Studio, mentioning something called "Computer Use."
Android XR: Google's Leap into Extended Reality
In a bid to join the mixed reality race, Google is set to reveal Android XR, an operating system developed in collaboration with Samsung. Designed for use with headsets and smart glasses, including Samsung's upcoming Project Moohan, Android XR aims to fuse virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences.
What sets Android XR apart is its deep integration with Gemini AI, giving devices enhanced contextual understanding and user interaction capabilities. Google is also positioning XR as a universal platform for other manufacturers, potentially allowing third-party headsets to leverage the OS — placing it in direct competition with Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest.
As Google gears up for one of its most wide-ranging I/O conferences to date, expectations are sky-high. With innovations across mobile OS, AI infrastructure, health data, and mixed reality, Google I/O 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for the tech giant's ecosystem evolution.

Google issues red alert as new cyber attack targets Gmail users using AI with ‘indirect prompt injections'

Google, which has 1.8 billion Gmail users worldwide, recently issued a serious warning about a new kind of cybersecurity threat linked to advances in artificial intelligence, reported Men's Journal. Google alerted everyone about a new type of cyberattack called "indirect prompt injections."(Pexel) Google alerted everyone about a new type of cyberattack called 'indirect prompt injections.' Also Read: Google to pay around ₹300 crore fine in Australia for doing this 'deal' in mobiles Google warns of wave of new threats This threat affects not just people but also businesses and governments. In a detailed blog post, Google explained the danger, 'With the rapid adoption of generative AI, a new wave of threats is emerging across the industry with the aim of manipulating the AI systems themselves. One such emerging attack vector is indirect prompt injections.' The difference with this attack is that instead of directly putting harmful commands into the AI prompt, hackers hide malicious instructions inside things like emails, documents, or calendar invites. These hidden commands can make the AI leak user data or do other bad things, the post explained. Google warned that this threat puts everyone at risk. 'As more governments, businesses, and individuals adopt generative AI to get more done, this subtle yet potentially potent attack becomes increasingly pertinent across the industry, demanding immediate attention and robust security measures,' the blog added. Hackers use Google AI Gemini to steal passwords Tech expert Scott Polderman said hackers are using Google's AI assistant, Gemini, to steal user information. Hackers send emails with hidden commands that make Gemini reveal passwords without the user knowing, as reported by The Mirror report. This warning comes as more people use AI for personal things like dating and relationship advice. Scott said this scam is different from older ones because it's 'AI against AI' and could cause more attacks like this. He explained that these hidden commands trick the AI into working against itself, making users accidentally give away their login details. Scott also pointed out that there's no link to click for the scam to work, it happens when Gemini itself shows a message warning users they are at risk. He reminded everyone that Google has said it will never ask for login details or alert users about fraud through Gemini.

Google announces Tennessee as site for small modular nuclear reactor

Google , with Kairos Power, has selected Tennessee as the site of an advanced nuclear power plant that is expected to supply electricity to the Big Tech company's data centers in the US southeast starting in 2030, the companies said on Monday. Why it matters? Big Tech is requiring massive amounts of electricity to scale up technologies like generative artificial intelligence in energy-intensive data centers. Those record energy needs are driving US power consumption to new highs and propelling the development of fresh power sources like next-generation nuclear energy. The Tennessee reactor is the first to be deployed as part of Google's corporate agreement, announced last year, to buy nuclear energy from multiple small modular reactors. The deal would support 500 megawatts of advanced nuclear capacity, which is enough to power about 350,000 homes, to be developed by California-based nuclear company Kairos. The 50-gigawatt small modular nuclear power plant will be built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, under a long-term power purchase agreement with utility Tennessee Valley Authority, to deliver electricity to Google data centers locally and in the state of Alabama. "This collaboration with TVA, Kairos Power, and the Oak Ridge community will accelerate the deployment of innovative nuclear technologies and help support the needs of our growing digital economy while also bringing firm carbon-free energy to the electricity system," said Google's Amanda Peterson Corio. The project marks the first time a US utility has signed a power purchase agreement for so-called generation IV nuclear power, which is generally seen as the most sustainable and safe form of nuclear power technologies in development, the companies said. Energy secretary weighs in "The deployment of advanced nuclear reactors is essential to US AI dominance and energy leadership," US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in a statement announcing the site selection. "The Department of Energy has assisted Kairos Power with overcoming technical, operational, and regulatory challenges as a participant in the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, and DOE will continue to help accelerate the next American nuclear renaissance." Currently, there are no commercially available advanced nuclear power plants in the US.

The event, taking place on Wednesday, August 20, will see the unveiling of the Pixel 10 lineup alongside the Pixel Watch 4 and the Pixel Buds 2a. Leaks over the past few weeks have already given us a strong sense of what to expect. Still, the official launch will provide the final word, tying all the rumours and reports together in one those looking to tune in, the Made by Google event will be livestreamed on Google's official YouTube channel. The broadcast kicks off at 10 AM PT, which translates to 10:30 PM IST for viewers in India. If you're planning to watch live, all you need to do is head to the Made by Google channel on YouTube and set a reminder so you don't miss the it comes to phones, the spotlight is firmly on the Pixel 10 series. Four models are expected: the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The standard Pixel 10 is said to bring the biggest changes compared to last year, with a new colour palette that introduces Indigo, Frost and Limoncello. The design also makes room for a telephoto camera for the first time in a non-Pro Pixel. Under the hood, it is tipped to run on the Tensor G5 chip, believed to be built by TSMC, paired with a battery close to 5,000mAh. The Pixel 10 Pro is expected to stick closer to its predecessor in looks but carry some incremental improvements. Rumours suggest a 6.3-inch AMOLED display with polished aluminium edges, a 4,870mAh battery, Android 16 out of the box and the same Tensor G5 processor running the show. Camera hardware is likely to match the high standards Pixel phones are known for, and colour options will include Moonstone, Obsidian, Jade and those who prefer a larger screen, the Pixel 10 Pro XL could be the pick. Leaked renders have shown the phone in Moonstone and Obsidian, with Jade and Porcelain also on the list. This model is expected to feature a 6.8-inch AMOLED panel with slim bezels, peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits, and up to 16GB RAM with storage going all the way up to 1TB. A 5,200mAh battery with faster charging speeds of 39W wired is also on the cards. The rear camera setup is said to include three lenses — a 50-megapixel primary, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 48-megapixel Pixel 10 Pro Fold is perhaps the most eye-catching of the lot. Google has already teased it in an official video, showing off slimmer bezels and a 6.4-inch cover screen. Expected to arrive in Moonstone and Jade, the foldable is rumoured to include a 5,015mAh battery, 23W wired charging, and 15W wireless charging with Qi2 support. Like the rest of the family, it will be powered by the Tensor G5 chip and is expected to offer the same camera consistency Pixel users rely smartphones, the Pixel Watch 4 is also rumoured to make its debut. The smartwatch is expected in two sizes — 41mm and 45mm — with Wi-Fi and LTE versions for both. Pricing details have already leaked, with the 41mm Wi-Fi model tipped at $349 (roughly Rs 30,300) in the US and the 45mm LTE version at $449 (roughly Rs 39,000). A new charging system is also likely on the way, replacing the magnetic puck with a cradle design that should cut down charging times significantly. Reports suggest the watch can reach 50 per cent charge in about 15 minutes. Early buyers could also get access to six months of Fitbit Premium and one month of YouTube Google's audio lineup is set for a refresh with the Pixel Buds 2a. These are the successors to the Pixel Buds A-series that launched back in 2021, making them one of the most overdue updates in Google's range. Expected colours include Iris, Strawberry and Fog Light, with a design that closely resembles previous Pixel Buds but with a more refined finish. While details on specs are light, users can expect better battery performance and clearer audio. With Google often bundling earbuds with Pixel phones in certain regions, the Buds 2a could be a smart add-on for early buyers of the Pixel 10 series.- Ends
