FIFA Club World Cup: Borussia Dortmund advances with 1-0 win over Ulsan
Daniel Svensson scored in the 36th minute to lead Borussia Dortmund over Ulsan 1-0 on Wednesday and into the second round of the Club World Cup.
After a giveaway by Ulsan on a poor pass near its own goal, Jobe Bellingham centered to Svensson, who took a touch and beat goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo from about 10 yards.
Dortmund won Group F with seven points, two more than Fluminese, which finished second following a 0-0 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns. Uslan was last, going 0-3.
The match on a 93-degree (33 Celsius) day with a heat advisory drew 8,239 at 26,000-capacity TQL Stadium, where the crowd included US Vice President JD Vance.
Dortmund outshot Ulsan 28-3.
American midfielder Gio Reyna made his first appearance of the tournament, entering for Dortmund in the 78th minute. FIFA gave player priority to the Club World Cup, preventing Reyna from being with the US at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Svensson, a 23-year-old midfielder loaned to Dortmund by Denmark's Nordsjælland last winter, scored his second goal for the German club after scoring in a 3-2 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on April 20.
Dortmund plays on July 1 at Atlanta against Monterrey. Ulsan was eliminated with a 4-2 loss to Fluminense.
'I'm sorry for the fans to not meet their expectations. The climate like this is too harsh. It is not for playing soccer, but it is what it is. So, most teams, I mean, not just only us, we don't feel this kind of weather usually. It is a change of environment,' Hyeonwoo Jo, Ulsan goalkeeper, said.
'The only thing we could have done a little bit better is maybe scoring a bit more goals, because we created a lot of chances today. Football is emotional, so yeah, very nice scoring the goal that turned out to be an important one, also. So, yeah, very nice feeling,' Daniel Svensson, Borussia Dortmund defender, said.

The Cherries ended the 2024–25 season in ninth place with 56 points — a notable improvement from their 12th-place finish the year before. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Liverpool Football Club (@liverpoolfc)advertisementHis arrival brings Liverpool's summer spending to an estimated 170 million, signalling a strong intent to refresh and reinforce the squad. Kerkez follows the signings of Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong and German midfielder Florian Wirtz — the latter joining in a club-record deal reportedly worth up to 116 million. While Frimpong is expected to fill the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold following his transfer to Real Madrid, Kerkez will compete for the left-back spot alongside Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas. With speculation surrounding Robertson's future and Tsimikas yet to nail down a regular starting role, Kerkez could quickly find himself central to Arne Slot's for his pace, pressing intensity, and ability to contribute in the final third, Kerkez fits the profile of a modern full-back — a key requirement in Slot's high-energy tactical setup. His signing not only adds depth to the defence but also aligns with Liverpool's long-term vision of building a youthful, competitive Ends

All 4 Brazilian clubs advance at Club World Cup. One is guaranteed to make the quarterfinals
SAO PAULO: One clear and unexpected force has surged as the group stage of the Club World Cup comes to a close: Brazil. Flamengo, Palmeiras, Botafogo and Fluminense — all Copa Libertadores winners in recent years — all advanced to the second round. All offered tough competition to the powerful European clubs, and all have excited tens of millions of fans at home. There's renewed hope for Brazilian fans after years of defeats against European teams in FIFA competitions. Flamengo and Palmeiras topped their groups — Flamengo stunned Chelsea 3-1 to be the first team to qualify for the knockout rounds. Botafogo, which shocked Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain, and Fluminense qualified in second place. "Our first objective was the Round-of-16, but that isn't the end objective," Fluminense midfielder Jhon Arias said Wednesday after a 0-0 draw with South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns. All four clubs from Brazil have similar expectations for the knockout stage. Botafogo and Palmeiras will face off Saturday, a game which guarantees at least one Brazilian club a spot in the quarterfinals. Flamengo takes on Bayern Munich on Sunday and Fluminense will face Inter Milan on Monday. Corinthians was the last Brazilian club to win the world club title, beating Chelsea in 2012. That tournament format was much smaller than the current 32-team competition which features clubs from five continents.

'Want Everyone To Defend': Alonso Warns Vinicius, Mbappe
Last Updated: Last season, Carlo Ancelotti had said he isn't concerned if Kylian Mbappe pressed or not and wanted the striker to focus on goalscoring. New Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has warned his star players, including Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, that they must all contribute defensively. Last season, under Carlo Ancelotti, Los Blancos failed to secure a major trophy, partly due to the forward line's reluctance to work hard for the team, which frustrated the Italian coach. 'What I am certain of is that we need and want everyone to defend — the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively," Alonso stated in a news conference ahead of Madrid's Club World Cup clash against RB Salzburg. 'They have to get close together, they have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated. Vini, Jude (Bellingham), Fede (Valverde), Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too." Last season, Ancelotti mentioned that he was not concerned if Mbappe pressed or not and wanted the striker to focus on goalscoring. The 26-year-old scored 43 goals in all competitions during his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu after moving from Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid will face Austrian side Salzburg in Philadelphia on Thursday, aiming to secure the top spot in their final Group H match, but they will be without Mbappe. The French superstar was not included in the squad as he continues to recover from a stomach bug. Mbappe missed the first two matches but returned to training on Wednesday. 'I was happy to see him on the (training) pitch, it was the first day he's got his boots back on and has been running, he's doing well, but not enough to play tomorrow with the level that we need," said Alonso. 'He said it himself when we spoke after training, he prefers to be ready for the last 16, he's in the recovery process, he wasn't perfect for tomorrow." In Madrid's second match, a 3-1 win over Mexican side Pachuca, Brazilian forward Rodrygo was left on the bench, amid speculation he might leave the club this summer. However, Alonso confirmed that the Brazilian remains a crucial member of the team. 'He's doing well, he's enthusiastic, it was a technical decision (to bench him) the other day, but Rodrygo is still an important player, we will need him in this Club World Cup," said Alonso. 'He's a special player and he will have a big role at this tournament." With AFP Inputs First Published: June 26, 2025, 13:52 IST
