Karratha, Port Hedland mark King's Birthday public holiday before rest of WA

For almost 30 years, a small pocket of Western Australia's north-west has quietly celebrated an annual public holiday one month before the rest of the state.
Residents and businesses in the City of Karratha and the Town of Port Hedland are the only two local governments with alternative dates for the King's Birthday public holiday, which is observed at the end of September for the rest of WA.
Under the Public and Bank Holidays Act 1997, local governments may request the King's Birthday public holiday be celebrated on an alternative date of significance within its district.
The FeNaClNG festival and Hedland Cup justify the holiday for the City of Karratha and the Town of Port Hedland, respectively.
The City of Karratha has held the different date since 1996.
Earlier this year, almost 80 per cent of respondents in a City of Karratha survey voted in favour of maintaining the public holiday in August for another three years.
The FeNaClNG festival started in 1972 and is named after the formulas for iron, salt and natural gas, representing some of the Pilbara's largest resources trade.
Festival attendee Sherry Fitzgerald has participated in the event for nearly 20 years and wants to see the public holiday tradition continue.
"It just brings everybody together, everybody is friendly," she said.
But others, like Hannah Whelan, believe "it isn't really fair" the holiday falls at a different time to the rest of the state.
"People should be able to have the same long weekend as the rest of the state so they can make the most of it, visiting their family if they want to."
'It's a bit strange to me," she said.
While some local businesses take the public holiday, others still choose to observe the September public holiday date.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said it depended on the company and the choice of the employer, with some businesses even choosing to take both public holidays.
"If businesses take advantage, their employees manage to get an extra public holiday than everyone else in the state," he said.
However, he noted the holiday can be disruptive for bigger companies.
"There are a lot of businesses that obviously operate in Perth and also have links over the eastern states as well, so it can disrupt a few businesses because they like to have their public holidays all in line," he said.
It's a common issue in Western Australia, where the state government is reviewing its public holiday schedule to align holidays like the King's Birthday, Labour Day and WA Day with other states.
If changes are made, regional local governments will still be allowed to celebrate the King's Birthday on an alternative date.

Resources Top 5: Lindian partners with REE major Iluka for Kangankunde

Partnership for Kangankunde REE project funding and offtake High-grade niobium is emerging as a significant contributor to the Kameelburg project Exceptional rock chip sampling results have been returned from Central Otavi project Your standout small cap resources stocks for Wednesday, August 6, 2025 Lindian Resources (ASX:LIN) A strategic partnership has strengthened the standing of the Kangankunde project as one of the world's most attractive and advanced rare earth projects and represents a win-win for partners Lindian Resources (ASX:LIN) and Iluka Resources (ASX:ILU) as well as for Malawi and Australia. The partnership incorporates a binding loan term sheet of US$20 million (~$32m) and full-form offtake agreement with Iluka and has seen Lindian reach 15c, a 59.6% improvement on the previous close with more than 38m shares changing hands. Iluka will provide a cornerstone US$20m Construction Term Loan Facility over a five-year tenor while the 15-year strategic partnership will provide Iluka with offtake of 90,000 tonnes (6,000tpa) of rare earth monazite concentrate from Lindian's Kangankunde project until a total of 9,600dmt of contained neodymium and praseodymium has been delivered. The concentrate will feed Iluka's fully integrated Eneabba Rare Earths Refinery Facility in Western Australia, which is partly funded by the Australian government. Iluka will also be granted a right of first refusal (ROFR) for the phase 2 Kangankunde production expansion for up to a further 375,000 tonnes (25,000tpa for 15 years), subject to Iluka providing a 50% debt funding offer for the expansion capital cost and agreeing to Lindian's revised commercial terms (such as pricing mechanisms). This provides a strong foundation for additional growth and aligns with establishing WA as a strategic hub for the downstream processing of third-party rare-earth feedstocks. The binding strategic partnership with Iluka provides a credible pathway forward for the development of Kangankunde, whilst delivering long-term contracted revenue. Kangankunde will produce a premium monazite concentrate over a long initial Life of Mine (LoM) of 45 years, based on JORC ore reserves. 'This is a pivotal milestone for Lindian and is a major step towards accelerating the development of Lindian's globally significant Kangankunde rare earths project in Malawi,' Lindian executive chairman Robert Martin said. 'These agreements will provide a multi-decade source of feed for Iluka's Eneabba refinery facility in Western Australia, backed by the Australian government. The floor price protection, no financial ratio covenants and offtake-linked terms are fit-for-purpose for the company, ensuring the long-term interests of shareholders are enhanced.' Aldoro Resources (ASX:ARN) The world-class rare earth element credentials of the Kameelburg project in Namibia continue to be enhanced by Aldoro Resources with high-grade niobium emerging as a significant contributor. Assays have extended known REE and niobium mineralisation to ~1100m along a NW-SE orientation and demonstrate continuity and scale. Diamond holes DD005B and DD008A encountered significant mineralisation throughout the entire drill core with the former extending the mineralised zone by 400m. Hole DD005B was drilled to a depth of 399m and intersected a combined 102.8m zone of REE dominant mineralisation grading 2% total rare earth oxides, 0.18% niobium pentoxide and 203ppm molybdenum in the upper layer and 206.6m at 0.76% TREO, 0.43% Nb2O5 and 52ppm Mo in the lower niobium dominant layer. This included a top result of 4.14% Nb2O5. Hole DD008A returned 200.5m at 1.64% TREO, 0.177% Nb2O5 and 349ppm Mo in the upper layer and 75.6m at 0.61% TREO, 0.165% Nb2O5 and 233ppm Mo in the lower layer. Results will be included in an updated resource estimate that Aldoro Resources expects to release later in August. This is likely to be a significant improvement to the maiden resource of almost 280Mt at 2.45% TREO equivalent announced earlier this week. 'Diamond holes DD005B & DD008A continue to demonstrate the continuity and scale of the Kameelburg deposit, and we are comfortable these two holes will add significant tonnage and grade to the updated mineral resource estimate encompassing all holes drilled in the phase I program,' chairperson Quinn Li said. 'In addition, the high-grade niobium mineralisation intersected by DD005B provides further support of our internal model that the occurrence of a deeper high-grade zone of mineralisation to the west of the carbonatite represents an exciting area that warrants further exploration when our larger diamond rigs arrive in September.' Once Kameelburg drilling is completed, ARN will mobilise the rig to drill the Omuronga Carbonatite. Golden Deeps (ASX:GED) Exceptional rock chip sampling results for copper, zinc, silver and lead with high-grade germanium and highly anomalous antimony from the Central Otavi project in Namibia saw Golden Deeps hit 2.9c, an increase of 32% on the previous close. Grades of up to 38.3% Cu, 35.4% Zn; 2,473 g/t Ag and 97 g/t Ge were returned from sampling of strongly mineralised gossans (oxidised sulphide) and sulphide occurrences within a 1km x 800m area. Trenching and channel sampling of the key gossan and sulphide outcrops is underway in conjunction with further soil and rock chip sampling in extensions of this large system. Geophysical programs, including IP surveys, will be carried out to detect Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag sulphide targets within the gossan corridors, to be followed by drill testing as soon as possible. 'The identification of these outcropping oxidised sulphide gossans – and the spectacular grades of copper, zinc, silver and lead, with high-grade germanium and highly anomalous antimony, over such a widespread area – clearly demonstrates the potential for substantial, high-grade mineralised sulphide discoveries in multiple zones,' Golden Deeps CEO Jon Dugdale said. Albion Resources (ASX:ALB) Albion Resources has kicked off the second phase of its RC drilling program at the Yandal West Project in the highly-prospective Yandal Greenstone Belt of Western Australia. The new program will cover around 1700m and target multiple high-priority gold prospects. These include the Collavilla Historical Workings target where outcropping shallow mineralised quartz veins have delivered high-grade historical results. This new drilling aims to step out from there, toward the greenstone contact. Another target is Collavilla East, which contains a chargeability anomaly extending to around 300m deep near known mineralisation. At Barwidgee Central target drilling will follow up on historic intercepts, testing mineralisation and anomalous surface geochemistry and geophysical targets. Also on the drilling schedule are targets across the broader Ives Find area and the May Queen prospect. Waratah Minerals (ASX:WTM) The word is out about the gold potential of Waratah Minerals Spur project southwest of Orange in NSW and in proximity to the massive Cadia Valley gold and copper operations of Newmont with shares rising for a third consecutive day. The $107m company hit a new four-year high of 60c, an increase of 14c or 30.5% on the July 5 close and double the close of 30c on Friday, August 1. These increases were sparked by drilling results released on July 4 that have enhanced confidence in the project's potential to host a large-scale, high-grade epithermal gold system with plenty of upside along the rapidly emerging Spur Gold Corridor.

The government's best major defence purchase

Mogami was selected over the German-made ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems' MEKO A-200 because it was the more capable ship and the company had a better industrial plan, Defence Minister Richard Marles announced. As Australian Strategic Policy Institute senior analyst Euan Graham said before the decision was announced, he had been told the Japanese were 'ahead on every significant criteria except price'. The US is believed to have quietly supported the Japanese bid. The frigates will help secure Australia's maritime trade routes and vital northern approaches. It is a significant advantage that Japan offered to allocate a ship that was already in production to Australia, accelerating delivery of the first vessel. It is scheduled to be delivered in 2029 and operational in 2030. The program will cost $10bn over a decade, delivering three vessels to be built in Japan. The remaining eight will be built at the Henderson shipbuilding precinct in Western Australia. Japanese ambassador Kazuhiro Suzuki said the process would kickstart an advanced manufacturing boom in Australia, as Ben Packham reports. Before the decision was announced, Mr Suzuki said at least 12 major Japanese companies would invest in Australia if MHI's bid succeeded. While Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy previously said that the decision would be made on the basis of the frigates' design and the bidders' industrial plans, rather than geopolitical considerations, the selection also provides important strategic benefits. 'There's no other country in the world that is quite as aligned with Australia as Japan,'' Mr Marles said. The contract would cement Japan's quasi alliance with Australia (sometimes colloquially referred to as 'Jaukus''), Mr Suzuki said, adding: 'Japan and Australia held 39 joint exercises last year, including multilateral ones – roughly one in every nine days.'' The decision, which deserves the bipartisan support it has attracted, is the Albanese government's most important and best defence decision to date, as Greg Sheridan writes. It contributes to the strategic evolution of Japan as a major military and industrial power within the US alliance and gives life to the vision that Tony Abbott pioneered as prime minister by trying to partner with Tokyo to build Australia's future submarine. On that occasion, Japan lost out to France's Naval Group, which later lost the contract when the Morrison government committed to the AUKUS partnership, with nuclear-powered submarines. As China takes its military build-up across the Asia-Pacific region to a level unparalleled since World War II, dangerous times demand lethal defences. The Mogami frigate is designed to carry plenty of firepower. Mr Marles described it as a 'next-generation'' stealthy vessel, with 32 vertical launch cells capable of launching long-range missiles. It also has a highly capable radar and sonar. It was 'a general-purpose frigate capable of engaging in air warfare and undersea warfare', he said. News of the frigates comes a day after Mr Marles announced an improvement in the number of ADF recruitments and retention. Rarely has defence hardware and personnel mattered as much in peacetime. Purchasing the MHI frigates is an important step that paves the way not only for more defence spending, but judicious spending. Read related topics: AUKUS

Rumble set for gold and tungsten take-off at Western Queen

Emerging miner Rumble Resources' historical diamond core testing returns multiple high-grade tungsten assays from Western Queen project A Maiden tungsten MRE is on track for August, with further exploration at Western Queen targeting additional mineralisation. Early metallurgy indicates tungsten could deliver strong revenue alongside the WA project's near-term gold production Special Report : Rumble Resources is set to significantly expand the potential of its Western Queen project, with high-grade tungsten assays confirming a major system of the critical mineral alongside its existing gold resource. The company last month upgraded the gold mineral resource estimate (MRE) to 3.72Mt at 3.1 grams per tonne (g/t) for 370,000 ounces of gold, and Rumble (ASX:RTR) is now closing in on a maiden tungsten resource at the project. Assays from the latest historical diamond core testing have revealed multiple high-grade tungsten intersections of 3.45m at 0.66 per cent tungsten trioxide (WO₃) from 299m, including 1.5m at 0.96 per cent WO₃ and 0.45m at 1.32 per cent WO₃. And another intercept returned 4m at 0.75 per cent WO₃ and 0.71 g/t gold from 220m, including 1m at 2.24 per cent WO₃ and 0.97 g/t gold. More upside in view Tungsten mineralisation has now been identified over a 1.5km strike between the Western Queen South and Central open pits, with geological modelling outlining 18 separate tungsten lodes. These lodes are adjacent and sub-parallel to the gold structures, and remain open along strike and at depth, suggesting further upside. Rumble is also conducting a reconnaissance field program across the broader Western Queen area, where additional tungsten skarn targets have been identified. Independent consultant Ashmore Advisory has been engaged to deliver the maiden tungsten MRE, which is expected to be finalised in August. Meanwhile, early metallurgical testwork has indicated that the scheelite-bearing tungsten ore could provide a meaningful revenue stream alongside Western Queen's near-term gold production outlook. A bulk sample is currently being prepared for more detailed testwork by Mineral Technologies to develop a grade versus recovery curve, which will inform mine planning and scheduling. The company's managing director and CEO, Peter Harold, said: 'This work has demonstrated that Western Queen hosts a major tungsten system in addition to the high-grade mineralisation. 'Having just reported a significant gold resource upgrade to 370,000 ounces at 3.1 g/t it's very exciting to also be on the verge of reporting the maiden tungsten resource at Western Queen, especially given the strong interest in tungsten projects thanks to the metal's strategic importance. 'With growing global demand for tungsten due to its strategic importance in defence, aerospace and industrial technologies, Rumble is well-positioned to advance Western Queen as a dual gold and critical minerals asset of national significance. 'I look forward to us reporting the maiden Western Queen tungsten resource and seeing how much more tungsten our geological team find. ' Critical applications Tungsten is a critical mineral facing high and escalating demand thanks to its high melting point, hardness and density. These properties make it ideal for a range of industries including aerospace, defence and electronics. But its most common use is in cemented carbides, used for cutting tools and wear-resistant materials. China currently produces more than 80 per cent of the world's tungsten ore and there is a strong push by Western governments to reduce the reliance on Chinese sourced tungsten. Multi-commodity opportunity The news of more high-grade tungsten out of Western Queen follows Rumble acquiring the highly prospective Thunderstorm gold project in WA's Goldfields-Esperance region of WA during April. RTR is also continuing to advance its world-class zinc-lead-silver Earaheedy project.
