
ICRISAT develops world's first extreme heat-tolerant pigeon pea through speed breeding
Interacting with the media on Monday, Dr Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT, stated, 'This breakthrough in developing a summer-adapted pigeon pea cultivar is a shining example of what science can achieve when driven by urgency and purpose. By transforming pigeon pea into an all-season crop, our scientists have delivered a timely solution with the potential to address pulse shortages and the climate challenges facing farmers across India.'
This heat-tolerant, photo- and thermo-insensitive cultivar has been successfully tested in the states of Karnataka, Odisha, and Telangana, demonstrating yields of 2 tons per hectare. Crucially, it represents a breakthrough in pigeon pea cultivation, allowing the crop to be grown not only during the traditional rainy (kharif) season but also in the extreme heat of summer, where temperatures can reach up to 45°C.
Previously, pigeon pea was limited to specific growing seasons due to its sensitivity to photoperiod and temperature.
ICPV 25444, currently undergoing field trials, marks a turning point by transforming pigeon pea into an all-season crop and opening new possibilities for Indian farmers.
Dr Stanford Blade, Deputy Director of Research and Innovation at ICRISAT, explained, 'This breakthrough was made possible by the world's first pigeon pea speed-breeding protocol developed by ICRISAT in 2024. The protocol enabled researchers to grow up to four generations per year, reducing the time required to develop a new variety from 15 years to just five.'
ICRISAT has unveiled this pioneering speed-breeding protocol for pigeon pea, an achievement led by Dr Prakash Gangashetty, Senior Scientist in Pigeon pea Breeding, and his team. Developed over a year, the protocol addressed the complex challenge of speeding up crop improvement processes and reduced the time for advanced cultivars to be submitted for registration trials to 3-4 years.
By growing pigeon peas in controlled environments and utilizing space-optimized planting in 4-inch pots, scientists managed to grow 18,000 plants per season in a 2,250 sq ft area to maximize seed generation. This process was further enhanced using advanced genomic technologies with the seed-chipping method. The new cultivar is poised to address India's pulse deficit.

IIEST restores, displays country's oldest seismograph, unearthed from godown
1 2 Kolkata: India's oldest seismograph, which had been lying at the wood godown of Indian Institute of Engineering, Science and Technology, Shibpur, till a few months ago, has finally been restored and displayed at the eight-storey building that houses the engineering college director's office and some departments. The earthquake measuring instrument, an original Benioff horizontal seismograph, was built by Victor Hugo Benioff of California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1932. It was Caltech that had gifted the seismograph to the geophysical laboratory of the institute, then known as BE College, Shibpur, marking India's entry into the global network of seismic observatories. IIEST Board of governors chairperson Tejaswini Ananth Kumar said, "This instrument (although defunct now) stands as a testament to India's early contributions to global geophysical research, with BE College playing a pioneering role in advancing seismology and establishing the country's presence in international scientific collaborations. It also shows the city's contribution to science, technology and research and is necessary to showcase the evolution to students." In 2019, the instrument was pulled out from beneath a one-storey building that was built on the campus for the geophysical lab but was later used as the university engineer's office. At present, the building houses a canteen. Though there were plans to lodge the heritage device in a proper place, it did not materialise and was kept at the wood godown, said a campus insider. "It was around June that we came across the seismograph at the wood godown while cleaning it," IIEST spokesperson Nirmalya Bhattacharyya said. " Under the leadership of director VMSR Murthy, we decided to clean it, restore it and put it on display. Assistant registrar Bivore Das helped us with the history and importance of the instrument. A rare copy of one of the recordings of an earthquake has also been retrieved and displayed." "The geophysical lab used it to contribute seismic data to international earthquake catalogues. It became an essential part of earthquake monitoring during the interwar period, post-World War II and especially during the International Geophysical Year (1957–58). It was also during that period, under the leadership of maths professor S K Chakraborty, that BE College was selected as one of the few Indian observatories to send seismic and cosmic ray data," he said. ISRO Sets Up Station In Ladakh To Simulate Life On Moon, Mars
Marking a significant leap in India's space exploration efforts, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has set up the Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE) in Ladakh's Tso Kar Valley. It is a high-altitude, Mars-like environment selected to test life-support systems and technologies for future lunar and Martian missions. The HOPE station, inaugurated on July 31 by ISRO chairman Dr V Narayanan, will be used to test systems for future space missions. The project is led by ISRO's Human Space Flight Centre, along with support from an industry partner and top research institutions. The analogue mission is part of a growing international movement to study how humans might survive and thrive in extra-terrestrial environments by replicating the harsh conditions of other planets on Earth. Why Tso Kar Valley Was Picked For Testing The Tso Kar Valley was chosen for its environmental similarities to Mars, which include high UV radiation, low atmospheric pressure, extreme cold and saline permafrost. The HOPE facility has two connected units. One is an eight-metre wide living space for the crew, while the other is a five-metre utility module housing equipment and support systems. A 10-day trial mission is being held from August 1 to 10, where two crew members will stay inside and take part in various physical, mental and task-based tests. Scientists from institutions like IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIST Trivandrum, RGCB Trivandrum and the Institute of Aerospace Medicine in Bengaluru are leading several experiments. They are studying how isolation affects the body and mind, testing health-monitoring tools, and trying out methods for working on planetary surfaces and collecting microbes. The results will help shape safety plans, equipment and systems for future space missions. ISRO On HOPE Mission Calling the HOPE mission 'a rehearsal for the future,' Dr Narayanan said that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of expanding private sector participation in India's space programme. Coinciding with the HOPE mission, new research from Ladakh's high-altitude Puga Valley has uncovered clues about the origins of life on Earth. Indian scientists have found that the valley's geothermal springs may mimic early Earth conditions and can preserve organic molecules associated with life's beginnings. A study by the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) has found traces of amino acid compounds, fatty acids, formamide and sulphur in calcium carbonate deposits (travertine) from the area. According to lead researcher Dr Amritpal Singh Chaddha, 'The high UV exposure and extreme conditions of the Puga Valley mimic those of early Earth and potentially, ancient Mars.' Published in ACS Earth and Space Chemistry, the study, along with the ongoing HOPE mission, is positioning Ladakh as a key hub for India's growing space and astrobiology efforts.
