Hyderabad: In a significant advancement for Indian agriculture, scientists at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) have developed ICPV 25444, a first-of-its-kind pigeon pea cultivar that can withstand high summer temperatures and mature in just 125 days.
Interacting with the media on Monday, Dr Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT, stated, 'This breakthrough in developing a summer-adapted pigeon pea cultivar is a shining example of what science can achieve when driven by urgency and purpose. By transforming pigeon pea into an all-season crop, our scientists have delivered a timely solution with the potential to address pulse shortages and the climate challenges facing farmers across India.'
This heat-tolerant, photo- and thermo-insensitive cultivar has been successfully tested in the states of Karnataka, Odisha, and Telangana, demonstrating yields of 2 tons per hectare. Crucially, it represents a breakthrough in pigeon pea cultivation, allowing the crop to be grown not only during the traditional rainy (kharif) season but also in the extreme heat of summer, where temperatures can reach up to 45°C.
Previously, pigeon pea was limited to specific growing seasons due to its sensitivity to photoperiod and temperature.
ICPV 25444, currently undergoing field trials, marks a turning point by transforming pigeon pea into an all-season crop and opening new possibilities for Indian farmers.
Dr Stanford Blade, Deputy Director of Research and Innovation at ICRISAT, explained, 'This breakthrough was made possible by the world's first pigeon pea speed-breeding protocol developed by ICRISAT in 2024. The protocol enabled researchers to grow up to four generations per year, reducing the time required to develop a new variety from 15 years to just five.'
ICRISAT has unveiled this pioneering speed-breeding protocol for pigeon pea, an achievement led by Dr Prakash Gangashetty, Senior Scientist in Pigeon pea Breeding, and his team. Developed over a year, the protocol addressed the complex challenge of speeding up crop improvement processes and reduced the time for advanced cultivars to be submitted for registration trials to 3-4 years.
By growing pigeon peas in controlled environments and utilizing space-optimized planting in 4-inch pots, scientists managed to grow 18,000 plants per season in a 2,250 sq ft area to maximize seed generation. This process was further enhanced using advanced genomic technologies with the seed-chipping method. The new cultivar is poised to address India's pulse deficit.

This ovarian reserve is the finite pool of egg cells (oocytes) that female mammals are born with. Unlike sperm, these crucial egg cells cannot be regenerated. The findings are important since, unlike sperm, oocytes cannot be regenerated. 'Over time, the quantity and quality of these eggs naturally decline due to factors like oxidative stress, inflammation and general cellular wear. This process accelerates with age. 'Cat B,' a protein-degrading enzyme, seems to be a key driver of this decline. By lowering its levels, we may be able to delay egg loss, effectively extending fertility naturally,' said The scientist team, which includes Aradhana Mohanty, Anjali Kumari, Lava Kumar S., Ajith Kumar, Pravin Birajdar, Rohit Beniwal, Mohd Athar and Kiran Kumar P., pointed out that the implications go far beyond the laboratory. It is because across India's rural heartlands and urban hospitals, fertility is quietly becoming a shared crisis. As both livestock and women age, their ability to reproduce declines, with significant biological and economic consequences, said researchers. In humans, fertility begins to decline in the early 30s, with a sharper drop in the 40s, reducing chances of conception and increasing the risk of miscarriage or chromosomal disorders. While assisted reproductive technologies like IVF provide options, they are often costly, invasive and less effective in older women. A safe, biological method to slow ovarian ageing could revolutionise fertility preservation for millions. For farmers, a simple intervention to extend reproductive lifespan of livestock could improve herd productivity, reduce stray cattle populations, and support the incomes of smallholder farmers who form the backbone of Indian agriculture. This is a rare moment where science serves both the farm and the family. From barns to birthing rooms, this discovery bridges animal science and human medicine, promising a future where age is no longer a barrier to reproduction, said researchers. For a country navigating the twin challenges of rural sustainability and reproductive health, the implications are profound and hopeful, said NIAB director G. Taru Sharma. The research results were published in the latest issue of 'Aging Cell'.

Professor Dhuvuri Subramaniam from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science -- Group Captain Shukla's first flying instructor, said he is "waiting for the countdown and is in good spirits. "I am excited for Shux. We both had the same path of being a fighter pilot and then test pilot. So I know how he feels and what he's going through," said Mr Wirtz, who added that he also knew astronaut Kalpana Chawla, who had died in an accident in 2003. "I was good friends with Kalpana Chawla. She was the Indian-American astronaut on Columbia.... she was an amazing, wonderful human being. And I know that Shux is going to follow in her tradition. So I know this is a great day for India to see the next Indian astronaut in space," he added. Asked about the special area of interest for the second astronaut India will soon have, Mr Wirtz said, "For his MTech research at IIC, he is working on human habitats in space". The current project, he indicated, also dovetails with Group Captain Shukla's interest. The scientists would be experimenting with seeds, bacteria, microalgae and other life forms. Asked about the projects, Mr Wirtz, though, gave a jovial sketch of what would happen once the spaceship docks. "The first thing that will happen when they open the hatch, everybody will get hugs, they'll welcome them on board. And then they are going to be amazed that, you know, we've been in this little capsule for 30 hours... they're going to be in this massive, huge spaceship. So just getting used to moving around with your hands, you know, floating is really tough to do. Hopefully, somebody will grab them and drag them down to the cupola and let them look out the window. It is this amazing seven-windowed module," he said. For every astronaut, the first couple days are very disorienting, Mr Wirtz said -- "You feel, yeah, I had a raging headache. I had the worst headache I've ever had. So everybody take a few days to get used to it". But time constraints also mean they have to get busy soon. The two weeks that the astronauts will be in the space station, will go by "in a flash" he added.
