Rory McIlroy's frustrated reaction after missing Masters-winning putt on the 18th hole said it all
Rory McIlroy had it in his hands. With just one successful putt on the 18th hole at the 2025 Masters, McIlroy would've finally gotten the monkey off his back. He would've finally won his first-ever Masters and completed a career Grand Slam.
Alas, with McIlroy, it clearly can never be easy.
While nursing a one-stroke lead, McIlroy was just off on his Masters-winning putt. He truly was that close to finally climbing the metaphorical mountain at Augusta. The miss set up a thrilling playoff with Justin Rose. Although, judging by McIlroy's frustrated reaction, I'm not so sure he was thrilled about going to a playoff:
Oof. For McIlroy's sake, here's hoping the playoff has a better result.

Brewers use best 60-game stretch in team history to state case as best team in the major leagues
ATLANTA (AP) — Before Tuesday night's 7-2 win at Atlanta, Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy suggested 'most people couldn't tell you five players on our team.' A look at the standings would indicate more Brewers players soon will be recognized by more fans. After all, it's difficult to overlook a team that not only continues to extend its lead in the NL Central but also boasts the best record in the majors. 'What we're doing in here right now is special,' said right-hander Freddy Peralta after allowing only four hits and one run in five innings while setting a career high with his 13th win. 'We're just enjoying the game and coming to compete every day,' Peralta said. 'We have to keep it that way.' Peralta was surprised to learn he had established a career high for wins in a season. 'It always feels good to get the win as a team but also personally for me, it's a big deal,' Peralta said. Murphy said Peralta, who was named to this year NL All-Star team, is "just getting started. ... This is the best Freddy has ever been. I thought he was really, really good.' The Brewers lead second-place Chicago by four games in the NL Central following the Cubs' 5-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. The Brewers have a five-game winning streak. They have won six straight road games and are 44-16 in their last 60 games overall. It's the best 60-game stretch in team history. Murphy said it will be important for players to keep their focus in the final stretch of the regular season. 'We really have to be disciplined right now, more than ever before," Murphy said after the Brewers (69-44) moved 25 games over .500, their best record of the season. Milwaukee's road success has been an important part of the surge to first place. The team's 33-24 road record gives the Brewers the best winning percentage (.579) away from home in baseball. The record includes winning the first two games of the three-game series in Atlanta. 'You can't assume everything is going to go our way going forward,' Murphy said, adding he recognized the Brewers were fortunate to avoid giving up more runs Tuesday night when the Braves left 14 runners on base, tied for their highest total in the last two seasons. The Brewers also have made key moves this year, including their trade for first baseman Andrew Vaughn on June 13. Vaughn has an 11-game hitting streak, matching his career high, following a two-run single on Tuesday night. He is hitting .429 with four homers and 14 RBIs during is hitting streak. He is hitting .370 since joining the Brewers. Murphy said his players 'are hungry' and 'don't every try to play safe.' 'That's the fun of it,' he said. ___

Naomi Osaka powers into semifinals in Montreal, will face Clara Tauson
MONTREAL (AP) — Naomi Osaka powered into her first National Bank Open semifinal, beating No. 10 seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday night. Osaka advanced to face No. 16 seed Clara Tauson, who eliminated sixth-seeded Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4 in the first quarterfinal of the night. Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion who reached No. 1 in the rankings, continued her best performance in a WTA 1000 tournament since reaching the final in Miami in 2022. She stepped away from tennis for 15 months toward the end of that season and had daughter Shai in July 2023. The native of Japan is seeking her eighth career title and her first since the 2021 Australian Open. Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko takes on ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the other semifinal Wednesday. Mboko, who's playing in her first main draw at the National Bank Open, will rise into the WTA's top 50 after beginning the year outside the top 300. The 18-year-old from Toronto has defeated five higher-ranked opponents en route to the semifinals, including top seed Coco Gauff in the fourth round. Tauson dedicated her victory to her grandfather, Peter, during an on-court interview at IGA Stadium. 'I really wanted to win for him today,' she told the crowd before breaking down in tears. 'I really wanted to come out here and show my best tennis for him, and hopefully he's watching.' Tauson said she only found out about her grandfather's death on Monday, a day after she eliminated Wimbledon champion and No. 3-ranked Iga Swiatek 7-6 (1), 6-3. She spoke of him as one of the biggest supporters of her career. 'He used to coach me a little bit playing tennis and drove me to almost every single practice from my school,' the 22-year-old native of Denmark said. 'It was tough news yesterday morning when I woke up, but I think it's for the better. He was not feeling great for a while.' Tauson hasn't lost a set in the tournament. Keys failed to convert two break chances in the first game. After the American held serve, Tauson won the ensuing five games to take the first set. 'Not my best performance out there today,' said Keys, who won this year's Australian Open. 'She played amazing tonight. She played incredibly well, she served really well. It was just one of those things where I felt like I kept trying different things, and she was just beating me. 'When she's serving like that, it's going to be really hard to break her.' ___

Rory McIlroy's absence from first portion of PGA Tour postseason draws concerns from organizers
Rory McIlroy has had another busy schedule this season. But this week, he found a way to lessen his workload. McIlroy elected to skip the St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, much to the dismay of at least one PGA Tour organizer. Peter Malnati, a player director on the PGA Tour Policy Board, said he was "very concerned" by McIlroy's decision. The FedEx St. Jude Championship serves as the first leg of the playoffs. The BMW Championship is the playoff's second leg, while the Tour Championship later this month in Atlanta will conclude the 2025 postseason. McIlroy's choice appeared to prompt PGA Tour officials to mull a rule change that could mathematically lock in certain players to the second and third playoff legs. McIlroy and PGA Tour playoffs top-seeded golfer Scottie Scheffler accumulated so many points from events throughout the season that their leads would keep them within the top-50 and top-30 thresholds that the upcoming tournaments mandate. The Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta brings the year's top-30 players together for a shot at the FedEx Cup trophy. Malnati hinted that a rule change was possibly on the horizon. "I think there is stuff in the works, and I'll leave it at that," he told GolfWeek. Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth pushed back against the idea McIlroy's actions will be the start of a trend for other players. Spieth previously served as the PGA Tour policy player director. "You might have 1-2 guys do that for an event, but I don't think it will become a thing because they are still huge events against the best players in the world," Spieth said. "I think they're trying to figure out how to make sure you don't skip both of them and ideally neither of them." McIlroy's absence was not completely unexpected, considering he previously hinted that he was contemplating skipping this year's St. Jude Championship. "There's a few tournaments that I played this year that I don't usually play and that I might not play next year," McIlroy told The Telegraph in Nov. 2024. "I played the Cognizant in Palm Beach Gardens, [the Valero Texas Open in] San Antonio and [the RBC Heritage at] Hilton Head. And I'll probably not play the first playoff event in Memphis. I mean, I finished basically dead last there this year and only moved down one spot in the playoff standings." Despite missing the first leg of the postseason, McIlroy is expected to compete in the penultimate event of the playoffs in Baltimore and the final leg in Atlanta later this month. The Northern Irishman is also slated to be lead participant for Europe in this year's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.
