A doc-to-be is killed by her father & uncle. Punishment should be a deterrent for such regressive, violent families
If the 23-year-old partner of an 18-year-old woman in Gujarat had not filed a habeas corpus petition, the murder of medical aspirant Chandrika would not have come to light – her family had explained her death in June as a heart attack/ suicide. Her father and uncle killed her because in the perversity of patriarchy, they feared her achievement of qualifying the very tough medical entrance exam NEET would bring the family 'dishonour'. Studying in a co-ed medical college was a no-no, having a partner sacrilege. They cut her off from the outside world, tasked her with household chores – because, of course, that's her 'duty' as a woman, and becoming a doctor was unthinkable. Then they killed her.
Chandrika qualified to study in a govt medical college – no mean feat. That she also fell in love just shows that youth will find a way no matter how strict the home-front. But what daughter can imagine that a parent would not be proud of such an achievement and that her father and uncle could plot to kill her? Every such story highlights the predatory nature of patriarchal families on their young. What is most chilling and scary here is the silence of the rest of the family, of the neighbourhood, of the community, and doubtless, in Banaskantha, the tribe or caste. It is this silence that allows parents and relatives to get away with murdering their children. How many crimes slip past?
It has taken decades for girls' education to be finally acceptable even in the most backward of societies. But even today, for lakhs of school-leaving girls, their dreams of higher education are shackled by ultra-conservative chains. Education opens the mind, allows imagination free rein. But for the likes of Chandrika's father, such freedom is scary – beyond 'control'. We would send girls to school but cannot tolerate their asserting their likes and dislikes, let alone freedom to choose a future. One can only be grateful for the power of love that took a worried 23-year-old to court – and a murder was discovered. Chandrika's killers must be punished severely as a warning to all such fathers who would murder their daughters.

This new reserve aims to form a contiguous protected area across southern Mexico and the northern regions of the two Central American nations, integrating existing conservation efforts. PM's 2 key promises from Red Fort Two themes stood out in Modi's I-Day address. Mission Sudarshan Chakra, he said, will be a powerful platform that will protect both public places and critical infra, and be operational by 2035. This is evoking comparisons with Israel's Iron Dome. More relevant is the stellar performance of the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) and Akashteer during Op Sindoor. But air defence is an evolving tech. India faces two issues. First, versatile and rapidly improving battlefield drones. IACCS and Akashteer need upgrades for this. Second, we are still using diverse platforms – Indian, Russian, Israeli, etc. This is less than ideal. If Sudarshan Chakra can address both these concerns, it will be a massive boost for military self-reliance. On GST, Modi promised Indians will pay a whole lot less for a lot of stuff they buy. Pegging this to Diwali was classic Modi. From what he said and what officials briefed later, the biggest GST reform since its inception will make it basically a 2-rate system – 5% and 18% (a few 'sin' goods will be taxed at 40%). That will be a huge improvement on the current, complicated 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% structure. Consumers are likely to benefit from a large number of consumer goods moving from the 12% to 5% rate, some from 18% to 5%, and axing of the eye-watering 28% rate. Health insurance premiums may finally get taxed at a lower rate. That there'll be procedural rationalisation, too, makes this mithai sweeter. And that GOI seems ready to take a revenue hit initially and bet on higher consumption to make this up down the line, is welcome reformist spirit. BJP will hope lower prices will be a vote attractor in poll-bound Bihar, a densely populated poor state. But that takes nothing away from the significance of what Modi promised. ‘My own kids fight with me,' Bengaluru's traffic woes hit home for DK Shivakumar: Report

It's not just commuters losing patience with Bengaluru's traffic gridlock - Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar says the frustration has reached his own dinner table. Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar suggested flyovers as a potential solution for Bengaluru's traffic.(ANI) During a discussion in the legislative council on Thursday, Shivakumar revealed that his children regularly scold him over the city's nightmarish congestion and aging road network, The Times of India reported. ALSO READ | Suspected cylinder blast in Bengaluru kills 8-year-old boy, injures six others "Bengaluru is not as planned as New Delhi. The road dimensions have remained the same since city founder Kempegowda's time, but vehicle numbers have exploded. It can take six to seven hours to travel just 10-15 km. My own kids complain it takes up to three hours to reach some parts of the city and fight with me. High court judges who commute to work from Hebbal have also been complaining that it takes 45 minutes to travel to work," he told the publication. ALSO READ | Bengaluru enjoys calm weather on Independence Day; Light showers expected in some areas Responding to BJP MLC CT Ravi's remarks that Bengaluru residents waste an average of 117 hours a year stuck in traffic, Shivakumar said the problem is growing rapidly. With over 1.2 crore registered vehicles and 40 lakh more entering daily from nearby districts, the city's outdated road design hasn't kept up. ALSO READ | Bengaluru's Yellow Line metro sees huge passenger surge ahead of long weekend. Video With road widening no longer viable due to sky-high land costs, Shivakumar suggested scaling up elevated corridors and double-decker flyovers as long-term alternatives, according to the report. However, the city continues to grapple with a heated debate over more roads versus mass transit options like the metro - a clash between quick fixes for current congestion and sustainable, long-term urban mobility solutions. Bengaluru is becoming increasingly infamous for its worsening traffic snarls, riddled with incomplete flyovers, stalled metro stretches, and delayed roadworks that choke movement daily. With pothole-ridden roads, monsoons only magnify the misery, turning key routes into waterlogged traps due to poor drainage systems. Across the city, shoddy infrastructure exposes a glaring gap between plans and execution.
