Android phone slowing down? These 5 tips will give it a serious speed boost

Tom's Guide2 days ago
Your Android phone doesn't have to feel sluggish. While phones naturally slow down over time, there are simple fixes that can restore much of their original speed without needing to buy a replacement.
The slowdown usually happens because of accumulated digital clutter, old apps you forgot about, downloaded files taking up space, and settings that haven't been optimized since you first got the device. Most performance issues can be solved in just a few minutes with some basic maintenance.
These tweaks won't turn your phone into a brand-new device, but they can make a noticeable difference in how quickly apps open, how smoothly everything runs and how much longer your phone stays responsive throughout the day.
Here's how you can speed up your Android by boosting its performance.
Take a few minutes to scroll through your home screen and app drawer, then delete anything you haven't used in months.
Those forgotten apps are potentially running background processes that slow down your phone and drain your battery. You can uninstall apps straight from your home screen or you can uninstall through the play store.
Start with the obvious candidates like games you played once, shopping apps for stores you never visit, and duplicate apps that do the same thing.
Open your phone's file manager app and start with the Downloads folder. This is where random files accumulate: screenshots you meant to delete, PDFs you downloaded once, and memes friends sent you months ago.
Delete anything you don't need and move important files to cloud storage like Google Drive. Most file manager apps also have a section showing large files that are eating up significant space.
Look for old videos, duplicate photos, or large documents you can either delete or move to the cloud. Even clearing just a few hundred megabytes can make your phone feel noticeably faster, especially if you were running low on storage space.
Long-press on a blank area of your home screen and select Home settings to access customization options. Small changes can make your phone feel completely different and run more smoothly.
Try adjusting your app grid size, as switching from a 4x5 layout to 5x5 gives you more space and can reduce the number of home screen pages your phone needs to load. Enable features like swiping down on the home screen to view notifications instead of reaching to the top of the screen.
Remove widgets you don't actually use, as they constantly update and consume system resources. Consider using a simpler wallpaper instead of live wallpapers or complex images that require more processing power to display.
Turn on dark mode to save battery life (and reduce eye strain). This simple change can extend your phone's battery life and make everything feel more responsive.
Go through your notification settings and turn off alerts for apps that don't need them, reducing interruptions and background activity.
Disable automatic app updates over mobile data to prevent surprise data usage and performance hits when multiple apps try to update simultaneously.
And turn off the feature that automatically adds new app icons to your home screen to keep things organized. You can do this by toggling off the "Add app icons to Home screen" option in Settings.
Open Settings and go to Privacy then Permission Manager to see which apps have access to your personal data. Go through each category — location, camera, contacts, microphone — and turn off access for any apps that don't actually need those permissions to function.
Limiting these permissions not only protects your privacy but also reduces background activity that can slow down your phone. Pay special attention to location permissions, as constantly tracking your whereabouts is one of the biggest battery drains.
This takes just a few minutes but can significantly improve both your phone's performance and your data security.

Trump's Truth Social launches AI search powered by Perplexity

Truth Social, President Trump's social media platform, is beta testing an AI search feature powered by Perplexity . Truth Search AI is launching first on the web version of Truth Social, with plans to begin a public beta for the feature on iOS and Android in the near future. "We're excited to partner with Truth Social to bring powerful AI to an audience with important questions," said Dmitry Shevelenko, chief business officer at Perplexity. The controversial AI company has found itself embroiled time and again in accusations of copyright infringement , plagiarism and stealth crawling websites for content and this latest partnership will likely only continue to fuel the turmoil around the company. The partnership is the latest example of big tech finding opportunities to cozy up to the president. Just this week OpenAI announced that it would be offering its ChatGPT Enterprise subscription to more than 2 million federal workers at practically zero cost. Choosing Perplexity as the engine for Truth Search AI also puts Trump Media in business with Jeff Bezos, one of Perplexity's largest backers . This week Apple CEO Tim Cook presented Trump with an engraved glass plaque set in a 24-karat gold base, to commemorate domestic investments by the company in an effort to avoid the president's ire at the company's foreign manufacturing of iPhones. With the addition of Truth Search AI, Truth Social gains an AI layer to its platform without the expense of building one, presumably in efforts to keep up with the likes of Grok on X . Perplexity, for its part, gains exposure to a new base of users to further train on.

Truth Social's AI search is powered by Perplexity, but the platform can set limits on sources

AI startup Perplexity is powering a new AI-powered search engine on Truth Social, President Donald Trump's social media platform. The search engine, dubbed Truth Search AI, is already available on the web version of Truth Social, with public Beta testing on its iOS and Android apps planned for 'the near future.' Trump Media said in a press release that Perplexity's tech provides 'direct, contextually accurate answers with transparent citations' which will help Truth Social 'exponentially increase the amount of information available' to users. Nonetheless, the social media platform maintains control over which sources of information the AI search engine draws from. Truth Social is using the Perplexity Sonar API, which promises to query the web to retrieve current and verified information – even if that information is scraped from websites that block Perplexity's crawlers – and supports structured output so users can define the format in which they'd like to see the search engine's responses. Jesse Dwyer, a Perplexity spokesperson, told TechCrunch that the Sonar API will be accurate to whatever sources Truth Social limits it to. 'We have no visibility or control over that,' Dwyer said. 'Similar to you using the API inside of your own company or if you were an academic researcher and wanted to use it to search your own data.' TechCrunch has reached out to Trump Media to learn more about whether Truth Search AI will have access to the entire web, whether it will prioritize certain sources over others, and whether the AI will be directed to respond favorably about the president and current administration and unfavorably towards Democrats. To assess which sources the searchbot would cite, Axios asked it a bunch of questions — like 'What happened on January 6, 2021? and 'Why was Donald Trump impeached?' In all the responses, was either the most common or the only listed source of information. Others included The Washington Times or Epoch Times, per Axios. In contrast, Perplexity's public search engine returns a wider variety of sources, including Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, NPR, and Politico. Truth Social plans to refine and expand the search function 'based on user feedback as we implement a wide range of additional enhancements to the platform,' said Devin Nunes, CEO of Trump Media and a former California congressman, in the statement. Dmitry Shevelenko, Perplexity's chief business officer, also noted in the statement that Perplexity's AI delivers answers with 'transparent citations that allow anyone to dig deeper.' In late July, alongside his AI Action Plan, Trump published an executive order targeting 'biased AI,' or models that aren't 'ideologically neutral.' The order specifically referred to information about race or sex, unconscious bias, systemic racism and other ideas thrown into the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bucket as 'pervasive and destructive' ideology that can 'distort the quality and accuracy of the output.' Truth Search AI comes in the same week that top AI firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google were added to a list of approved vendors that can sell their services to civilian federal agencies. OpenAI on Wednesday reached a deal with the U.S. government's central purchasing arm to sell ChatGPT Enterprise to agencies for just $1 per year. Sign in to access your portfolio
