Craven Week: WP hold off SWD to be crowned champions
The Youth Weeks programme came to an eventful conclusion on Saturday, with all 16 teams featuring in the final round of the U18 Craven Week tournament staged at Hoërskool Middelburg.
WP finished the week with three victories, while the Bulls, Boland, Lions, Leopards, Free State, Griquas and Pumas were among the winners on the final day of the competition.
The battle between WP and SWD was fiercely contested, with the Eagles drawing first blood.
Western Province responded with tries from fullback Jaden Ocks, captain Josh Neill – who was named the Player of the Tournament – and No 8 Quintin Potgieter to take a 17-9 lead into the break.
SWD clawed their way back after WP were shown a yellow card early in the second half.
Eagles prop Kai Pratt scored during this period, while flyhalf Virgil Pockpas added the conversion to reduce the deficit to 13 points.
The Eagles scored again right before full time, but WP managed to secure a 27-21 victory and yet another unbeaten campaign.
Earlier in the day, the Bulls thrashed Eastern Province 76-24, with wing Thabiso Simelane, centre Dylan Stumke and flanker Elwin Jansen Van Vuuren scoring two tries apiece. Simelane went on to finish the tournament as the leading try-scorer (six).
The Lions dominated the first half of their match against the Western Province XV, before the Cape side hit back in the second stanza. After leading 17-7 at the break, the Gauteng outfit hung on for a 27-26 victory.
Free State controlled the contest against the Sharks, who struggled with their discipline. Flyhalf Darius Erwee kept the scoreboard ticking, while hooker Marinus Oosthuizen scored two tries to steer the boys from Bloemfontein to a convincing 34-12 win.
In other fixtures, the Leopards produced one of the most dominant performances of the day, scoring eight tries in a 54-7 rout of the Limpopo Blue Bulls, Griquas edged the Valke 26-19, and the Pumas were too good for Border, winning by 48-12.

South Africa cruise to opening T20 tri-series win over Zimbabwe
HARARE - South Africa continued their dominance over Zimbabwe by beating their neighbouring country by five wickets in the opening match of a Twenty20 international tri-series at Harare Sports Club on Monday. New Zealand will play their first match of the tournament when they meet South Africa at the same venue on Wednesday. Zimbabwe were restricted to 141 for six after being sent in, with captain Sikandar Raza top-scoring with 54 not out. Both teams showed multiple changes following a two-match Test series in Bulawayo, which South Africa won comfortably. Opening bowler Lungi Ngidi took a wicket and conceded only seven runs in a three-over opening spell. Left-arm spinner George Linde took three for 10, including two wickets for four runs in the last over. South Africa lost three wickets in the six-over power play against aggressive left-arm fast bowler Richard Ngarava and seamer Trevor Gwandu. But new cap Rubin Hermann (45) and hard-hitting player of the match Dewald Brevis, who thrashed 41 off 17 balls, put on 72 for the fourth wicket to ensure a comfortable win. South African captain Rassie van der Dussen praised the two young batsmen. "There was a little bit of pressure up front," he said. "Losing three wickets in the power play was not ideal but their partnership was brilliant." Brevis hit five sixes and a four in his innings, including three successive sixes off leg-spinner Ryan Burl. Raza said Ngarava, who took three for 35, and Gwandu (two for 15) were outstanding. "It was the first game of the winter (in Harare) and we weren't sure of the wicket," said Raza of his team's batting performance. "At least we know these are going to be high-scoring games."

Orlando Pirates coach on why he gave Mbokazi the captain's armband
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has given his reason on why Mbekezeli Mbokazi was handed the captain's armband during the Buccaneers' pre-season friendly against Pafos FC on Sunday morning. With regular club captain Nkosinathi Sibisi subbed off, the player known as 'TLB' took over as captain for the first time. The 19-year-old made his debut just a few months ago but is already regarded as one of the best players in the Orlando Pirates squad. Ouaddou said the club was trying to give more resposibility to the 19-year-old. 'Mbokazi is one of the big men of this team, he's South African and he is proud of what he's doing,' Ouaddou said on SuperSport TV . 'He's someone we believe that he's a captain, and we're taking it step by step. We want to give him more game time because he will be one of the main men for us this season. 'So we're trying to give him that responsibility, and he was fantastic, he had a great match, and he needs to continue like this,' the Pirates coach said. Should Mbokazi wear the armband in an official match, he could be the youngest Orlando Pirates captain ever. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
