Govt pays attention to states' requests in determining 13MP project priority - Anwar

Borneo Post3 days ago

Anwar mingles with exhibition participants in traditional Sandayo dress during the official opening of the Kaamatan Festival at Hongkod Koisaan on Friday.
PENAMPANG (May 30): The Federal Government always takes into consideration the needs and requests of all states in determining the priority of projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He explained that the priority of projects could not be determined solely by the Federal Government and, instead, is jointly decided with the state governments after their requests are heard and attended to by the Federal leadership.
Citing Sabah, Anwar said that in almost every working visit he has made to the state, meetings or gatherings are held between leaders and senior federal and state officials to directly discuss requests from the state government.
'I'm not saying that 13MP (projects) do not take place, previously there are requests which are vetted by the Federal ministries… now no more, (as) requests are made directly (at meetings) chaired by the Prime Minister, there are Chief Ministers, there are state ministers.
'We listen and pay attention directly. Frankly, this only happens because of uniformity, (as well as) good and close relationships due to mutual trust,' he said when officiating the Sabah state-level Kaamatan Festival celebration here om Friday.
The event, held at Dewan Hongkod Koisaan, Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA), was also attended by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam and KDCA president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
Anwar also expressed his gratitude to Hajiji and the Sabah government for their openness to cooperating with the leaders and Federal government in a bid to develop and elevate the dignity of Malaysia and Sabah.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the spirit to strengthen Sabah must be nurtured through the strong unity between the Federal and state governments within the framework of the Federation.
As such, he reminded everyone not to raise issues that can erode that good relationship simply for political mileage, especially ahead of the Sabah State Election.
'In the battle leading up to this election… leaders who have led before, who were together, sometimes forget just to ramp up the political atmosphere, raising issues that erode confidence in the country… this is not healthy,' he said.
Anwar said the Federal government and the states, particularly Sabah and Sarawak, have many diversity and differences, but this must be seen as a strength for Malaysia as a country for the wellbeing of its people.
He said that when Malaysia was established, 'Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu' (Unity is Strength) was chosen as the national motto to illustrate the importance of togetherness in diversity in strengthening the country.
'Diversity can also be destructive, where there are countries in this world which initially embraced a multiracial and multi-religious society, but later experienced hostility between races, religions and regions. Which nation can be successful like that, everything will end up in ruin.
'So, no matter how difficult it is, any sensible leader in a political campaign to fight for the post of state assemblyman or Member of Parliament must remember never to sacrifice the state or country,' he said.-Bernama

No tensions in Umno despite Tengku Zafrul's exit, says Zahid

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the unity government will hold internal discussions over Tengku Zafrul Aziz's role as the investment, trade and industry minister. PETALING JAYA : Tengku Zafrul Aziz's exit from Umno has not led to any tensions within the party, says its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid said most of Umno's grassroots even believed Tengku Zafrul made the right decision to leave the party since he 'has no loyalty to it'. 'I don't see any indication of the 'temperature' rising in Umno. It's better for him to leave if he has no loyalty to the party. 'Don't disturb (Tengku Zafrul) because he's currently performing the haj. Hopefully, his mind will be filled with peace,' Zahid, who is also a deputy prime minister, was quoted as saying by Bernama. The Barisan Nasional chairman said the unity government will hold internal discussions over Tengku Zafrul's role as investment, trade and industry minister, a post he was appointed to on Umno's quota. 'The appointment of ministers is at the absolute discretion of the prime minister. So it's better for us to hold internal discussions to avoid various interpretations,' he said. Tengku Zafrul's exit from Umno, announced on Friday, has led to calls for him to step down as the investment, trade and industry minister. Zahid previously urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to ensure Umno had its quota of seven ministers restored. Tengku Zafrul, whose senatorship expires at the end of the year, had said he would leave it to Anwar to decide on his Cabinet post.

Esteel project delayed by licence approvals, says Sabah minister

Sabah industrial development minister Phoong Jin Zhe said the company and its financial capacity were vetted by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah's industrial development minister, Phoong Jin Zhe, has sought to explain the delay in a RM31 billion steel investment project, saying this was caused by setbacks in securing the relevant approvals and natural gas supply. He said the initial projection to have Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd's factory begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year was based on the assumption that the approvals could be obtained without delay. However, he said, 'some obstructions' surfaced with Putrajaya's implementation of a two-year moratorium on approving manufacturing licences for steel-related industries. Phoong said this was acknowledged by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim when he launched the project, which was first announced in November 2022, at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip). 'The special approval was only obtained on Jan 24, 2025, which affected the project's original timeframe,' he said in a statement today. Phoong said technical assessments and negotiations with various stakeholders for the supply of natural gas to the factory had also pushed back the project's implementation. He was responding to Warisan's Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong, who had urged the state government to come clean about the delay in the Esteel investment. Chong said the land lease agreement between Sogip and Esteel, signed in November 2022, stated that the first phase of the project would begin in the fourth quarter of 2023 and was expected to be completed within two years. The former DAP man also questioned the authenticity of the investment, claiming it was hard to find information on Esteel online, and also raised questions on the increased investment amount from RM20 billion to RM31 billion. Phoong maintained that the company and its financial capacity were vetted by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, as required for the approval of its manufacturing licence. 'The latest amount of RM31 billion is a result of the company's latest review and calculation, which includes the construction of the plant, jetty and other related facilities. 'Value adjustments are common among phased development projects,' he said. The first phase of Esteel's investment in Sabah, estimated to be worth some RM6.4 billion, was officiated by Anwar at the Sabah International Convention Centre on May 30.

To embrace the development of digital technology, Zambry said an online book review competition will also be held so that people from all corners of the country can participate. 'Our aspiration is clear: to create a nation that not only reads, but reads with understanding and understands with the spirit of building. 'I hope 'Telaah' becomes a platform to revive the culture of knowledge. From the highest leaders of the country to the grassroots of society, 'Telaah' belongs to everyone. Insya-Allah, we'll meet in the next episode of 'Telaah' after this,' he added.
