Iran security chief meets officials in Iraq before Lebanon visit

Ali Larijani, the head of Iran's top security body, met senior officials in Iraq on Monday, ahead of a visit to Lebanon, where the government plans to disarm the Tehran-backed group Hezbollah.
Tehran has suffered a series of blows in its long-running rivalry with Israel, including during 12 days of open war between the two countries in June.
Israel, briefly joined by the United States, struck Iranian nuclear facilities, while Israel has also devastated Hamas and Hezbollah since late 2023 – both part of Tehran's anti-Israel 'axis of resistance'.
Iranian state television said Larijani, the head of the National Security Council, had departed on a three-day trip, his first since being appointed.
The visit to Baghdad comes amid deep divisions in Iraq over a proposed law that would further formalise the role and, possibly, the autonomy of a powerful coalition of pro-Iran former paramilitaries.
Iranian state television said Larijani signed a 'joint security memorandum of understanding' with Iraq's National Security Adviser Qassem al-Araji.
A statement from Araji's office said the two officials discussed the implementation of the bilateral agreement, as well as the Israel-Gaza war.

Israeli army approves ‘framework' for Gaza offensive as Hamas claims ‘aggressive' incursions

The Israeli military said on Wednesday it had approved the framework for a new offensive in the Gaza Strip, as Hamas condemned what it called 'aggressive' Israeli ground incursions in Gaza City. The approval for the expanded offensive comes days after Israel's security cabinet called for the seizure of Gaza's largest city, following 22 months of war that have created dire humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian territory. Israeli armed forces chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir 'approved the main framework for the IDF's operational plan in the Gaza Strip,' a statement released by the army said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has not provided a precise timetable for when Israeli troops will enter Gaza City, where thousands have taken refuge after fleeing previous offensives. Ismail Al-Thawabta, director general of the Hamas government media office in Gaza, said on Wednesday that 'the Israeli occupation forces continue to carry out aggressive incursions in Gaza City'. 'These assaults represent a dangerous escalation aimed at imposing a new reality on the ground by force, through a scorched-earth policy and the complete destruction of civilian property,' he added.

Police summon father of activist linked to subversive ‘Hong Kong Parliament'

National security police have summoned the father of an activist wanted for his involvement in 'Hong Kong Parliament', a group deemed subversive, to 'assist in an investigation', the Post has learned. A source said that police asked Alan Keung Ka-wai's father to go to Tin Shui Wai Police Station on Wednesday morning to help with the investigation into the Canada-based activist. '[We] expect the investigation to wrap up around noon,' the insider said. Keung is among 15 activists who were slapped with a HK$200,000 (US$25,477) bounty each last month for their involvement in an overseas election organised by the group, which was held in May. Police have earlier accused 'Hong Kong Parliament', founded by wanted self-exiled activists Elmer Yuan Gong-yi, Victor Ho Leung-mau, Fok Ka-chi and Choi Ming-da, of aiming to subvert state power by promoting 'self-determination' and formulating a so-called 'Hong Kong constitution'. The Canada-based activist was also the chairman of the Taiwan-based advocacy group, Hong Kong Democratic Independence Union.

US pressures South Korea to redefine alliance, pivot away from North Korea

The United States has urged South Korea to 'modernise' their bilateral military alliance and ensure a timely response to threats from Pyongyang and beyond the peninsula, in comments seen as pressuring Seoul to shoulder a greater security burden. Advertisement US Forces Korea (USFK) Commander General Xavier Brunson, in his first press conference with local reporters since taking command in December, said modernising the bilateral military alliance was essential to keep it 'ready, relevant and able' to respond to evolving regional threats, such as from China and Russia. 'What's being asked of Korea is to be stronger against the DPRK, that we might have the flexibility as we modernise our alliance so that we could go do other things,' Brunson told journalists on Friday last week, referring to North Korea by the abbreviated form of its official name. He highlighted the 'strategic flexibility' of US troops, citing the rare relocation of a Patriot missile battery from South Korea to the Middle East in April to support operations against Yemen 's Houthi rebels. 'That is strategic flexibility – the ability to be able to place your forces in space and time and need. That is what we seek to always be able to do,' he said.
