20 bikers ride from Bandipur to Bidar to combat drugs in Karnataka
The campaign, taken up under the Union government's initiative through the Department of Social Justice and the Narcotics Control Bureau, is first of its kind under the banner 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan 2025' (Drug-free India).
The riders will pass through Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagara, Bengaluru, Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Hampi, and several other places. They will stop at schools and colleges, where awareness programmes, seminars, and talks will be organised, Principal Secretary to the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department Naveen Raj Singh told TNIE.
The rally to be held from August 29 to 31, will be flagged off at Bandipur by forest officials. NSS, NCC and My Bharat volunteers in each city will join the campaign by forming human chains at popular junctions, distributing pamphlets, and participating in discussions on the dangers of drug abuse.
State NSS Officer Dr Pratap Lingaiah said that the participants have been drawn from different departments and organisations. These include three representatives each from the police, health, forest, NCC, and NSS, along with five from the public.
'All riders have prior experience of long-distance motorcycling, with some having completed journeys of over 2,000 km,' Lingaiah said.
The initiative is the first such long-distance motorcycle rally against drugs in Karnataka, covering the state from its southern tip to the northern border. The rally will conclude in Bidar on August 31.

‘A constable now can have power to change govts, and always of Opposition': Abhishek Singhvi
Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were marked by chaos Wednesday, with members of the ruling and Opposition alliances jostling with each other as Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three Bills with provisions for the removal of Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and ministers arrested on serious criminal charges. Congress Rajya Sabha MP and senior lawyer Abhishek Singhvi, who headed the Parliamentary Committees of Law, Home and Commerce earlier, speaks to The Indian Express on why the Opposition is objecting to the Bills. Excerpts: This is quite an extraordinary enactment and appears to have ulterior motives. Firstly, it relies upon an Executive act which is completely uncertain and arbitrary – namely arrest – to change the will of the people with respect to an elected minister, CM or PM. There is no Legislative determination of the act of arrest, and it is left to the whims and caprice of Executive authorities and biased agencies. One such act… will have disastrous consequences for democracy… Secondly, there is complete lack of synchronization because the Legislature already prescribes how and when elected representatives should be disqualified. The Representation of the People Act puts a definite act of conviction as the standard criterion… There is a large element of judicial adjudication involved in any such conviction, which then triggers disqualification. In the proposed enactment, the mere act of a police officer either acting wrongly or acting in a biased manner (frequently under instructions from his political masters) generates very serious consequences for elected representatives. While superficially the amendments seem balanced and non-discriminatory, they are actually biased and one-sided even in their concept and design. It is inconceivable that the police force or the feared CBI, Enforcement Directorate and other similar agencies will act in any such manner when it comes to a ruling party minister or PM… It is clearly intended as the worst form of destabilisation of elected governments, and only of Opposition… You simply need to arrest an individual or collectivity of ministers or indeed the CM, with no determination of guilt, no framing of charges, not even the filing of a chargesheet, and disastrous consequences for an Opposition government can be created – patently contrary to the will of those who elected them. It is also intended as a perfect recipe to encourage and engineer defections… Even without such ridiculous provisions as now proposed, we have seen how governments have been made and unmade by the BJP in several states, and this adds a dangerously potent, additional tool in their hands. The period of 30 days is not only ridiculously low but involves not even the vestige of any adjudicatory process. It is the mere arrest of any minister by anyone. The person may come out on the 45th or the 60th or the 90th day, the arrest may be found to be completely illegal and wrong. It is not enough to say then that the person can be reinstated as minister or CM. The entire destabilisation, chaos and confusion to change the government would already have been achieved. I have no doubt that the Bills would be struck down as unconstitutional and violative of several Articles of the Constitution, including but not limited to Articles 14, 19 and 21. It appears to be a mindless law conceived in haste and delivered with ulterior motives. I hope and trust that the Bills are struck down if at all passed. But I hope that more likely they will not be passed. They clearly violate the basic structure and federalism. The former because they hit at the root of the mandate of the people through the power of Executive arrest. The latter because they will essentially target only Opposition ministers and CMs… The reference to the PM is laughable. Does anyone in his right senses really believe that the PM of a country will be arrested by agencies of the ruling dispensation? It is insulting to the intelligence of the people… (so as) to give a veneer of equality and non-discrimination. I agree with it a hundred percent. The Bills turn on their head the presumption of innocence. Arrest for a mere 30 days is no proof of guilt of any kind. We all know of the large number of arbitrary, politically motivated and biased arrests. If the party to which the arrestee belongs or the people of his region do not want the arrestee to be out of power, what business does the police officer have to put him out of power? In a nutshell, this is a fantastic new technique entrusting a police constable with the power to alter and change incumbent governments, incumbent CMs and ministers, but only and always of the Opposition alone.

Lok Sabha passes Bill to outlaw online gambling-betting, government prioritises society over revenue
New Delhi [India], August 20 (ANI): Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, aiming to promote e-sports and online social games, while outlawing online money gaming. The Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha earlier today. The Bill was brought in to encourage e-sports and online social games while prohibiting harmful online money gaming services, advertisements, and financial transactions related to them. The Bill seeks to completely ban on offering, operating, or facilitating online money games, irrespective of whether based on skill, chance, or both. "When it comes to society, middle-class people, or a segment of industry. When it comes to society and the government revenue, our prime minister has always chosen the society. Never have we compromised on the interest of the society," Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said, requesting the House, particularly the Opposition members, to unanimously pass the Bill in the Lok Sabha. Opposition members continued raising their slogans, as the Bill was passed by voice vote. "Online gaming has three segments. First is e-sports which needs strategic thinking, team building, enhances cultural segment is online social games, be it Solitaire, Chess, Sudoku. They are educative and entertaining. They are widely played," Vaishnaw further said. "There is a third segment, online money game, which is a cause of concern in the society. There are people, there are families who got addicted to online money games. They lose their hard-earned money. Algorithms are sometimes such that it is different to know with whom you are playing. Algorithms are opaque." "Many families have been devastated, many died by suicide," the minister said. Online money game is seriously affecting families, terror being financed, money being laundered. There will be no punishment for those playing online money games; it is only the service providers, advertisers, promoters, and those who financially support such games will face the consequences, said sources. "No punishment for those playing online games. No punishment to victims. Only punishment for service providers, advertisers, promoters and who support financially to such games," a source said on Wednesday. Through this legislation, the government aims to promote e-sports and give them legal recognition. This bill will help in providing legal support to e-sports. Earlier, there was no legal backing for e-sports, sources said. "We have interacted with the 3rd segment of the online gaming industry. We tried to impose GST also, but the challenge continued. We had no option but to choose society for the welfare of people," a source said. For the promotion of e-sports, which has been recognised as a legitimate form of competitive sport in India, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will establish a dedicated framework. Online social games will also be promoted by the government. It is the online money game, according to sources, that is a big problem for society. Several reports of suicide, violent attacks and other challenges were reported, the sources added. "Fraud and cheating are happening through these games and several families are ruined." The government believes that the harms of addiction, financial losses, and even extreme consequences such as suicides associated with online money gaming can be prevented by prohibition of such activities. There are reports of money laundering and terror financing, the sources added. Failing to fulfil the law, once enacted, can attract imprisonment up to 3 years and/or fine up to ₹ 1 crore for offering or facilitating online money gaming. For advertising money games, and imprisonment up to 2 years and/or fine up to ₹ 50 lakh may be attracted. for financial transactions related to money games, imprisonment up to 3 years and/or fine up to ₹ 1 crore is being provided. Any repeat offences may attract enhanced penalties, including imprisonment of 3-5 years and fines up to ₹ 2 crore. Offences under key sections to be cognizable and non-bailable. The central government may authorise officers to investigate, search, and seize digital or physical property linked to offences, and officers would be empowered to enter, search, and arrest without warrant in certain cases of suspected offences.
