'Unbelievable': Cricket world erupts over 'courageous' scenes in historic Test drama
Injured England bowler Chris Woakes has earnt praise around the cricket world after a courageous decision to bat on a tense final day of the fifth Test against India at The Oval, that saw the tourists snatch history in the most dramatic fashion. India - led by the impressive Mohammed Siraj - took four wickets in the final hour to help bowl England out for 367 and seal an astonishing six-run victory that left the cricket world in disbelief. The win was the narrowest in India's Test cricket history and saw one of the most gripping series of recent memory finish at 2-2. England began a drizzly final morning of an enthralling five-Test series needing just 35 wins to clinch a 3-1 series victory with four wickets in hand, but Siraj led the way for India as the hosts were denied in extraordinary fashion. Siraj was on fire on the final day, taking the wickets of Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton, before bowling Gus Atkinson to complete a five-wicket-haul and completely a scarcely believable win. When Prasidh Krishna sent Josh Tongue packing without troubling the scorers, it saw Woakes walk out to the crease in one of the bravest and more remarkable scenes that will live long in the memory. Woakes was wearing a sling tucked underneath his jumper after dislocating his shoulder while fielding during the Test match, but showed his dedication to the England cause by walking out to face the fired-up India attack one-handed. England still needed 17 runs to complete victory and Gus Atkinson did everything he could to protect his teammate by keeping him off strike. Atkinson belted Siraj for six to see England close in on their victory target. But with an epic Test series win in England's sight, the tail-ender was undone by a superb yorker from Siraj that clattered into the stumps and sealed India's historic win, sparking wild scenes at The Oval and leaving cricket fans in awe of one of the great Test cricket spectacles. "With 60, 70-odd runs to win with seven wickets in hand you don't get to see many games like this," India captain Shubman Gill said after his side's against-the-odds victory. "Very happy to get this over the line, a little bit of luck for us." Cricket world in awe of courageous Chris Woakes display It was fitting that Siraj was the hero for India with his five-wicket haul in the final innings after he squandered a chance to remove England centurion Harry Brook for 19 on day four, in an error that proved very costly. But as incredible as Siraj's heroics were on the final day, it was the sight of Woakes coming out to bat in a sling that left an indelible mark on viewers and saw the England quick's courage celebrated around the cricket world. Respect For my Man Chris Woakes ❤️🫶#ENGvIND #ENGvsIND #INDvsENG — Kannada 💛❤️ Cityzen 💙 (@Kavirajamarga21) August 4, 2025 This Test had it all ❤️ pressure, passion, pain, and pride!🙏M Siraj mind-blowing 5-wicket spell turned the game🔥Woakes showed unreal courage, batting with a broken shoulder for the team.🫡India held on for a 6-run win. Unbelievable stuff #ENGvIND — Davis "LIONS" Harrigan (Digi) 🦁 (@DeadlineDavis) August 4, 2025 Unbreakable spirit. All heart ❤️Chris Woakes walks out to bat for England 🙌 #WTC27 #ENGvIND — Prikshit Natu (@PrikshitNatu29) August 4, 2025 Ben Stokes proud of England despite heartbreaking loss More than 7000 runs were scored in the five Tests, but when England needed fewer than 50 for the final five wickets, they faltered. The last time that happened to them in a fourth innings while chasing victory was in 1902, against Australia at Old Trafford. But England captain Ben Stokes - who was ruled out of the fifth Test with injury after being his side's most effective bowler of the series - praised his side's injury-ravaged pace attack. England were also deprived of Jofra Archer to go with Woakes' dislocated shoulder and Stokes said he was proud to run India so close in the end. "When one of your bowlers goes down so early in the game, the role of the other seamers changes," the England skipper said. "Even in the second innings, the heart and desire they showed was amazing. There were many what-ifs in the last five days, makes the game great, but all (coach) Brendon (McCullum) and I asked was to give it everything. (Josh) Tongue, (Gus) Atkinson and (Jamie) Overton showed it." England v India: Three talking points
India will return home satisfied after levelling their five-Test series against England following a dramatic six-run win at the Oval as the home side rue a costly late collapse. The tourists came back from the dead in the deciding match, taking the last seven England wickets for just 66 runs to finish the series all-square at 2-2. India arguably won more sessions than they lost over the five Tests, though England were clinical in key moments before failing to press home their advantage in the final match. AFP Sport picks out three talking points from an enthralling series. Siraj steps up as India's main man Mohammed Siraj ultimately proved the difference-maker for India, taking three wickets for nine runs in a match-winning spell on the final morning at the Oval. The paceman was named player of the match for his figures of nine wickets for 190 runs. Over the course of the series, in which he played every game, Siraj bowled an energy-sapping 185.3 overs, finishing as the leading wicket-taker on either side, with 23 scalps. India made it clear before the series that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah would only play three Tests and stayed true to their word, leaving the world's top-ranked bowler out of the final game. But Siraj ultimately made sure the tourists did not miss him at the Oval. "When I woke up today (Monday), I thought I could do it. I downloaded a picture from Google saying 'believe'," said Siraj. Gill shines with the bat as he learns captaincy ropes Shubman Gill has just embarked on one of the toughest jobs in world sport -- leading a team that carries with it the hopes and dreams of 1.4 billion people. He has been mesmerising with the bat in England, falling just short of overhauling Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing Indian record tally of 774 runs in a series. India's player-of-the-series has also grown into his role as skipper and oversaw a victory in the final Test when all had seemed lost. The 25-year-old, who replaced Rohit Sharma as captain in May, arrived in England with a modest Test average of 35. But he has led from the front to make 754 runs, including four centuries, finishing just 20 runs behind Gavaskar's mark, set against the West Indies in 1971. Gill combines elegant, classical batting with an ability to go through the gears when necessary. This was most eye-catchingly showcased at Edgbaston, where he scored a majestic 269 in the first innings and a turbo-charged 161 in the second. Gill's batting in England will live long in the memory and his reign as captain is off to a solid start. Stokes still England's magic man Ben Stokes sat out the fifth Test victory with a shoulder injury but has again demonstrated emphatically the value of a genuine all-rounder in the modern game. The England skipper, 34, consistently looked the most dangerous of the home side's bowlers, taking 17 wickets at 25 in 140 overs -- the most he has ever bowled in a series. He also played a crucial role with the bat, scoring 141 in England's mammoth total of 669 in the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford. England's bowling at times lacked penetration during the series but Stokes still possesses the rare ability to change a game in the blink of an eye. The skipper has battled a succession of injuries but England will be desperate to have him on the plane to Australia for the Ashes, which start in November. Express paceman Jofra Archer made a welcome return to the Test arena against India but played just two matches and his workload is being managed carefully. Mark Wood, another bowler with genuine pace, has not played Test cricket for nearly 12 months and had knee surgery earlier this year. jw/jdg/ea

‘Love Island UK's Whitney Responds to Lochan's Denial on TikTok
First JaNa Craig and Kenny Rodriguez, now Lochan Nowacki and Whitney Adebayo—it's a rough time to be a Love Island alum (and a reality TV fan). Months after announcing their split, Love Island UK season 10 runners up Whitney and Lochan are making headlines after Whitney accused Lochan of calling her skin 'dirty.' Now, they're both telling their sides of the story on TikTok, and I think it's safe to a lot. This all started Friday, Aug. 1, when Whitney posted a TikTok hopping on the 'You look happier' trend. Sharing pics from her beachside vacation, she added, 'Thanks! I finally fell in love with my skin he used to call dirty.' Fans immediately began speculating that this was a thinly-veiled jab at Lochan, a suspicion later confirmed by Whitney's sister. According to reports, Whitney's sister, Liz (@lizbrowns), shared screenshots of a text chain with Lochan from August of 2024, in which he seemingly admits, 'I never said it thinking her skin is dirty, I feel sick I crossed line with joke but she said she can't look at me the same.' The screenshotted text exchange doesn't give much context, but Liz added her own commentary, saying that she was providing 'evidence' for those doubting her sister. 'I know what she went through and the fact that it took this long for her to heal and share her truth to be shamed is vile,' she wrote in part. 'As women we've all stayed in situations that didn't serve us, but when you get out that's when you really start to become a woman. Be kind and give grace.' Lochan responded with a video on Sunday, telling his side of the story. According to Lochan, he and Whitney were on a walk by his apartment when the incident occurred last summer. 'She had gotten her nails done and she, annoyingly, put her nails in my face and was like, 'My hands are so clean. Yours aren't.' I was like, 'No, they're not,' and I was annoyed her hands were in my face.' Lochan continued, claiming that he felt he was just making a joke. 'She looked at me in shock and said, 'You're calling me dirty?' I was taken aback by that,' he said. 'I felt insulted that my girlfriend, who I loved, who knows me and knows that I would never insinuate something like that, is calling me a racist.' In his five-minute video, Lochan also shared texts he claims are from Liz. 'Honestly I don't even need to know the context or conversation to assure that I know you're not racist, Loch,' she allegedly wrote, suggesting that she did not know the full context when sending the text. Lochan continued, saying that he had talks with Whitney's family, in part because Whitney was threatening expose him, saying, 'The world is going to see you for the racist you really are.' He added that the accusations that he would call her skin dirty were particularly 'devastating' for him as a multiracial man, noting that his mother is Indian. After Lochan's video went live, Whitney came back with a TikTok of her own, recalling her version of events. 'I was in the sun, and I was like, 'Babe, look how my skin glistens in the sun.' And he looked at me and was like, 'Ugh, it's dirty.' And then only when I lashed out, he was like, 'It was a joke, it was a joke,'' she said. Whitney claimed that Lochan was crying and immediately started calling her family members to insist that he meant no harm. 'Because he gives off, like, this golden retriever energy, no one would believe he would ever say it maliciously,' she explained. The two broke up after the incident, but later reconciled—a cycle she claimed they would repeat over the course of their two-year relationship. Not only that, but Whitney claimed that she endured many not-so-micro aggressions throughout, including a recurring bit from Lochlan's mother who would tell her to 'smile' so she could see her in the dark. She also accused him of being a 'culture vulture,' essentially using her for clout while 'condoning' his friends who used the N-word and calling her 'ghetto' and 'too loud.' Her final message to Lochan? 'You didn't love me, you loved what I could give you until I could no longer give it to you. So please stop lying, Lochan, please.' Lochan has yet to respond.
