'The janitor made more than me.'
Diana Taurasi may go down as arguably the most accomplished player in the history of women's basketball, but she certainly wasn't paid like it over the course of her 20 WNBA seasons.
Taurasi officially retired this February after a two-decade long run with the Phoenix Mercury where she left the game a three-time champion, a league MVP, a five-time scoring champ and the WNBA's all-time leader in points (10,646) and three-pointers made (1,447).
Now as the star of a three-episode docuseries recounting her incredible hoops career, Taurasi was very upfront about the compensation she saw (or didn't see, really) along her professional journey.
"The f—ing janitor at the arena made more than me," Diana said in a teaser released by Amazon Prime on Wednesday.
"I'm the best player in the world and I have to go to a communist country to get paid like a capitalist," she added. "We weren't making that much money, so generational wealth was coming from going to Russia every year. Now we have to come back home and get paid nothing, to play in a harder league, in worse conditions, against the best competition in the world."
If that wasn't enough, the two-time Finals MVP also talked about the emotional toll it took being away from her family for that many months out of the year.
"One time I came back and I was like, 'Man, my parents have just gotten older and I've missed a big part of it,'" Taurasi revealed.
Diana said that she quit spending her offseasons overseas back in 2017, but knows that much of the league's players still do what they have to do to get by. Taurasi made roughly $235,000 in her final WNBA season and hopes that the league's salaries only go up amid the current CBA negotiations.
At this year's All-Star Game, the participating ladies wore shirts that said "Pay Us What You Owe Us" which received quite a bit of attention online.
The revenue share in the WNBA is nowhere near as even as other major sports leagues, but given the hot streak its currently on right now it's hard to imagine that number won't go up fairly significantly once a deal gets struck.
Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell is currently the highest-paid player in the league by annual salary at $249,244 per year — just ahead of Vegas' Jewell Loyd, Dallas' Arike Ogunbowale and Phoenix's Kahleah Copper.

Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson shine for Steelers in preseason opener

Aaron Rodgers recently said "preseason football is not necessarily real football." And he's right. Still, in August, preseason football is the closest thing we have to real football. And, on Saturday night, the two Steelers quarterbacks who played against the Jaguars did a pretty good job playing not necessarily real football. With Mason Rudolph taking only 15 snaps and Skylar Thompson handling 51, both performed very well. Rudolph, who got the start, completed nine of 10 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Passer rating? 135.0. With rookie Will Howard injured, Thompson handled the rest of the game. He completed 20 of 28 passes, generating 233 yards and three touchdown passes. Rating? 132.0. "Good to be back in the black and gold, man," Rudolph said after the game in a one-question press conference. (It was one more question than coach Mike Tomlin got.) Ideally, neither Rudolph nor Thompson (nor Howard) will handle anything more than garbage time this season. But maybe, if one or more of them are needed to play, the cause won't already be lost.

‘Helluva Boss' Team Breaches Tumblr Containment With ‘Homestuck' Animated Series

The most online of people likely remember Homestuck, Andrew Hussie's internet fiction series. After Hussie ended the webcomic in 2016, loyal fans have kept it alive with various side projects and Hussie's occasional guidance. Now, it's getting its biggest side project yet in the form of an animated series. Or rather, the pilot for one. This comes courtesy of Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano and her animation company Spindlehorse, and with some well-known voice talent attached. Video game and anime voice actors Cherami Leigh (Cyberpunk 2077), Adam McArthur (Jujutsu Kaisen), and Brandon Winkler are onboard, ditto Tails' longtime actor Colleen O'Shaughnessey, voice director Richard Horvitz (who already does voice work for Spindlehorse's Helluva Boss), and Undertale creator Toby Fox. Before he made Undertale and Deltarune, Fox made his name doing music for Homestuck's animated sections back in the day. Check them and the pilot out below. For those not in the know, Hussie launched Homestuck in 2009 as one of several series he made developed in MS Paint. Plot-wise, it focuses on John Egbert (Fox), a kid who gets a beta copy of a computer game called Sburb for his 13th birthday present. When he learns it lets him manipulate reality, John enlists his friends Rose (Leigh), Dave (McArthur), and Jade (O'Shaughnessey) to join him, which ends up putting their universe in danger and forces them to beat the game in order to create a new one. It gained a huge following online back in the day, resulting in hardcover collections, an epilogue series, and the episodic adventure game Hiveswap. Expect the Homestuck pilot to hit YouTube in September. At time of writing, it's unclear if it could become its own series; Medrano entered a first look deal with Prime Video this past spring, so it's not impossible. Want more io9 news?
