Alex Bregman Predicted To Betray Red Sox After Resurgent Season, Leave For $128M Deal
The Boston Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal last offseason. His deal gives him the ability to opt out after this season.
With Rafael Devers gone, the Red Sox have the money to pay Bregman. He and his agent have reportedly noted they are open to an extension, but the closer Bregman gets to free agency, the more reason he has to wait and see what the open market offers him.
Bregman was a two-time All-Star for the Houston Astros. However, he had not played at that same level since 2019. He was still a great player, though, playing a huge role in the Astros' continued success. This season, he found that previous All-Star form and was named to the All-Star Game for the third time in his career.

Bregman has slashed .293/.366/.535 through 67 games with the Red Sox. From 2020 through 2024, he slashed .261/.350/.445. He should have plenty of suitors in free agency, and the Red Sox may not actually need him as badly as many think.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller predicted Bregman would leave the Red Sox in favor of a four-year, $128 million deal with the Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox will still be in the mix to keep him, but they do have the pieces in place to move forward without him.
"Then again, with Marcelo Mayer now in the mix and Trevor Story not going anywhere in the next few years, Boston might be reluctant enough to increase its investment to allow [someone] else to swoop in," wrote Miller.
Mayer is going to be a big part of the team's future. They could slot him in at second base moving forward, but that would create a problem for Kristian Campbell, who has already signed an extension with the team.
The Tigers have been linked to Bregman since the offseason. They were unable to land him last winter, but may be able to get him this year.

Phillies' Kyle Schwarber looming in National League MVP race as Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani struggle

A new contender is creeping into the 2025 National League MVP race. After sitting atop the odds board all season, Shohei Ohtani suddenly has some competition in Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, who has been red-hot of late. Ohtani is down to -400 to win the award at FanDuel Sportsbook – the lowest he's been in months – while Schwarber is lurking at +300. Schwarber has 15 home runs in his last 30 games, which is three more than any hitter in baseball in that span, catapulting him into the award race. Overall, this season, Schwarber has an NL-leading 40 long balls – two more than Ohtani – while hitting .256/.379/.585. Schwarber's dominant stretch – and the Mets' struggles – have helped boost the Phillies to the top of the NL East, holding on to a 2.5-game lead before Wednesday's slate. Meanwhile, Ohtani hasn't been his otherworldly self over that same 30-game stretch, hitting nine homers while slashing .233/.346/.491, which is a significant step down from his first half of the season. Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani smiles after grounding out during the second inning at the MLB baseball All-Star game between the American League and National League, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Atlanta. AP Ohtani has also made just two starts on the mound since the All-Star break after leaving his last start in late July with cramping, although he is scheduled to toss four innings against the Cardinals on Wednesday. Perhaps most importantly, the Dodgers haven't played well of late. Since July 1, they are just 13-16 and are hanging on to just a three-game lead in the NL West over the Padres despite coming into the season with some of the highest expectations for a team in recent history. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting Last week, we pointed out Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong as a potential challenger to Ohtani for the NL MVP. But award races can change quickly, and oddsmakers have Schwarber as the one most likely to threaten Ohtani's chances at a fourth MVP in five seasons. Roman Anthony, Boston Red Sox Reportedly Agree to Mammoth 8-Year Extension
It took 46 games for the Boston Red Sox to determine that Roman Anthony should be a prominent figure in their future. Anthony and the Red Sox have agreed to an eight-year, $130 million extension, ESPN reported on Wednesday. The contract keeps Anthony in Boston through 2034, includes a club option in the final year of the deal and could be worth as much as $230 million. The 21-year-old outfielder, who had been considered the top prospect in MLB, made his big-league debut in June. To date, the left-handed-hitting Anthony has totaled two home runs and 19 RBIs, while boasting a .283/.400/.428 slash line. He has started at both corner outfield positions, primarily right field, while also making 13 starts as the team's designated hitter. The Red Sox selected Anthony with the No. 79 pick in the 2022 MLB Draft out of high school. He began the 2025 season in Triple-A, after first reaching the level in August 2024. The Red Sox are 64-51, good for the No. 1 AL wild-card seed; they're three games back of the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the American League East. Boston has won seven consecutive games and went on a 10-game winning streak prior to the MLB All-Star break. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Bengals' Shemar Stewart reveals key thing Trey Hendrickson taught him
For Cincinnati Bengals first-round rookie Shemar Stewart, the remainder of the summer is about refining his craft while he adapts to the program. With the contract impasse a thing of the past and Trey Hendrickson attending practice and helping out his teammates, Stewart has made sure to absorb as much information as possible. Right out of the gates after Hendrickson reported to the team, Stewart got a key nugget from the All-Pro, according to Geoff Hobson of "You want to be all extended when you make some kind of contact with O-linemen. If it's not, and he reaches you, your rush is basically over. Make sure your arms are fully extended before making contact with the offensive line." … RELATED: Shemar Stewart contract details cast Bengals holdout in strange light Billed as a project prospect, the biggest criticism of Stewart out of college was his lack of production as a pass-rusher and apparent lack of moves to help him get to opposing passers. Only live action will show fans if those concerns were misguided, but Bengals coaches have repeatedly beat the drum about his rare combination of size and athleticism that will help him play three downs all over the line. One guarantee? Stewart couldn't do much better than Hendrickson as a mentor, if at all. RELATED: Trey Hendrickson tells all on contract standoff with Bengals
