Women's Rugby World Cup: 5 stars to watch out for
Claudia Pena

The Spain international enjoyed a fantastic debut season in Premiership Women's Rugby with Harlequins this season. The 20-year-old centre joined Quins from Barcelona at the start of the season and went on to score eight tries in 13 appearances. Pena will be looking to carry on from that stellar season with Spain, who are ranked 13th in the world and face a tricky group with clashes against New Zealand, Ireland and Japan.
Sisilia Tuipulotu

Tuipulotu has returned to the Wales team in time to compete in her second World Cup. The ball-carrying prop missed the Six Nations after undergoing hamstring surgery, but returned for Wales' warm-up series against Australia, which they drew 1-1. World Cups are a family affair for Tuipulotu after her father Sione played at the men's 1999 and 2007 editions.
Braxton Sorensen-McGee
Still only 18 years old, New Zealand's Sorensen-McGee has quickly become a much talked about talent. The full-back stood out in her first season of Super Rugby Aupiki, where she scored four tries during the competition and helped the Blues win the final against Matatu. She then made her Black Ferns debut against Australia on May 10 and made an instant impression, scoring two tries and subsequently earned a maiden World Cup call-up.

Another young talent aiming to make her mark on the World Cup is 18-year-old Australia full-back Halse. The teenager made her Super Rugby Women's debut aged 16 and in the process became the joint-youngest NSW Waratahs player to do so. Halse became the youngest debutant for either the men's or women's Australia teams in May 2024 when she played against the United States and has so far earned 11 caps for the Wallaroos.
Abby Dow

With 54 caps to her name, Dow will be aiming to continue her impressive year at her second World Cup. The England winger is a crucial part of a formidable back three, which includes Ellie Kildunne and Jess Breach for Friday's opener against the United States. Dow comes into the tournament on the back of a successful Six Nations campaign, where she finished top of the try-scorers list with six tries as England were crowned victors.

England name former captain Heather Knight in Women's World Cup squad
Knight has not played since damaging her hamstring in May but takes her place in a 15-strong squad for the tournament in India and Sri Lanka, which runs from September 30 to November 2. With conditions on the sub-continent set to offer turn, head coach Charlotte Edwards has included four specialist spinners. Here it is, your Cricket World Cup squad heading to India & Sri-Lanka! 👏 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) August 21, 2025 Sophie Ecclestone, Linsey Smith and Charlie Dean are joined by leg-spinner Sarah Glenn, who had been overlooked for the recent series against India but is now set for her first 50-over World Cup. She effectively takes the place of Cross, who is edged out of a reduced pace lineup. Danni Wyatt-Hodge is also back after losing her place in the ODI setup after last winter's Ashes defeat, while Maia Bouchier and Alice Davidson-Richards have missed the cut. 'Conditions mean we have gone for the extra spinner and we're lucky to be able to have such depth in this department, it's fantastic to welcome Sarah Glenn back,' said Edwards, who took over from Jon Lewis earlier this year. 'That does mean there's no room for Kate Cross, Maia Bouchier or Alice Davidson-Richards, which will be disappointing for them. 'It's also great to have Danni back in the squad, she's been in good form in domestic cricket and she'll bring dynamism and depth to our batting, alongside Heather, who we are absolutely delighted to be able to select. She'll be a huge asset for us.' Edwards, who was appointed to lift a side who had slumped badly towards the end of Lewis' tenure and flopped at last year's T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, spoke optimistically about the challenge ahead. 'Like all global tournaments, it will be a huge challenge but we want to go as far as we possibly can in India and Sri Lanka and I believe that if we play our best cricket we can compete with anyone,' she said. 'As a group we have a huge opportunity to go and do something special. ODI World Cups are the pinnacle of our sport. They only come around every four years and we're so excited to get over there to start our preparation.' In all there are nine survivors from the last World Cup campaign in 2022, when England were beaten in the final by Australian, and just four who lifted the trophy at Lord's in 2017. They are Knight, Wyatt-Hodge, Tammy Beaumont and current skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt. England squad for Women's T20 World Cup: N Sciver-Brunt (c), E Arlott, T Beaumont, L Bell, A Capsey, C Dean, S Dunkley, S Ecclestone, L Filer, S Glenn, A Jones (wk), H Knight, E Lamb, L Smith, D Wyatt-Hodge.

Tottenham stung by Arsenal again after star was offered Spurs contract only to join Gunners
There is precedent for Arsenal pipping north London rivals Tottenham to a transfer target's signature at the 11th hour as they look to pull off a £68million coup for Eberechi Eze Arsenal's brutal hijacking of Eberechi Eze's Tottenham move is not the first time the Gunners have signed a player just as they were about to join their bitter rivals. Mikel Arteta's side are set to sign the 27-year-old from Crystal Palace after it emerged they had agreed terms with both club and player on Wednesday night. The breakthrough came as a surprise, given that north London neighbours Spurs had been on the brink of signing Eze. But those close to the England midfielder knew that his heart was truly set on Arsenal. Eze supported the Gunners as a boy and was released from their academy aged 13, which left him 'bawling'. Arsenal will now look to complete his £68million transfer in the coming days, having initially held reservations over the deal due to the rise of academy starlet Ethan Nwaneri. But Kai Havertz's recent injury eventually swayed them into pursuing potentially their seventh signing of the summer. Eze's dramatic U-turn, swapping N17 for N5, is of course not a first. Many will recall Sol Campbell's shock move as a free agent in 2001. But another Gunners legend, Emmanuel Petit, snubbed Spurs for Arsenal in a way more akin to Eze's transfer saga. Spurs famously paid the Frenchman's taxi fare on his way to sign for Arsenal. And reflecting on the late change of heart back in 2018, Petit told Mirror Football: ' Tottenham put the contract on the table for me, I needed a couple of days to think about it but they didn't expect what happened after that." The midfielder visited London in 1997 to speak to Spurs chairman Sir Alan Sugar about a potential move from Monaco. Arsenal found out about the meeting and quickly sent word to the midfielder to not sign anything until he had heard Arsene Wenger 's pitch about the new project he was building. Petit, who had played under Wenger at Monaco, asked Sugar for time to mull things over back at his own hotel, with Spurs paying the taxi to drive him there. But the Frenchman diverted the cab to Wenger's house, where he also met vice-chairman David Dein. Keen to compete for titles instead of fighting to stave off relegation, the future World Cup winner signed a £3.5m deal with the Gunners. Petit later recalled on talkSPORT: 'I had meetings on the same day with Tottenham and Arsenal and had a meeting with Tottenham in the morning, but when I came to England I didn't know about the rivalry between the two clubs. "When I left the Spurs stadium, they booked me a cab and the cab driver asked me for directions, so I gave him the Arsenal address and I didn't realise that the cab was pre-paid by Spurs, so they knew where I was going! "I'd told Spurs that I needed time to think about it but knew that I had to see Arsenal, as well as other clubs in Italy and Spain. I told everyone that I'd make my mind up and when I knew the answer I would give it, but after a couple of days I signed for Arsenal and it went into newspapers and all of a sudden the story came. I realised the pressure of the rivalry then.' Petit added in 2018: "It's part of the legend now. David Dein still loves that story – and [more than] 20 years later he's still telling it!' He did not look back on his decision, forming a formidable midfield axis with France team-mate Patrick Vieira, which resulted in the pony-tail haired star winning a league and cup double in his first season. After the success of the 1997/98 campaign, Petit spent two less successful years in north London before joining Barcelona and later Chelsea. Eze will hope his bold decision will reap similar benefits as he looks to add the missing creative spark to Arteta's side, with the Gunners hoping to get over the line this term after three successive years of finishing second.
