'We're Encouraged': Louisiana Commission Schedules Meeting With Fair Grounds Race Dates On Agenda

'We're Encouraged': Louisiana Commission Schedules Meeting With Fair Grounds Race Dates On Agenda originally appeared on Paulick Report.
Late on Monday, June 16, the Louisiana State Racing Commission issued a notice scheduling a meeting for Tuesday, June 24. The agenda includes a line item for the Churchill Downs, Inc.-owned Fair Grounds entitled: "Racing Calendar for the 2025-2026 Thoroughbred meet."
According to several sources, a "productive" meeting discussing the potential for a 2025-2026 race meet at the New Orleans, La., racetrack took place between horsemen and CDI officials on Monday.
Ed Fenasci, executive director of the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, said: "Nothing to announce yet, but we're encouraged by our discussions thus far and look forward to the best meet we can have."

The uncertainty surrounding the 2025-2026 meet began when CDI CEO Bill Carstanjen wrote to the Louisiana State Racing Commission on June 9 stating the company's intention to surrender its racing license to run a live meet at Fair Grounds in 2025-'26. Carstanjen also said the company expected to surrender its slots and video poker license.
The move by CDI came after the state Supreme Court ruled legislatively approved historical horse racing (HHR) at Fair Grounds OTBs was unconstitutional and required approval in local referendums. An attorney for CDI told the racing commission at an emergency meeting in May that the situation was "dire" because of the loss of revenue from HHR wagering, and that a Fair Grounds meet would not be held this year without some form of legislative assistance.
Last Thursday, in the waning hours of the 2025 regular session which ended June 12, state legislators in Louisiana advanced a bill designed to prevent CDI from shuttering the Fair Grounds facility and ending live horse racing. The amendment to Senate Bill 195 designates New Orleans track as an "historic site," and states that "demolition, structural alteration, sale or cessation of racing operations" can only occur with legislative approval.

Diego Velazquez Wins Thriller In Prix Jacques Le Marois

Diego Velazquez Wins Thriller In Prix Jacques Le Marois originally appeared on Paulick Report. Diego Velazquez (IRE) held off late-charging Notable Speech to win the €1,000,000 Aga Khan Studs Prix Jacques Le Marois (G1) on Sunday at Deauville in France. In the final furlong, the 4-year-old Frankel colt took the lead from Dancing Gemini and held off the late run from Notable Speech, who came flying down the inside after being stuck behind slowing runners but was denied by a nose. Ridden by Christophe Soumillon and trained by Aidan O'Brien, Diego Velazquez completed the flat mile on turf in 1:34.23. With the win, Diego Velazquez stamped himself as a horse to watch for the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) in Nov. 1 at Del Mar. Last year, he made the trip to the seaside track for the Mile but was scratched by his connections the day before the race. 'We were half thinking about seeing how today went, possibly going to Keeneland (for the Coolmore Turf Mile [G1]), which is a 'Win & You're In', but we're in now,' owner Sam Sangster told Sky Sports. 'I'll entirely leave that up to Aidan.' Charlie Appleby, trainer of runner-up Notable Speech, was pleased with the colt's courageous effort and has tentatively mapped out the rest of the year for the Godolphin homebred. 'We're delighted with how the horse ran. Of course it's frustrating to be beaten by so little, but the most important thing is to see him back to his best. The mile is his optimum trip,' said Appleby. 'We tried dropping him back last time; sometimes you need to experiment. We'll probably go to Canada for the ('Win & You're In') Woodbine Mile (G1) (Sept. 13) and then head to the Breeders' Cup.' Diego Velazquez, bred by Epona Bloodstock from the Acclamation (GB) mare Sweepstake. He was a $2,886,243 purchase by Coolmore's M. V. Magnier and U.S.-based Peter Brant of White Birch Farm at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, where he was cataloged in the prestigious Book 1. Sam Sangster is the son of the late Robert Sangster, one of the founders of racing and breeding powerhouse Coolmore. Diego Velazquez has six wins from 11 career starts, and it was announced last week that he will retire to the National Stud in Ireland at the end of the year. 'Doing Excellent': Sierra Leone Returns To Work Tab At Saratoga

'Doing Excellent': Sierra Leone Returns To Work Tab At Saratoga originally appeared on Paulick Report. Grade 1 Whitney winner and reigning Champion 3-Year-Old Colt Sierra Leone returned to the work tab Saturday at Saratoga, breezing a half-mile over the main track in :48.80 to the inside of Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial hopeful Chancer McPatrick. 'He did great with a little maintenance work and couldn't have done it better,' trainer ChadBrown said of Sierra Leone. 'He's doing excellent. He's held his weight well and he's moving great.' Brown noted Sierra Leone is still on target for the Grade 1, $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup on August 31 at the Spa, which will serve as a prep for a return to Del Mar to defend his title in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic in November. Chancer McPatrick, last-out winner of the Curlin, will cut back in distance for the seven-furlong Allen Jerkens on the Travers undercard. The son of McKinzie is already a Grade 1 winner over course and distance after taking last year's Hopeful. Brown also sent out the multiple Grade 1-winning pair of Randomized and Raging Sea to work a half-mile over the main track in :48 1/5 in preparation for the Grade 1, $500,000 Personal Ensign on the Travers undercard. The former is coming off a win in the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher on July 19 at Monmouth Park while the latter seeks to successfully defend her title in this event on the heels of local third-place efforts in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps presented by Ford and the Grade 2 Shuvee last out on July 18. 'More of the same from them,' Brown said. 'They both worked well and they're both on target for the Ensign.'
