AI vs. human beings: do we have any lasting advantage?

Last Thursday's announcement of OpenAI's new ChatGPT agent, which creates spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations, deepens the concern that AI will replace large numbers of white-collar jobs. Do knowledge workers have any lasting advantage over AI? This is an important question, and particularly for educators, who need to know how to prepare students for durable career success.
Gian Segato, of the AI company Replit, has a convincing answer: 'It's no longer as important to know how to do something. It's knowing that it needs to be done and then just doing it.' AI appears to be highly effective at knowing how to do things. But in the highly uncertain world we are living in, the really valuable skills are deciding what needs to be done and then making sure that it happens. Who does that better, humans or AI?
The Habits of Human Excellence
The ancient Greeks and Romans identified a set of habits of human excellence they called the cardinal virtues. These have been honored in almost every major civilization and religion as representing peak performance in human thought, action, and feeling, and give us a unique human advantage, as Dr. Jay Richards has argued.
The cardinal virtues of practical wisdom and justice are the habits for deciding, fairly, what needs to be done. Practical wisdom is the habit of making wise decisions; it involves setting goals, gathering information, and reasoning. Justice is the habit of treating others fairly and with respect, ensuring that the needs of all are addressed.
How does AI measure up in these two areas? AI can gather and process vast amounts of information. Some AI models can even set their own goals, derived from a hierarchical set of 'value functions' programmed into them. AI also conveys respect, and particularly empathy, very well. Blind evaluations tend to find the bedside manner of AI to be more empathetic than that of human doctors. Many people are comforted by talking to AI, and some have even married their chatbots. In tests of moral reasoning, people tend to prefer AI-generated conclusions to those of humans.
Human beings nevertheless retain a decisive advantage in the exercise of both practical wisdom and justice, because our goal setting and sense of fairness come from within—we are complete. We have free will and an innate sense of fairness, evident even in toddlers, while AI is incomplete: its value function has to be programmed into it, by us. It is unable to be self-reflective, as we are, examining and updating our own values.
The other two cardinal virtues (there are four in all) are courage and self-discipline. These are the habits of excellence for dealing with our feelings, particularly our fears and desires. Courage is the habit of moving forward despite fear, and self-discipline is the habit of following our desires only when it makes sense to do so. They are the virtues for making sure that things get done.
Having no feelings may seem like an advantage for AI, in getting things done. Without any fear, robots can enter dangerous situations that would deter humans. Without desires of their own, AI agents should be completely focused on their assigned tasks. And yet, human emotion is a vitally important source of our success as a species. Emotion drives motivation. It is our desires that keep us moving towards better ways of living, while our fears move us away from worse ones.
AI or Unvirtuous Humans?
One might observe that many people do not appear to exhibit free will, that their sense of 'fairness' is heavily biased in their own favor, and that their emotions, far from driving them on to greater things, are dragging them down. People seem to respond only to external stimuli, and can be unrelentingly selfish. Fear paralyzes them, and desires lead them to all sorts of abuse, degradation, and violence. Where's the superiority?
'Whether humans can be durably superior to AI depends on which humans we mean—those living from their best selves or those mired in their worst.'Here lies the key: whether humans can be durably superior to AI depends on which humans we mean—those living from their best selves or those mired in their worst. Our distinctive human strengths emerge only when we cultivate the best in ourselves: the virtues.
From a virtue perspective, those who are not currently their best selves are not doomed to that condition. They just haven't developed their virtues yet. The virtues are analogous to muscles, which need to be exercised regularly in order to grow. Daily practice of the habits of wisdom, justice, courage and self-discipline are what it takes to build each virtue, and we need them all if we are to be excellent at deciding what needs to be done, and making sure it gets done.
Educational institutions, and companies, should foster these virtues. This is traditionally done through a liberal arts education, where students can study the various virtue traditions throughout history, learn from virtuous role models and mentors, and are expected to practice the virtues. Companies likewise can offer education in the virtues, mentoring, and opportunities and expectations for their practice.
We have been upgrading our AI models at a breakneck pace. Instead of worrying about AI overtaking us, it is time to give ourselves an upgrade, by cultivating the virtues to become our best selves.

Need to get ‘better' at AI? The world's top universities are gifting you their best classes

If the onset of AI is a worry for you, then ask yourself a simple question: 'Do I actually know how it works?' If the answer is 'no', 'sort of' or 'I can ask ChatGPT how to convert recipes' then you could probably do with some help. Well, we've got great news: some of the world's top universities are offering you their best courseware about artificial intelligence for free. Think about that. The best thinking of elite universities for free, meaning you'll understand the advent of Gemini or Perplexity in no time. Recommended Videos Whether you want to just get grounded in artificial intelligence, apply it to your business or school, or start coding in Python there is a class for you. (And, yes, I asked OpenAI's GPT-5 to help me compile this list.) Quick picks by level Just starting out: MIT AI 101, then Harvard CS50 AI. Comfortable with Python + basic ML math: CMU 10-601 or Berkeley CS189. Targeting LLMs/NLP in depth: Stanford CS224N. MIT — AI 101 (OCW) — True Beginner Short, workshop-style starter that demystifies key terms and includes an interactive exercise. Ideal if you're starting from zero before jumping into CS50 AI. It's a few years old but helps explain the fundamentals. Format: brief videos, slides, hands-on demo. Still one of the most accessible on-ramps to 'classical' AI plus modern ML. It's self-paced, free to audit, and actively available through December 31, 2025. This remains a community favorite in 2025: 'Best of all time' lists and 5-star user ratings on Class Central; Reddit threads praise the clarity but note you should be ready for non-trivial Python projects. Level-wise, you'll want basic Python; the math is explained gently. Format: polished video lectures, problem sets/projects, transcripts, and auto-grading via edX. Free, English-language intros spanning AI in Python and domainspecific applications; designed to require only basic digital literacy. Good for absolute beginners wanting structured, practical modules. Format: videos, exercises; optional low-cost certificate. Carnegie Mellon — Introduction to Machine Learning (10-301/10-601), Spring 2025 — Intermediate CMU's 2025 offering hosts a detailed public syllabus; while graded resources sit behind campus tools, you can follow lecture topics and posted notes/links. Great if you want a classic ML theory+practice path (supervised/unsupervised, evaluation, etc.). Format: public schedule/notes; some lecture material varies in openness by week. Berkeley's flagship ML course publishes complete lecture notes and typically shares lecture videos each term (availability can fluctuate). It's math-forward and an excellent bridge to deep learning. Format: lecture notes, (often) public videos, assignments/solutions for past terms. Stanford keeps publishing the course site with updated slides/notes; the 2024–25 ('win2425') run indicates current materials. Public lecture videos are typically the 2023 playlist; slides/assignments get refreshed annually. It assumes solid Python, ML, and some deep-learning background. Reviews from learners consistently call it rigorous but rewarding, especially for those targeting LLMs. It is routinely recommended for serious NLP/LLM study—rigorous assignments, strong research grounding; discussions highlight the workload but high payoff. Format: slides, assignments, prior-year videos. If you're still unsure about whether you can commit the time to the world of AI, you can always start a little bit simpler. OpenAI has a 101 guide to ChatGPT, or you can quickly run through Perplexity's beginner's guide. Whatever you do, if you've got a modicum of interest (or worry) about the world of AI, then don't delay on learning more – the quicker you understand the way this new technology works, the sooner you'll start feeling part of the upcoming changes, rather than being beholden by them.

I Tried ChatGPT-5 To Make Money Online. This Is What Happened

If you're launching or growing a business online in 2025, AI tools like ChatGPT are your ultimate unfair advantage. They help you remain competitive in your industry, and enable you as a freelance professional to deliver uncompromising quality and speed of project execution. So far, the data shows: So the question is, What's so exciting and different about ChatGPT-5, OpenAI's latest model? And how can you use it, like other freelancers are doing, to build your business and make money online outside of your 9-5? What's New With ChatGPT-5? Quick facts: ChatGPT-5 is OpenAI's latest model, released Thursday (August 7), and is dubbed its 'flagship model' which claims to be its best to date, being smarter, more efficient, more widely useful on various benchmarks compared to earlier models, according to OpenAI's website. It's been designed to have less hallucinations (however still keep on the lookout as AI does have its moments) and was developed to be more efficient, accurate, detailed, and have greater depth in areas such as: For now, much to the chagrin of some users who've expressed their disappointment on social media platforms, access to previous versions of ChatGPT has been removed (at the time of writing). How Can You Start Making Money With ChatGPT-5? To start making money online using ChatGPT's newest advanced model, you need to think about the features that are most relevant to your work, that can help in giving you an edge above your competitors. Here are some examples of how you might be able to use ChatGPT-5's newest features to cut short your work and make more money: That being said, ChatGPT-5 is not without its drawbacks, even in its first 72 hours. It has received mixed reviews from users, with backlash from many stating that this model is nowhere near as good as ChatGPT 4.0. How Does ChatGPT-5 Work? For my part, I wanted to test it for myself, so I decided to act as a freelance designer and posed ChatGPT this prompt: 'Create a ready-to-sell Instagram carousel design for a personal trainer client in the health and fitness industry, eliminating the need for manual design work. I have uploaded a screenshot of a sample post the client says they like and admire. They'd like the aesthetic of their branding on Instagram to be similar to this. The carousel will have quick facts about how to burn an extra 300 calories a day.' (The photo I used in the prompt was a screenshot of a Canva template I had found.) This is what happened: Jeff Hunter, an admin on Artificial Intelligence, a large Facebook community of 3.6 million AI enthusiasts, posted: "First thoughts on ChatGPT 5?" to which he was met with an overwhelming response of underwhelmed ChatGPT users expressing their disappointment. Yahoo News also reported that there was mixed feedback at Sam Altman's live Reddit session, with users noting that ChatGPT-5 is notably worse at writing assignments compared to version four. I then gave ChatGPT this prompt: 'Give me design suggestions based on this style: what are the fonts used and what are the HEX color codes? Also give me a ready-to-use caption and hashtags using the client's brand voice: energetic, sharp and to the point, no messing around tone, witty, motivating.' The answer came almost immediately, most of which was extremely helpful and detailed if I was a real freelance designer. The hiccup came when it offered a promise it couldn't fulfil: When I said yes, this prompt took me on endless yo-yo before it finally came to the conclusion that it couldn't access Canva or create a Canva link. I then asked it to create the full set of carousels instead. The finished product? One lone image, almost identical to the cover image that we originally started with (see below): Needless to say, I was disappointed as it seemed ChatGPT had gone backwards in its capabilities and understanding of my prompts. Nonetheless, here's what I learned about using ChatGPT-5 to make money online as a freelancer: Finally, consider experimenting with other Gen AI tools like Claude and Copilot, to see which serves your needs best as you monetize your skills online. Some have clearly distinct advantages over others for specific tasks, like code reviews or debugging. In an AI-driven world, remember, one of your greatest advantages is being able to out-innovate your competition. So, automate where you can, design your own custom prompts and AI workflows, and watch your skills make money for you. The AI Revolution: What It Means For The Future Of Work

This article can actually be considered a 'Part Two' or follow-up to my recent article sharing some favorite takeaways from the Customer Contact Week (CCW) conference in Las Vegas. One of the keynote speakers was AI futurist Zack Kass (formerly with OpenAI), who delivered a presentation that should make every business leader pause and think more about where we're headed. At the end of the presentation, I looked at my colleague sitting next to me and said, 'Mic drop! That may be the most compelling, scary, yet still optimistic presentation on AI I've ever heard.' Kass said, 'We are building machines that possess human intellectual equivalence and superiority.' In other words, almost anything a human can do, a machine can do better, and it's getting less expensive to do so by the day. I've been tracking the intersection of AI and customer experience (CX) for years. I found Kass's insights particularly relevant as they relate to creating amazing customer experiences. The question isn't whether AI will transform how we service customers. It already is. The question to consider is how quickly we can adapt to the changes that are already here. In other words, the future is now! With that in mind, I'm going to share with you a summary of the Zack Kass keynote. Three Phases of AI Kass outlined three critical phases of the AI revolution that every CX and business leader should understand: The Dark Side of AI While AI is exciting, Kass said there are serious concerns that every business needs to consider: The Bright Side of AI There are incredible opportunities made possible by AI, and although some of the comments Kass made earlier in the speech were alarming, the benefits of AI not only balance out its dark and bright sides, but also tip the scales in favor of the bright side. Final Words There are numerous articles that highlight the greatest inventions and innovations of all time. Just do a Google search. Or better yet, just ask ChatGPT. ('But seriously, folks …') AI will surely become recognized as one of the innovations that significantly change the world we live in. Companies (and people) who embrace AI are more likely to succeed, and Kass shares his advice to do so: 'Optimize for human qualities. What you know is not as interesting as how you make people feel.' That's the experience that will make your customers say, 'I'll be back!'
